Welcome to universal is crap boards. i think steve you should up a whole thread on how universal rip of disney as it seems to be the only thing people can talk about. Disney is a rip of in itself, ive recently seen universal 360 and there were a few bugs but other than that a brillant show. espically the jurassic and terminator bits. but if anyone else does want to bash universal please do a thread search as there a thousands of theards already set up by narrow minded people.

Lets`s remember where the idea for Disney-MGM Studios Orlando came from. Clue : It wasn`t Disney. Nor MGM.

360 seems to have fallen into the same trap as Fantasmic! - too much reliance on projected images.

People like to jump into conclusion before they actually see it. Especially when they are so denfensive and having endless hostility towards anything related to it. The resluts are they lost sence of humor or the tolerance over other things. That's why they are called "fans".
I know I'm a little late for this as sooo many people wrote back yesterday and today, but geez, calm down abian! First of all, I actually have been to Universal many times and like it very much, especially because I have taken the VIP tours and have gone to parties there when it was closed only to the party, and it gave a different light to the park without other people there. I actually thought that the Shrek wrap around on the commercial for this new light show was cute, as it is one of my favorite movies as well, perhaps I should have explained this earlier. But get off a Disney site if all you are going to do is bash us for our opinions as to how a "360 globe" with movie projections seems PRETTY SIMILAR to the Disney illuminations show. I mean it has music, fireworks, and images on a globe. Yes, they maybe different in the way they are projected, however this show first occured in disney, and for a park that likes to make fun of Disney on their commercials, they sure do admire the shows and attractions they have in their park...:lookaroun maybe even copy them a little??
so yeah I'm defensive, maybe hostile at times, but it's all for the love of disney, and don't you ever say I lost my sense of humor! you hear me! I'm pretty funny...I am!

Yawn.........let's see.......a lagoon with a big globe in the middle with pictures on it, and fireworks, and interaction from the buildings around the lagoon.......hasn't this been done since like the 80s at Epcot? Find a new idea, Universal........:snore:

sure it's exactly like Illuminations except it's really nothing like illuminations.

Some of you get offended way too easily. I've got an idea why don't you view both shows and see how different they really are before you go getting all ticked off. But of course, that wouldn't be the wdwmagic way.

If they had done a fireworks show you'd have just accused them of copying wishes, if it was a stage show with movie projections you'd have accused them of copying fantasmic, so I'm not surprised you're accusing them of copying illuminations.

C'mon....competition is good for everyone. I know absolutely that some of the greatest magical moments for me, at Disney, are the evening fireworks shows. I am amazed the Universal never tried before. This looks like a good effort, and if it woos visitors Disney will strike back.

A big difference is, according to Universal, they can change the show depending on the season. Holloween, Christmas, etc. Thats pretty cool. Of course the proof is in the pudding. Star Tours was initially advertised as being an attraction that could easily get an upgrade and........

Meanwhile I get to check out a new show.

We visit Universal every other year. We do Disney every year. I bet a lot of people are like that. Imagine if Universal got folks like my family to increase the frequency of our visits.........That's a lot of dough.

I have done Universal a few times, and will say the last time I went with my husband we had the best time. And I hate to say it, but if I am just comparing Universal to Disney Studios I am starting to think Universal is a bit better. There seems to be more to do there. With that said, if I only had 1 day in Orlando and had to choose between Universal and MK, I would choose MK in a heart beat as they dont compare. I also must admit that I hate the Universal commercials and they would never get me to go to their parks. I also think it is funny that they use Disney in reference so many times in the commercials that in reality I feel that they are actually promoting Disney?

I saw the add and got a little "miffed" at it. But then I thought,..."Na,..this thing, for however long it runs, will have a stigma of being the Illuminations rip-off"

Has anybody seen any "intelligence" on this thing? (home video of the show from behind enemy lines)

Somebody has video of this thing somewhere on the net. Whoever finds it, please post a link here.

If we could all could see it, then we could really judge what the heck is going on.

I don't think "rip-off's" really help them that much.

I hope they spent allot of money on it!

Just what I was thinking. From the first time riding on the "backlot tour" at MGM...(back when it actually had some substance)...it was a direct copy of the Universal original.

Disney has never been secretive about where it's inspirations have come from, be it someplace like Tivoli or the Ford Museum or the Chicago Train Fair...

Copying is the best form of flattery (as long as its not music or term papers)

First of all Abian grow up. This is a Disney site, which means its full of Disney fans, coming in here and bashing Disney and insulting people for holding it to a higher standard is childish and rude.

I like WDW as well as Universal. I have not been to Universal in a couple years, last time I went was when IoA had just opened. But my wife and I prefer WDW over Universal even though we have no kids, mainly cause there is alot more to do and WDW is more of an escape than anything else. Universal is a 1 (maybe 2) day park, nothing more. Not exactly something you can spend a week doing, after the second day you have done everything there is to do at Universal and you're bored the rest of the week .WDW has 4 parks and 2 water parks, which means there is alot more to do during the week.

To each his own I always say, some people prefer themeed attractions and shows to poorly themed rollercoasters and thrill rides. Both parks have their strong points and their target demographic, tossing insults around and downing one park or the other accomplishes nothing. I do think Universal took the low road by trying to insult the competitors in their add campaign, but if they think it will work more power to them.

Also as it has been stated before, everything that has ever been invented is a copy or imbelishment on a previous concept or product. The movies on the globe during a fireworks show was a concept originally done at EPCOT. Now they may have gotten it from some lesser known place for all we know, but thats beside the point. But the point is that Disney brought the concept to the mainstream and Universal took that same concept and imbelished on it and there is nothing wrong with that.

Okay I'm done ranting. back to your regularly scheduled thread. :zipit:

I absolutely LOVE Disney.............can't say enough great things about the mouse. That being said, my husband, myself, and my two kids truly enjoy Islands of Adventure almost as much as Disney..........I said ALMOST ;). We always end our trip with one or two days in Universal/Islands of Adventure for the thrill rides. My daughter just hit 54.25 inches tall and is SOOooo excited about riding the Hulk and Dewling (sp?) Dragons. We leave tomorrow for Disney and will end with Islands. :sohappy: :sohappy: Believe me, my loyalties lay with Disney and always will. I will never visit central Florida without a trip to see the mouse. :sohappy:

I don't think Abian was here to bash. I think he mearly wanted to defend against his right to enjoy something other than Disney. The minute you say anything that goes against the Disney grain around here you get hammered. And yet the narrow mindedness of some is ignored. Is it not childish to go "poopy on Universal" because they are copycats? If more around here were more accepting of competition and saw all the benefits there are from Universal, in many, many aspects, they would understand that it's ok to accept Universal not as the enemy but just as an entity. Without Universal, you would have nothing to compare against, therefore how would you be able to invent your "higher standards" in Disney?

Point taken:wave:!!

But he could have pointed out the positives about Universal and the like, rather than insulting Disney fans as a whole and making fun of the Disney parks. Fighting fire with fire is not always the answer, and the results of doing such are not always what you intended them to be.

But I do agree that its not entirely out of the question that Universal did borrow some ideas from Illuminations for their fireworks show, and as I said before there is nothing wrong with that. Insulting Universal for doing as such is no better than what Abian did. Some people here are very close minded about Universal, or any park other than WDW. :brick:

People like both.. and that is their right to, no matter how wrong they are...
Universal cannot hold Disney's jock... Personally, if I wanted "thrills" I would go to Great Adventure, not IOA or Universal... I go to Disney to escape the stress and pressures of the real world... Disney takes you away.. Where does Universal take you?? No where.. No magic what so ever... And please, stop trying to compare there two... There is no comparison.. Disney rocks while Universal continues to bring up the rear... Disney shouldbe flattered that others have tried and failed in mimicking Disney... Universal wasn't the first and won't be the last.. I mean, look at SeaWorld's new show for Shamu.. BELIEVE??? Come on.. That is right out of Disney's book... And the commerical for the new show is Disney-esque... I am not offended by any of Universal's boring commericals...
