All Disney has to do to get big crowds in Disney Hollywood Studios is have a "Blue Sky" area showing drawings, models and details of the upcoming "lands". This alone would drive people into the park.

It was rumored they'd be doing that in the old Animation building. Of course, that's where Star Wars Launch Bay is going later this year, but @wdwmagic indicated they could be enough room for both things there.....

I'm chaperoning a marching band trip during spring break. I'm trying to talk the director out of going to DHS but he's set on seeing Fantasmic. What will be open March-April?
you really expect to drag the whole band to a single park per day? a bunch of 15-18 year olds? that is cute. back in 96 - wow way back, they gave us passes and where chaperones would be in each park, and let us go

My HS marching band went in 2006 and we all had to go to the same park each day, but we were free to roam about on our own. We just had two times each day that we had to check-in at a designated area w/ chaperones. It worked out really well.

We went on our senior class trip to WDW with the school and it was the same deal -- set park each day, but everyone was free to do whatever they liked inside the park. We just had to check in at a set time. Also, there was a set location where a chaperon was located throughout the day that we could go to if we needed to see them.

Hi Boufa, The fact that this park is generally considered weaker than the others to start is a good point. Mulch was the ONLY band in DHS, as opposed to the other parks which I believe has at least a few musical options in each. That is a great example of cutting entertainment where there isn't much to start with. Jedi Training academy is down for a few weeks at least, which is a wildly popular attraction as well. Why? Couldn't this be moved to a temporary location in the meantime? Just too much being cut at the same time with no clear view of stuff to come soon. I was in the load/unload area for the Backlot Tour in May for the Star Wars Weekend shops. Nothing was done on an attraction that had been closed for slightly over 6 months at that point, and I am sure if I could get back there today, I would see the same amount of progress. I do agree, the attraction needed to be closed but, if you aren't doing something with the area, why bother? I love the Studios, and think when it is done it will be amazing but the way this is being done is going to cripple the park and make for a lot of very unhappy guests, both fans and newbies alike. When you are spending a good deal of money on a trip and in comparison to the other Disney parks, when a family is done with all of the attractions they want to do by noon or so, Guest Relations will be getting paid a visit and I wouldn't want that job when it happens! Marie

Just one point...they couldn't just move the Jedi Academy because they are creating a whole new show. I assume most of the people that were involved in the old show are occupied with this.

Paragraphs....please?

Hardly. For a few hundred geeks maybe.

Crowds will carry on going because tourists will know no better. It's once they get in the crowds will really begin.

It might be just me, but I'm a little underwhelmed by these announcements for the two new lands. I am very excited for them and think they will be great, but this is not the park makeover I was expecting. When rumors and announcements came out I thought we would get an entire re-imagining of all of the park and more than just slapping two lands into it so people forget that the other parts of the park with the empty buildings and tired rides in need of a refurb are there. I am probably wrong, or maybe they are just waiting to do that, but I don't know.

Then again I haven't really been watching this thread so...

You should check out the last 2 pages of recent posts on the Star Wars Land thread. It gives an idea of the most latest version of the construction timeline, as well as hints at the as yet unannounced expansion/refurbs for this park. There have been mentions of a Cars Land for phase 3, as well as a proposed but not yet completely approved phase 4 for this park. There are also hints that point to a refurb of the theater used for Beauty and the Beast, a significant refurb for Fantasmic, the Muppets area, and so on.

As other have said, it's very likely that these two lands are NOT the extent of the refurb DHS is getting.

I'm sure that is true to an extent, but, I know better and yet there are a lot of things at DHS that I enjoy. ToT, RnRC, Toy Story, Muppets, Indy, Star Tours and others... so I go every visit. The stuff that was taken out are mostly things that didn't interest me to begin with. Don't get me wrong, the closed (non-fenced) attractions are an abomination and smack in the face of how you do business and not look like your are going under. But, there are still things there that make my hopping option worthwhile.

I know we have it on good authority that there are third and fourth phases planned for the park, but I would remind people of Disney's track record regarding following through with phase 2's and beyond. In this case at least, they've basically got no choice but to build phase 2 given that it's Star Wars and they already announced it. Unless the new movie bombs (which isn't going to happen unless they have literally impossible box office expectations), you can be absolutely sure they'll feel obligated to exploit the popularity in the parks.

But for the third and fourth phases, i'm not holding my breath. They've not been announced, it's unknown (beyond rumors) what they'll even build and it also sounds like they're not greenlit yet. Construction on Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land are said to be starting fairly soon (within the next year or two), phases 3 and 4 are likely to be at least 4-5 years away from even starting.

A lot can happen by that time, including economic downturn and leadership change in Disney's corporate level (the latter of which IS going to happen). There's no telling what is approved, changed or shot down within that period.

just sticking my big toe into this thread.....but has anyone ran crowd impact estimates on the other 3 parks for the time when DHS will be under its heavy construction period? I'm assuming most people will be choosing to just flat out skip DHS on their trips, and aside from Universal, the crowd has to be dispersed between the other 3 parks.

Honestly I think that's a bad assumption because "most" people at WDW have no idea they are even doing construction at DHS until they get there. Crowds may go down but I would think very slightly for some of the informed crowd

It also appears they are going to try to offer little things here and there during construction to keep people wanting to visit.

Well, if Toy Story Land's not replacing Streets of America and Star Wars Land's not replacing Streets of America, they could do something with that. Maybe some of it could be used for the Muppets and some of it could be used for something else PIXAR. If not Cars, I vote for Monsters Inc.
