Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Are you suggesting Disney doesn’t do shameless product placements in their films? How did such a practice work at keeping Haunted Mansion’s budget “reasonable”?

Yikes.

You hate to think how much more money over its already bloated $160 Million budget Disney would have spent without all those product placements. 🤔

I didn’t pick that up either, but circuitously it’s vaguely reminiscent of Shrek’s Welcome to Duloc, which was a Disneyland mockery. I wonder if that’s how @Wendy Pleakley seemed to get that trigger.

I think that’s sheer happenstance rather than purposeful though.

The movie was full of references to Disney history so I don't think it's a coincidence that the song presented Rosa as a Disney-esque place.

More synergy than product placement though as I said.

Blade Runner is probably the best example of product placement done well.

Advertising is a feature of a cityscape so it's not egregious.

It also feels organic because a future set movie might want to speculate what advertising looks like in the future. Apparently the future is Atari.

Box Office is out for yesterday, which allows us to see the full 3 day holiday weekend total for the two new movies that aren't doing that well; Garfield and Furiosa. Plus the latest on Apes 9, of course.

Also, the LA Times has an interesting story about the rather sad state of affairs in the Hollywood industry in SoCal. Tighter budgets seem to be kicking in and the jobs and gigs are drying up even after the strikes, according to the article.

The one positive to Garfield snd Furiosa not succeeding at the box office… is it could be leading to more variety at the theaters… I saw some reports in the trades that there is 3 new releases this weekend, but they weren’t sure how wide as they would all be competing for screens with the big releases…the local theater I go to most appears to not have any movies in more than 1 theater…. They have all the bigger films…plus they do have all 3 new releases, films such as Babes, I saw The TV Glow, and a couple of re-releases

IMO more variety will only help the exhibition space… there have been weeks when a big release will get 4 or 5 screens… which I think could cause some to turn away not caring for the blockbuster of that week…a big release really only needs 2 max…perhaps one in the big ultra screen and 1 in a regular theater who don’t want to pay those prices… the bigger movies are on so many screens typically here… If I go see 1 even on the opening weekend… they don’t come close to selling out, but when I see a smaller movie…the theater can be packed( of course it is in the smaller theater too)variety will only open the theater to more types of filmgoers

Yeah, I don't know. Every time I think the theaters are about to get a more varied menu of movies in, stuff misses us. Over the last few months we've gotten trailers for things like Shayda, The Beast, Poolman, and Stress Positions, and none of them actually turned up at our chain theaters. I think only half of them even made it to the art theater here.

But yeah, agreed that people (at least in my market) have been going to a lot of the small movie showings I've been to recently. We saw I Saw the TV Glow twice (kind of, the first one was interrupted by a fire alarm right at the start of act 3) and both showings had 15-20 people in it, and we just finally saw Civil War over the weekend and there was a similar amount of people in that as well.

In Disney-specific news, Young Woman and the Sea comes out this weekend. I haven't seen it reported yet, but I would guess it's getting less than 1000 screens based on what I see in my market.

I hadn't noticed that listed on the calendar of releases, but I went back and looked and... sure enough. It's apparently a Walt Disney Studios film and it is in "limited" release starting Friday the 31st. Who knew?

I couldn't find any information on what its production budget is. There's very little info about it in general. Odd.

The overseas box office for Apes 9 has now been updated to include this past weekend from all countries. Here's where Apes 9 stands as it heads towards it's 4th weekend in theaters globally...

Apes 9: Production $160, Marketing $80, 60% Domestic B.O. $78, 40% Overseas B.O. $68 = $94 Million Loss so far

Ape... well, you know.jpg

It was discussed in this thread before as being on the release schedule for Disney. Its a biopic about a US Olympic Swimmer who was the first female to swim the English Channel, it was originally a D+ Exclusive that they decided to move to a theatrical release due to last years strikes. Its a Jerry Bruckheimer production so I expect its pretty good.

As of now it has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes
