New estimate for Demon Hunters sing-along is $18 million

Impressive for a movies that's been on Netflix for months and is only playing for 2 days
It is not really that surprising to me…. K-pop has quie a large fan base… and one look at the Spotify charts will tell how popular the soundtrack is…. Plus Minecraft tells us kids love their theater interactions these days…I would guess the sing along aspect is what will bring people to the theater

Speciality anime box office is doing better than Disney’s 100th heavily marketed film (Demonslayer). A K-Pop Animated film is the next Frozen. The biggest film of the year in the box office is out of China.

It’s pretty fascinating to watch the cultural influential climb broader Asian media is having. It had a moment in the 90’s when the video game industry had been domestically dissipated from the 80’s crash. Now again Microsoft has rapidly fallen to third place in the sphere.

Back to our conversation earlier, Sony feels the most on its own path both on the back of their video game arm and also being the primarily anime home in Crunchyroll. They are almost ones who should be in the theme park sphere over Universal. They have a lot of Gen Z media influence.

Iger has admitted his clear blind spot for this and probably speaks to that slow liability there. Though to his credit he ceded the blind spot.

Here’s how Fantastic 4 has slipped week on week had it maintained a more standard tentpole 3X multiple.

1) 218 - 654
2) 368.7 - 670
3) 434.2 - 565.2
4) 468.7 - 537.7

It’ll still do 500 I’d surmise, but it’s slowing way down.

5) 490.1 - 532.9

Though the 3X multiplier is not the course it has been on with the constant deceleration - it had a good week and seems to actually be heading more toward 520 then the 500 I was guessing at last week.

My own commentary is a positively reviewed movie with a great opening weekend, disappointing international support and a generally bad run. Sometimes the way you finish defines things more than you start. But I think this one has hit that anemic watermark of getting a team up sequel (post Avengers). There’s enough positive there for the studio to work with.

Yep, we’re basically within that +/- $10M range of when it flips from loss into profitability, as once international is calculated for the weekend it should be at $490M. And yes I think there is certainly a strong argument to be made for a sequel, though I’m sure some around here will jump up and down and claim otherwise.

Weekend box office first pass is in, for the last weekend before Labor Day!

We seem to be coasting towards September on fumes at this point. Nothing was really a huge blockbuster this summer, with the lone exception of Lilo & Stitch, made even more profitable with its farmed out production to Ridgeback Ranch for only $100 Million.

But on the Burbank lot itself where things cost a lot more, it seems they're just hoping to maybe, kind of, sort of, break even on their two movies (Fantastic Four, Freakier Friday) that didn't outright bomb (Elio). I'm afraid the summer of '25 isn't going to be that memorable when we look back on it in the future!

But at least, did everyone get a good tan? Have a summer fling (or two)? Read a good trashy beach novel? Get your fill of lobster rolls and S'mores? (My Personal Score: Yes, Too Old, Sort Of, Yes.)

I saw the 4k restore of Shin Godzilla. It's directed by the man that directed Godzilla Minus One. Shin Godzilla is a remake of the original but told from the point of view of the government and their failings during a national crisis. Good movie.

I saw Freaker Friday. It was just okay since it was nothing more than a retelling of the original. I thought the jokes fell flat but Lohan and Curtis were fun to watch.

Freakier Friday moved into profitability this weekend, passing its $105M breakeven point on a $42M budget (cheaper than Stitch!, so Burbank does know how to do a movie for inexpensive), currently sitting at $113M WW.

Fantastic Four should move into profitability this next weekend, by passing its $500M breakeven point on a $200M budget, currently sitting at $490M WW.

So whether memorable or not, Burbank is probably doing just fine this summer.

I got tickets to demon hunter in September,
My kids love that show.
I’m sure we will be the only family in the theater.
Where is it playing in September? Because Netflix was only putting it in theaters on August 23rd and 24th, it was a limited time special engagement, with no future showings.

Are you sure you're talking about KPop Demon Hunters and not some other movie like Demon Slayer?

My daughter had me buy tickets through crunchy roll for Demon slayer.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (Dubbed)
