Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

I don't know. People really seem to be looking forward to Dune Part Two (Part One had an IMAX reissue this past weekend that apparently did okay, far better than Turning Red's anyway) and even Twisters is rustling up some interest, but the other titles you listed seem much chancier prospects. Ghostbusters - Frozen Kingdom is the sort of nostalgia ploy that largely bombed last year, fatigue with the MCU might make this a bad time to do a self-parody with Deadpool and Wolverine, Inside Out 2 has such a high bar to clear creatively and they don't seem to have the staff to make that happen (plus, it'll be streaming on Disney+ soon enough!), and the Wicked teaser didn't fire people up (looking like the kind of all-CGI background bore audiences seem to be turning against). And what are the moderate hits supposed to be?

You think Twisters is a better bet than Deadpool and Inside Out 2? …OK…

I don't think Twisters will perform much better than Deadpool 3, but also, no one would have ever dreamed a Raunchy rated R romantic comedy, "Anyone but you" would have domestically outperformed a Disney Princess Christmas time released musical or Wonka performing far better than an Indiana Jones.

To the earlier post saying Ghostbusters Afterlife is notalgia play. Afterlife was a big theater hit considering when it came out and the budget it had. Afterlife had a lot of love from a lot of people who saw it either in theaters or its great home video response. Frozen Empire has me predicting it will do similar to Afterlife towards the 200 million domestic range total if luck be with it.

This is the country that made Top Gun: Death Dream the 2nd biggest post-pandemic movie. It wouldn't shock me to see another sequel to a massive hit from days of yore that no one really asked for do big business.
Top Gun remains a tremendously culturally relevant film - it has characters, lines, music, etc. that are all still part of the shared pop culture consciousness. More importantly, the sequel brought back the star of the original, Tom Cruise, arguably the last real movie star.

Twisters is a sequel to an almost entirely forgotten non-classic that features none of the original cast (and no particularly significant current stars). It’s a much worse bet then, say, the Indepence Day sequel. If Disney were making it, the loud posters here would be mocking it relentlessly.

Yup. I'm not saying it will, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if twisters beat Deadpool and inside out. I don't think it will beat Deadpool, but inside out is a question mark for me. A lot of crazy things have happened, so nothing should be a surprise at this point.

<summons righteous indignation>

How dare you, sir? I'll have you know that Twister is the one and only movie I ever skipped school to see [yeah, yeah, so it was just the afternoon after a morning AP exam, but it was still skipping] and we are constantly saying "we've got cows" anytime we bike past a pasture on RAGBRAI.

Note: Even though all of the above is factually true, I am not particularly looking forward to seeing Twisters, nor do I hold much love in my heart for the original.

To be fair, Wish did preform theatrically in line with Encanto, Strange World and Raya. Encanto hit after the fact.

Deadpool is the biggest trailer of all time, on the other hand. It’ll get held back from its R rating, but I really think this one is the surest hit of 2024 at this point. It could be the R rated ‘Barbie’, with the eternal caveat that it needs to be good.

I’m fairly optimistic about Inside Out 2 and Moana (theatrically). I’m totally dubious about the latter being a proper theatrical narrative, I don’t know how you shrink a show back to the big screen.

Mufasa could be the big financial flop this year, I assume it’s expensive.

By the way, the Deadpool 3 trailer is the most watched of all time.

I have no doubt it will be big. But it is worth noting the “most viewed trailer ever” numbers being trumpeted lumped together the YouTube views and the estimated Super Bowl viewership. So, not really a 1:1 comparison when it comes to previous YT trailer numbers.

Wish was allowed a much longer theatrical window than those three films, with no streaming date announced beforehand (or surcharge for home viewing in Raya's case) and had an exponentially bigger marketing and especially merchandising campaign -- I don't think Disney merchandised any movie, not even Rise of Skywalker or the MCU, this hard since Frozen II. Covid was still considered an issue when Raya and Encanto were released, and Strange World might as well have not existed given how poorly Disney marketed it. Wish had Disney's full support behind it and was supposed to be everything Disney Adults had been clamoring for online the past few years (a "real" villain! fairy tale setting! etc.), and it just ate dirt. I honestly think it's their biggest embarrassment since The Black Cauldron, since WDAS has never really had a flop that wasn't seen as outside the company's "comfort zone" (like a Fantasia, Black Cauldron, or pulp adventure is) before.

Deadpool is Marvel’s Joker so, yeah, it’s as much of a sure thing as there is for TWDC. My larger point was Disney has put out press releases about nearly every tentpole’s trailer views which don’t always correspond to box office success. It’s rote marketing at this point.

100 percent I agree with you. My point was that Wish wasn’t really achieving anything by comparison. The most watched trailer since Frozen 2 just meant the trailer was more watched than 3 other films. It was a very misleading statistic.

Albeit if the actual superbowl viewership is being mixed in this one also carries an asterisks.
