Have I mentioned how much I ***hated*** that book?
I saw the show first, got the book, and it was awful. Forced myself to finish it, but was annoyed for wasting my time on it.
Never seen this before. Critics review aren’t out quite yet (shortly), but audience ratings already 99%:

Embargo lifts today, around now I think, for critics.
45 just went up, sitting at 96% fresh score.
On thing is for certain, it should be better than Cats.
How dare you even bring that energy in here, with that cursed film!

Just saying that modern musical movies don't do well. Cats, The Greatest Showman, Westside Story all failed. I guess Wicked is different.
Greatest Showman was succesful I thought? Definitely made a profit against its budget.
The big issue is they don't know how to direct a musical these days for film. But I am seeing a lot of people saying Jon Chu gets it, and this is up there with Chicago, Mamma Mia, etc.

Hopefully he's learned from making In the Heights. I was not a fan of the direction in that screen adaptation -- so many of the dance sequences in that one had a ton of MTV cutting and closeups instead of just letting the choreography do the work.
Exactly.
But yes, many other recent attempts have failed. But Wicked is a beast of property. It had far wider audience appeal than Cats, or West Side Story, and it only fails if it’s bad, and so far it sounds like it’s good. Audiences will show up.

The real question is are families going to see it or Moana? With most families only seeing a max of one movie a month, its going to be a choice.
Though I have seen online some rumblings about a "Barbenheimer" type thing potentially happen with Moana and Wicked. What do we call that, "Micked", "Moicked", "Wioana"?
