Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Why not both?

The goal is to get to the point where it’s no bigger deal than if it were a straight or white person.

I appreciate the respectful discussion.
I think the problem is that some are now feeling what many others have felt for generations and are fighting to try to keep the status quo, unfortunately progress marches on. No longer should certain groups be kept to jokes and side characters within movies, all should get their time in the light.

See @Casper Gutman we ended up talking about this topic anyways, even if it should be a separate conversation. :)

Actually, I’m glad to read this is a thing. We just thought one of our servers was weird recently because every time she came to the table, she called us friend. I think it was at Kona Café.
I don't see anything wrong with being called "friend" as I mentioned, to me its even more neutral and inclusive to do so. Which is probably why Canadians have been doing it for a long time. ;)

So even if it happens I didn't think much of it as I certainly don't remember it enough for it to stand out. I'm sure every CM is different so maybe it comes down to their comfortability in gauging a guests own comfort in what pleasantry they would like.

Not sure how true this might be, since it’s only a rumor for now, but…

Anyway, we watched Falcon & Winter Soldier between yesterday and today. I think it set things up nicely with Falcon’s struggle to be Captain America. They directly addressed the black issue, with him saying, “People will hate me for (wearing) this.”

But he earned it. Curious to see how the film fills in the blanks for those who didn’t watch the series.

Since my husband is off tonight, we’re about to go check it out. Expectations are realistic, as with any superhero movie. Fun date night out either way for us.

So much for respectful discussion. Lol

Gotta admit it’s been a blast cheering for Tkachuk on Team USA rather than despising him as a thorn in the Knights side.
When I did follow hockey I was a Sharks fan, so I know the pain of having to root for players you despise during the season during Worlds. Next year is going to be interesting with hockey back in the Olympics.

Welcome to being a Disney Fan Site poster.... The more you post the more you stay engaged the more you want to respond. Its a cycle that never quits, because you get to know your fellow posters and its like a community or a dysfunctional family.
It can get heated at times but the vast majority of the time it’s just people talking, something that’s sorely missing in America today. It’s nice to have a place online we can agree, disagree, argue, etc and not have it devolve (99% of the time) into name calling and animosity just because we hold different opinions.

I love that I can be on the opposite side of argument with someone on one topic here and go into the next thread and we’re arguing the same side of the next argument.

I wish more people took the time to dialog with people they disagree with, it’s a good way of finding out we are often more alike with the other “team” than we’re different.

Like I said we’re a dysfunctional family here. :)

Breathe. :)

I made up that plotline and pulled that example out of thin air, as I vaguely remember it being discussed in a thread here or on the Disneyland side.

The fact that you have to dig up some article to prove that somewhere on planet Earth there is a Black lady who coaches hockey proves the point.

If you have to go to Google to see if something actually exists, it's not going to read as organic to the audience.
You can’t have it both ways. On the one hand, you’re praising shows of past decades for including gay characters without fuss or fanfare “as normal and routine parts of society”. But when Inside Out 2 does the same with a Black character, you decry it as pandering and inorganic.

I’ve said it before, but the decks are always impossibly stacked in these discussions. Indeed, it’s often not a real discussion at all—just agenda-driven projection and/or trolling.

I don't know about that, as they were certainly unapologetically liberal shows created by a liberal team. But I don't think they crossed the line into "woke"
You sound just as confused as I am where that line is…As being woke use to be a positive…. But because someone was offended by black mermaids and a lesbian astronaut the term was demonize

This isn't a race or a competition, it's a conversation. A discussion, if you will. :)

If you think it's organic for a kids hockey coach to be a Black Lesbian, then go for it and live your own adventure. But most folks would find that character casting to be jarring and incongruous to natural storytelling.

If I may add in my two cents in a non confrontational manner. I think what you are missing here is not that it’s always “I know it when I see it”. But that the woke movement also actively looks for it when it really isn’t there. Your sticking point on Inside Out 2 I think is one of the latter.

The term you are maybe searching for is token representation. But it’s not really ‘woke’ by any sense of the definition. Either the old or the new.

The other time I think you were looking for it when it wasn’t really there was related to Ms Marvel. Which is neither really a woke character nor token in her representation. Being a minority inherently doesn’t make it either, it’s all how it’s made and framed.

Meanwhile Barbie was inarguably the most classically woke film of 2023. But you give it a pass because you actually watched it and just didn’t pre-judge it. I don’t agree with the woke movement, obviously. But even if I did I don’t like how it encourages pre-judgement. You actually have to see it to know it. Which I think swings back to the original point that a few things wouldn’t pass the muster that you love from decades ago, because people would be way too quick to judge. I cannot possibly see how Modern family would play today. Schitts creek would still Trojan horse its way in because it’s a Canadian production. Mulan and Mrs. Doubtfire would be virtually unreleasable in our current environment as first exposure concepts.

Not your interest, but the children’s X-men cartoon from the 90’s is more woke than anything the MCU has farted out. Including probably Cap 4 (segue).
