Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

For sure. This is tenth movie(11 in Universe) in an oversaturated series and third movie after the lead died. Like Marvel, it had to hit a less ROI margin eventually. Globally though, while of course not as much of a cut, more than justifies it as a good business move. Less margin is not the same as losing 100 million dollars.
The production budget on Fast X was reportedly $340 million(!!!), so at only a bit over $700 million it didn't get into the black going by the traditional 3x budget standard. (Same problems for films like Elemental, The Little Mermaid remake, and Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning. People did see them but not enough against those crazy budgets.)

Weekend box office estimates are out now, with exact revision to be released tomorrow. Wonka has already grossed more globally in its first weekend than Wish has a full month after its release.

Wonka Production Budget $125 Million, Global Box Office = $156 Million
Wish Production Budget $200 Million, Global Box Office = $126 Million
Technically it's Wonka's second weekend - a lot of international territories like the U.K. got it a week before North America did. But that says a lot about how well it's doing overseas; the U.S. weekend was better than many forecast by a few million, and it's still less than a third of the total take so far! (Of course, since it did open internationally first that meant the good reviews got ahead of the game too, whereas lifting the embargo on Wish the Friday before release proved not so wise.)

WB seems committed to making sure this movie legs out its run (basically that it becomes their Greatest Showman). It's kind of become convention for a movie that opens (and reviews) well in the middle of December to stick around a while, even against the crush of Christmas week/end releases. Plenty of schools are getting out this week. They may not see much out of Aquaman 2 but there may be a rising tide to float other boats...

The standard is not accurate for all. So let's give it a dissapointment. It happens. It was the 11nth movie in a Universe that has gone on since the early 2000s and no longer has the lead. It is oversaturated. It was due for a meh to a low eventually. If you want to give it a bomb, that studio still came out just fine with their diverse release slate and audience reception.

Yeah, def had too big of a budget for how tired of a franchise and lazy it got. Let's be real, Uni that was Uni's only loss of that magnitude this year. Even with that Ruby Gillman, Renfield and The Strays, Uni had one of their best years. There are still mehs and losses in the industry. Disney was just consistent with this issue.

Saw it after my second Godzilla showing.

I can't believe how fun it was. Nice surprise and it leaned I to the connection in the right places while holding it's own.

The music and lyrics really show how bad Wish's is.
The Japanese version for the songs in Wish is apparently much better according to Japanese Disney Fans. This might be due to better translations and voice acting performances. "This Wish" has been playing everywhere in Japan according to Japanese users online.

That's good for that market. The teams over translations probably took time to fix the uglier lines that many did not find they resonated.
it seems Wonka all around is the better received musical there as well for the budget. It fits the market audience.

My Japanese is rough(have not studied for a year and a half) but I will give it a listen

Forgot to mention Wish has been getting a lot of promotion in Japan (notably from Idol singers). Asha is even voiced by a popular J-Pop singer.

So then Fast X Flopped when compared to the other Fast and Furious movies

I guess? I'm not familiar with those movies at all, except for a laughably bad thing on the Universal Studios Tram Tour five years ago where some holographic scantily clad go-go girls danced and pranced around us in a darkened tunnel before cars raced by. It was so bad it was fabulous, and I still remember it. 🤣

Going to Google, Fast X was the eleventh (11!) movie in that 22 year old franchise. The mind boggles at that, but...

The issue here is that there isn't a whole lot of new movies coming out between now and February. Its part of the reason why Disney is releasing some of the pandemic movies to theaters in January.
True, but Wish just isn't well-liked enough to just be kept around when awards-season contenders will start seeing wider runs and (again) Migration and Wonka are a lot fresher. Indeed if Disney was more confident about Wish legging it out they wouldn't try putting some old Pixar movies back on the market.

There is still enough screens available to have Wish and all the other stuff you mentioned too. If there were new releases coming out that needed the screens I may have agreed with you. But there is nothing major coming out until March once Migration and Aquaman 2 releases.

Disney is more likely to just let it ride out and bring in whatever it can until sometime in Jan/Feb.

So assuming Migration is a big hit, does Illumiation then take the crown for undisputed King of animation?

I think in order to get that crown you should need to both make money and actually make things that utilize animation as the beautiful artform it can be.

So right now we're just stuck in a sad, leaderless hellscape of ugly and mediocre with the big players. With an occasional glimmer, at least.

One thing Disney is going to do now for sure is replace Jonathan Majors.

I hope he used all his park comp passes before the trial started.

They appear to have already started planning for that before the trial even started, its why the reports of them looking to go with Doctor Doom as the big bad going forward started to surface a couple months ago.

Yes, they definitely were planning an escape route from him but this cements that the Kang experiment is over.
I'm of the opinion that the writing was already on the wall long before this. The only question was were they going to try to go the "variant" route and have another actor play Kang or just completely switch to Doom. And that question still remains to be seen on what they ultimately decide, but my opinion is they just accelerate to Doom before F4 in 2025.

It might be part of the reasons for some of the reshoots in Capt America.
