NY just opened up vaccines for underlying medical conditions. After more than 12 hours of trying on Sunday (the day it opened) we finally got appts for the first week of March! So excited. Now we don't have to cancel our 5/1 Disney vacay, which has been cancelled 4x already! And we will happily wear masks and follow whatever rules there are, after being "shut down" from traveling for a year.

All that Disney planning came in handy for registration?

If your mask works so great then you’ll be fine.
Masks primarily protect others from the wearer, not the wearer from others. If you choose not to wear a mask when among other people, you are endangering them more than you are yourself. Likewise, when people around you wear masks, they are doing more to help you than to help themselves.

I realise that there are differences of opinion on mask-wearing, but I find it bewildering that, almost a whole year on, there’s still confusion about what masks do.

Just amazing that we're still having to explain this very basic concept.

I love you for this post. Sorry some people on here thought it would be appropriate to say you probably don’t brush your teeth because you have issues wearing a mask?? Some of the folks on here can be pretty nasty if you disagree with them...

The mask wearing issue has become an argument that goes too far on both sides. I wear a mask every time I leave my house but I don’t like doing it and I find it annoying. But if you so much as mention that to some people, you’ll get a ton of comments saying “why are you such a baby that you can’t wear a piece of cloth over your face!!” Uhhh I do wear it...? Not sure why some people get so angry when others say masks are less than appealing. I’m not going to pretend I love masks and want to wear one for the rest of my life just so I can virtue signal and pat myself on the back
No one said that about brushing teeth. One person made a quip because of the comment I made about how a clean mask does not cause throat infections so they need to find out why. The other poster was the one who said teeth brushing and stuff getting all offended because we were picking on UK teeth or some level that I do not understand. Mouthwash is to kill bacteria not to say one has poor hygiene. However if one gets infections that much there is a problem doctors need to look at. Unclean masks can (and no it doesn't mean you are filthy). Using a certain mouthwash is indeed a suggestion for those with them (again not poor hygiene just unlucky). An over growth of other bacteria can cause issues. Even reinfection due to not switching a toothbrush can like in the case of strep. Lots of causes that have little to do with brushing teeth. None due to proper mask wearing.

No one also said you cannot find them annoying. I've said that I hate wearing masks and no one jumped on me. The deflection that goes on as well as those playing victim when it's not necessary is a bit much.

Anyone here know which vlogger this is? I watch a lot of vloggers but can't figure out who this is.

This is why I chose not to go to parks, or do anything other then what was required (grocery stores) until I was fully vaccinated. Exposing yourself to other humans increases your chance of developing Covid, no matter how well you mask and social distance. It’s amazing how so few people realize that

I don’t understand why we can’t move this discussion past masks. There has literally been no new ground to cover related to masks in months.

You know the thing I was hoping would take hold and have some societal pressure behind it? Hand washing. I know surface transmission isn't the focus, but it's still a thing - and hand washing helps knock out a lot of other nasty bugs in common circulation as well. Yet, my completely non-scientific and anecdotal survey of behavior in public mens restrooms leads me to believe there hasn't been much improvement in convincing people to regularly wash their hands.

Wasn't Universal enforcing mandatory hand sanitizer use before boarding rides (are they still?)? Did people get offended by that requirement and throw a fit like they do with masks?

I don’t understand why we can’t move this discussion past masks.

1. The science is as sure as science gets: Everyone should be masked.

2. So, private and public institutions tell people to wear masks.

3. Two groups refuse:
  • Political idealogues who try to give Trump cover for his disaster of a response by discrediting science whenever they can; and,
  • Selfish people who find masks inconvenient and jus' don't wanna, so they frame this as an attack on liberty (and they also attack the science, too, if that helps their case)
4. So, #2 and #3 will perpetually be at odds.

It is not a misnomer. Human bites that break the skin are almost always infected. Of the three most common bites we treat in the medical field, dog bites are the "cleanest", followed by cats, then human.
I thought cat and dog tended to be worse because they are typically deeper puncture wounds than a human bite, so more likely to get into the bloodstream and more difficult to clean the wound. (At least, that's what I was told when we I got bit by a cat and the vet sent me straight to the urgent care.)

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled mask discussion. My DD had a gymnastics competition, yesterday. Only 1 spectator per athlete, spectators and judges masked, athletes masked when not actively competing. So thoguh the girls took their masks off to perform, many kept them on while warming up. I think if someone can do high level gymnastics while wearing a mask, most of us shouldn't have a problem wearing one to buy groceries. :)

I'm not sure if a mandated vaccination would get past the right to privacy precedent set by that famous case which should not be discussed in any way, shape or form in this thread. For the Government to know if you were vaccinated, they would have to violate your right to privacy.
But there already is some precedent in the govt knowing about one's vaccination history, as children have to provide vaccination records (or reason for lack thereof) in order to go to public school.

Is there will be one more surge aka UK variant or not in Spring aka March/April? I'm scared about this, I'm think vaccines will still time to stop UK variants before will or not surge by next month. @GoofGoof

The reason your vet was so concerned with the cat bite is the possibility of contracting cat scratch fever and that makes you sound like Ted Nugent - loony and dangerous

The caveat in my statement is "human bites that break the skin". Human bites are less likely to puncture than animal bites (we bite with less sharp incisor teeth, while dogs and cats use long, pointed canine teeth) but when the skin is violated, we must assume infection. Whereas with dog and cats, it depends on the depth.
