.. except Japan, wonder what is up there...

With extensive experience in the identification and treatment of respiratory diseases and the above-noted tools in hand, Japan decided against mass testing of the general population, and instead deployed very targeted PCR testing combined with extensive tracing and follow-up of any clusters of five suspected cases or more, especially wherever the elderly congregated.

So it could be surging there as well we just don't know because they don't test if you have symptoms.

I'm surprised nearby China is still a GO for the Winter Olympics that starts in several weeks.

I am too but I think it’s a sign we’re learning to live with it. Cases are much higher now than they were when the Japan Olympics were postponed, same is true of pro sports cancelling, last year they all stopped or went into a bubble, this year they’re powering through. Life goes on.

I’ve travelled quite a bit this year but I haven’t ventured outside America yet. It’s one thing to risk getting quarantined close to home, Its another to risk being quarantined in another country under their rules.

Ocean County's drive-thru testing site had to close less than an hour after opening because people were lined up well before the site opened. The statewide positivity rate was 28% on Friday. Between those factors and the increasing hospitalizations numbers you mentioned and the flu season another poster mentioned, I think it's safe to say that a good amount of the people getting tested and testing positive are doing so because they don't feel good (if not the large majority). And then there are the close contacts and people who tested positive on at-home tests who want to confirm their results.
Given the hospitalization numbers, I'd have to assume that a large part of the current NJ outbreak is still Delta and not overwhelmingly Omicron as I suspect is the case in FL.

A hockey tournament was just cancelled because COVID spread so rapidly amongst the teams.
That seems to be what is happening everywhere I keep hearing about - at least anecdotally - it's no longer a couple of people got it here and there, so you send them off to isolate - once one person starts to get symptoms and seems to expose a team/work place/etc. - it's already too late and it's spread amongst the majority.

And again, anecdotally - I work in travel, and cancellations are already up again this week from people who were exposed over Christmas - between this and New Year's, I have a feeling the numbers for the beginning of January are going to unfortunately be very grim, indeed.

But I suspect the comment was more about things happening within the borders of China?

The reality is many countries, companies even TWDC forms partnerships in trade and commerce with the host Winter Olympics nation.

Every player (except Matthew Tkachuk) of the Calgary Flames has tested positive since Dec 13. All vaccinated, all minor cases.

Omicron is a different beast, it’s breakthrough rate is mind boggling, fortunately it looks like the cases among the vaccinated are staying mild.

Despite the whole team being positive in the last 16 days they are practicing again, 16 days from the beginning of their outbreak to the players back on the ice practicing.

That’s insane. Significant under testing. I wonder how high the real case count should be.

Orange County was 45% yesterday?

NJ was in the 45s when testing began a couple of months into the pandemic. This is the highest it's been in ages. I don't even think last winter we got much above the high teens.

I'm not even sure everyone who wants a PCR test for confirmation or first test can get a test right now, which makes the real number potentially very scary. Omicron has shredded our testing infrastructure. The at-home PCR mail-in tests might be the fastest way right now.

I know omicron is supposed to be less severe, particularly with the vaccinated, so I'm not personally anxious, but the high numbers still come with high hospitalizations and a dangerous strain on resources.

And people called me anti-vax when I pointed out that, with Omicron, the vaccines don't do very much to slow the spread.

Yes
Something else no one is going to like… already predictions we will need Fall 2022 boosters and we are going to be facing another round next winter. So plan your holidays accordingly. I wouldn’t be planning on international cruises or flights next year either.

I'm still scared about this. Is really gonna happen or not?

That's key - minor. One can only imagine if those hockey players didn't get the vaccine.
