D23. Did you sign up?

Not old, just vintage.
For that much in shipping costs, they better hand deliver it to you, cook you dinner, and then take you out to the movies, Monty.

I'm a Disney fan, not a fanboy. D23 isn't worth it to me, and at $75 a pop in the current economic crisis, I feel that this was done in poor taste. They should offer an alternative plan a a lower price point, but I doubt Disney would do that.

I don't see the concept itself as elitist. 75 bucks ain't nothin', but I'd think most people who can afford to visit Disney on occasion could dig up that much if they thought the offer was worth it. I don't think they're pricing too many of their fans out of the membership itself.

Some of the merchandise being hawked under the D23 umbrella just screams "mid-life crisis status symbol," though. (I'm looking right at you, Mr. Ink-Pen-that-costs-more-than-my-first-car.)

I may have to grab those pins as well

Just to show how big a fanboy I am not :) I don't own a single stich of Disney clothing, and I don't think I ever will. Allthough that hat is kind of nice.

I really do like the "feel" of the mech line so far. It's not too "cartoony"

As for the pen. If I were in some other sort of job where I met with clients/customers and signed things, I would consider it. However right now all it would do is sit on my desk. As someone said before, there are lots of people who are "into" pens.

I have read the D23 website and what was reported in "allears newsletter"
I consider myself a Disney fan. I am a single guy with a good amount of disposable income to pay for it.

I just dont see the value in it. You get no discounts on what we as fans like to do the most "GO TO DISNEY WORLD"

It almost seems like it is a slap in the face to all the independent fan sites, magazines, and conventions. It is almost like Disney saw things like Mousefest, Celebrations Magazine, Tales from the Laughing Place and websites like this one and Mice chat and just said we will take them over. Sorry this is just my opinion on the subject.

To those who signed up for it I think thats great and I hope you enjoy it. I also hope that you guys will share your opinions on it, that might convience me and others to sign up.

While $75 isn't as bad as I was expecting, but it's still $75 that I could use for something other than the opportunity to spend more money.

I'll hold off until I can get a cast member discount... Or a sponsor...:brick:

Have to wait and see. I don't know if it is truely worth it. There needs to be more incentive or "value add" for me. Maybe if we can sit and talk to an imagineer and give them our ideas. I'd pay for that....

Well, I just paid 499.51$ for my annual pass, so... no. I'm not '23.

I probably will eventually, like sometime next year, if it's a "hit," and if everyone says it's really worth it. Plus, I'm like a previous poster, I want an expo to be held in WDW.

The membership Cast Discount doesn't exist, but you can get one on the merch.

Now I'm finally off to sleep.

seems they have shot them selves in the foot with this one.
most people on wdwmagic are obviously disney fans, and alot havent joined! what does that say.
Plus the international shipping costs have totally discriminated against overseas members, wheres shipping free in USA to the Uk its $60.(why could these not be distributed from the uk as well?)
And what good is an expo ticket to overseas members?
Why no theme park discount card? that would have been the real deal to get everyone to sign up.they are marketing it as a real fan base community, so most fans would be going to a park, somewhere round the would.
Yep im annoyed at yet again Disney wants more, and gives very little back.
but i still love 'em.I need therapy.:lookaround
“D23 is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and celebrating our fans, who bring the magic of Disney to life every day in every corner of the world.”
thats $75 plus shipping of $6o, thank you so much , thank you, no really thank you

$75.00 !!! They arn't with it when it comes to today's economy. They really don't want members - or so it appears to me. I'll play the wait and see game. Hopefully they will have some East Coast events - the last thing I want to do is to go to California for an 'event'. Maybe someday they will have an 'event' in December rather than in the summer. Not everyone takes summer vacations (or holidays for our UK visitors). :brick::brick:

I joined and paid the ridiculous shipping they don't tell you about if you live outside the U.S. until you're already paying.

I think the two things I see wrong are:

A) Disney is touting D23 as a "Community for fans", but it isn't a community, it's a presentation of information and merchandise. WDWMagic is a community. There is a difference.

B) People here are slamming it for something it's not trying to be. I haven't seen anything on the D23 site or press release that says it's for "real" fans or "true" fans. It is being slammed for being elitist, but there's no pressure to join, no glory in joining. If it were elitist, they'd publish the membership list and lists of who bought the crazy $850 pen... Take it for what it is, a subscription to a quarterly magazine that by appearances is probably worth most of the annual fees charged and a few trinkets and such as "membership benefits". Then there are member-exclusive merchandise ietems that are priced around the same as any other Disney merchandise, but you have to be a member to buy it direct.

My thoughts.
Monty how dare you bring logic and reason to this discussion!

It was a no brainier for me too. I like the magazine and would have purchased it anyway. For a few bucks more I got the membership into the club. While it is true that the only real perk to the club at the moment is some over priced merchandise but who is to say that that will be the only perk. The club has not even been open for 24 hours yet. Give it a chance people. I wonder how peoples tune will change if they start offering in park perks in the not so distant future?

And regarding the high priced pens....It is a niche market that I am surprised Disney has not tapped into yet. Middle of the road Mont Blanc pens go for the $300-$400 range with special editions going for $1000+. I have seen other brands of high end pens going for $5000 or more. Insane yes, but there is a market for it. Here is a link if you do not believe me. high priced pens Much like there is a market for $5000 watches, million dollar cars and multi-million dollar houses. It does not make sense to us normal folks but if there are 2 thousand people out there that will pay $900 for a pen that costs $50 to make I wouldn't mind being the one to sell it to them.

As much as I love Disney and would love to join, $75 is a bit to much for me. Especially now that my work announced a 10% pay cut for at least the next 3 months.

Richard, how dare you call me normal? :lookaroun

:ROFLOL:

I'm with you [sort of] on the no-brainer aspect. For people who don't have access to Barnes & Noble in the contiguous U.S. [or quarterly access to the parks] the only option to get the magazine is membership. From the reviews I've read I want the magazine. Is it worth $35+/issue? Probably not to most, but I like stuff like that and if D23 membership is the only way to get it

I think it's highway robbery to charge the exorbitant shipping Disney is charging, when it increases costs by over 50% [in my case to go less than 100 miles past the border] there is something seriously wrong. But Disney gouging for shipping is certainly nothing new.
