Confessions of a DFTW Bride To Be

We wanted to get married at the Wedding Pavilion but it was already taken even before we went down to plan our wedding. We were really bummed about that, however after viewing the Wedding Pavilion we were actually glad. We got married at the Gazebo at the Yacht Club and could not have been more happy, in fact we talk all time now that we were glad that the Wedding Pavilion was taken. Here are a few pictures from our wedding, good luck in planning yours.

TomHendricks - your pictures are stunning - I am absolutely GREEN envy!

I've been obsessed with the Wedding Pavilion ever since it opened when I was 11. I never thought I would actually be able to get married there, I thought it would be way too expensive. I think that the Escape weddings are so perfect for people like me who want something kind of fancy but on a small scale and budget. This is a dream come true for me and I just know I'll be crying in all of my pictures :) I get teary every time I even think about it! I just know that because it's Disney, it's going to be absolutely magical.

Heh, how much of a nerd am I? A Microsoft conference and then a Star Wars Weekend? Where's my pocket protector?

(LOL...at least it would be a Disney pocket protector....)

Fashionista - thank you SO much for sharing your day with all of us!!! I'm getting married in August of 2011, and while he proposed in WDW, and we're Honeymooning in WDW, we would've had 300 ticked off people who wouldn't have been able to enjoy a WDW wedding with us, so I am SO glad I get to live vicariously through yours!!! I'm a people-pleaser as well, so this wedding stuff has been tough. Let's just say - be glad you only have 18 people coming to the ceremony!

All of your ideas sound fantastic, the shoes and dress are beautiful, and way to stick to your guns about the Wedding Pavilion. I would've been the same - and am a little bit the same with my honeymoon. Have ALWAYS dreamed of staying at the GF, and even though it would be SO much cheaper to stay elsewhere, it's my ONE time to do what I want to do, before we start saving for a house, having little ones, etc. ;~) Please continue to keep us updated with your wedding - it is going to be absolutely beautiful - I can tell already!

Ok, so I went backwards and read this thread first. But totally just read your engagement post - my fiancee proposed on Splash Mountain in August - and I got so re-excited for you!!!!! (and then remembered how excited I was, which caused me to look at my ring, and then scroll to look at your ring...and now I'm listening to Fantasyland background music at work on my computer.) ;~))) Congrats again!!!

You can actually book it through the Disney Wedding planners. We actually had a children's reception that went on during our reception. This allowed the adults to play and have fun not worrying about the kids. We hired Kids Night Out, they brought all kinds of toys and fun things to do. We also got Belle to do story time and read to the kids. So we took the opportunity to get pictures with her.

Thanks for reading :) We are thinking the same thing...celebrate now before the little ones are on the way! I think it's funny how people are always asking when we're having kids now that we're engaged. Slow down! We would like to be married for a few years before we have kids.

Congrats on your engagement! I'm glad I'm not the only one that listens to BGM while I'm at work ;) Do you have an engagement TR?

All the photos are absolutly beautiful!!

Congrats to everyone one their upcoming and just passed weddings!!! :)

Thanks Auroragirl :) Aurora is my favorite princess too! Thanks for reading!

Sounds like things are going well, so far! Looking forward to hearing more!

I think things are going well because with DFTW it's really one-stop shopping. I'm having fun with it but at the same time it is stressful to coordinate a destination wedding. I can't even imagine having a Wishes wedding with hundreds of people!

Helpful Tips

I have been scouring the interwebs for information specifically for Escape brides on how to lock down a date. The best information I found was that you can (and should) contact your wedding sales rep periodically and ask for an update on bookings for your lottery dates. As of Thanksgiving weekend there were absolutely no other bookings for any of our lottery dates/times. I just sent Michelle another request but she is out of the office until the new year (as am I woohoo for winter break). I'm counting down to 1/25/2011 which is the day I will find out if our first choice is available - Sunday 9/25/2011 12PM.

Another friggin fantastic tip I read is that you can contact Disney Photography through their website and have them mail you a sample DVD of their videography packages.

http://www.disneyeventphotography.com/

I clicked on Contact Us and sent them an email with my request. I received a response the next day with the Disney customer service that I have grown to know and love. They sent me PDFs containing pricing information for different packages and such. I should be getting my DVD soon, I last emailed them on 12/15.

Happy Holidays

This holiday season has been very different for us and we are SO excited that our families are so excited for our wedding! We spent Thanksgiving with DF's Father and Stepmother's family. My future Father In Law was introducing me as his first daughter (he has 4 boys) and I had to choke back tears of joy! DF and his Father weren't even speaking a few years ago but the progression of our relationship has brought them very close together. He can't wait for grandchildren, he's told us so :)

Christmas was our usual try-to-see-everybody-in-one-day fiasco. We always go to 3 different places on Christmas. Man I can't wait to have kids so we don't have to do that anymore. We started off with breakfast at my sister's (one of my 3 Maids/Matrons of honor), lunch at my future mother in law's, then dinner at my future father in law's. It was a good day but hectic.

How We're Doing On Budget

Sigh. When you're planning a wedding, it is SO difficult to stay within your budget. I keep seeing things that I want and yes it is a very special event that I have been dreaming about since I was a little girl but I don't want to go into debt because of it. I haven't talked numbers with either side of the family yet but both sides have mentioned that we will be getting money. We have just been planning the wedding as if we are paying for it so we can use any money we get towards a down payment on a house (or DVC, we'll see lol). My original budget was $10k (not including the honeymoon). Here's where we are now:

Escape Package: $5,750
Mickey & Minnie: $1,350
Videography Package: $1,400
MK/EPCOT Photo Shoot: $1,190 (15% off when you purchase a Videography package from Disney)

Total: $9,690

That's not even including other expenses like:
Wedding Dress/Alterations
Shoes, accessories
Wedding Rings
Bridal Party Gift Bags
Groomsmen Gift Bags
Tux Rental/Alterations
Hotel Welcome Bags
Hair & Makeup
Favors
Invitations
Officiant & Marriage License
Illuminations Dessert Party
Extra flowers & decorations

There are probably some costs I'm not thinking of, feel free to chime in :) I'm not stressing over all of this too much. Mickey & Minnie are really the only have-to-haves on the list. I can do without the photo sessions and videography. Photography is included in the escape package, I just wanted Videography because I'm having such a small wedding and I wanted people to be able to see the ceremony. I have read wedding reports where people got married at the Wedding Pavilion for not much more than the Escape package price and their pictures were beautiful.

New Years Resolution

"Obviously to lose 20 lbs." - Bridget Jones :) 2010 was a good year for me, I lost a whopping 40 lbs.

I went from this:

dcp_0646.jpg

To this!

DSCN0261.jpg

I lost the weight by walking and recording everything I ate using http://www.dailyburn.com. I also used Alli which I think really helped me. I had never used supplements in the past to lose weight but I was trying to lose so much and I felt that it helped me to get over a few plateaus. I bought Wii Fit Plus and used it to record my weight every day, I love it! However, during the holiday season I gained about 8 lbs and I need to get back to my diet. I would like for my arms to have a little less waddle for my wedding :)

So that's what's been going on in the world of Shelley & Jason. I'm almost tempted to upgrade to a Wishes wedding (I'm so close to the minimum $10k anyway) just so I can get with the deposit and contract already! I just have to be patient and wait it out. I think September is perfect for us because we got engaged at MNSSHP so I want our colors to be an autumn bounty of light yellow, red, black, etc (not to mention Mickey's colors are yellow, red and black hehe). I feel like I've done so much research that I'm not going to need 2 30 minute planning sessions. I can basically tell my coordinator what I want the first time we talk :)

Happy Holidays to everyone and here's to a wonderful new year!

Hi, Shelley! I've finally had a chance to browse through your planning report... and everything looks great so far. I really hope you get your preferred date and time... having to wait it out really sounds brutal. We were already within the 8 month mark when we booked our escape package so I got lucky and didn't have to deal with that (plus hardly anyone chooses Sunset Point so that helped). All my initial stress was wrapped up in wedding dress shopping. Uggghhhh. So many stores were freaking out on me because I hadn't ordered one yet (and I was still 5 months out).

Congratulations on losing the weight, that's awesome!

Hey Shel! Happy Holidays! Sounds like you've got everything well in hand. I wish I could be more help with budgeting, etc. but I lack experience in wedding planning. I've just been around to help with dresses: shopping and/or making custom gowns. In contrast, my little wedding at my in-law's house cost a total of about $275 including everything, clothes, food, rings, even blood tests. Lol! If it makes you feel any better, I don't think I've ever heard of any wedding coming in on or under budget. At least you aren't doing a second mortgage or anything to cover the costs, right?

Big kudos on the weight loss, girl! Dang! That's awesome. 2010 was a bad year for me. I gained some of my old weight back. A few times I started back down the scale but then I bounced back up. I've lacked focus & commitment. Then we did the DDP last month & I'm up by 10. Grrrr!!! I got a bicycle from Santa (1st since I was 7 yrs old) so maybe it'll help. I gotta do something. Most of my clothes don't fit and I refuse to buy new. Lol!

It's so strange but cool to become someone else's daughter when you get married. That part stood out to me in a good way, too. I have amazing inlaws who I totally adore. I can't imagine life without them. Tracey's family was soooo the icing on the cake for me when we got married. I love his family so, so much.

Lovin' all the details. I think your dates are going to work out just fine. Keep us posted!

Happy 2011!!!

Thanks Holly! I'm so excited for you, it's getting close right (Feb/March)? I was originally going to wait it out until Dec 2011 so I could get married at Christmas and I'm so glad we bumped it up to Sept. I can hardly stand this wait, can you imagine if I waited until Dec??

I can't wait to go wedding dress shopping. I definitely want to go to Alfred Angelo's. I can't afford a Disney inspired gown but they have SO many options that are in a good price range (i.e. <$500). I'm going to get my bridal party together with the Moms and hopefully make a day of it. I just hope it's not half as crazy as my sister's wedding dress shopping. We went to David's Bridal and I thought I was going to get trampled. Brides everywhere! Shouting, loud, pushy brides! I hope it's a bit quieter at Alfred's.

Happy 2011!!!

Thanks Kelly :) Happy Holidays to you and yours!

I don't think I'll be stressing over the budget as much once we talk numbers with our parents. Like I said, we're not expecting anything and we're planning this as if we're paying for it so we're still well within our means. I just want to leave enough money so we can have a nice home reception for our friends and family to view the wedding video and pictures. A few years ago a friend of mine got married in Vegas and they streamed the ceremony live. I know Disney doesn't have anything like that but maybe someone in the audience could hold up their phone and broadcast via UStream :p

Losing weight is SO hard the older you get. I've been up and down all my life. When I graduated college in 2002 I weighed about 125. I'm not that optimistic, I do not think I'll weigh that ever again. I've done L.A. Weight Loss, Jenny Craig, South Beach, Calorie King, Daily Burn, etc. The only thing that has ever worked for me has been recording everything I eat and staying under 1500 calories and 50 grams of fat. I just have to keep the determination I had when we were getting ready for our Sept 2010 trip. I kept telling myself that I didn't want to look fat in all the pictures. But it's not all about looks is it? I find that I lose weight better when I make it about my overall health, not my looks.

I'm so blessed to be marrying into such a wonderful family. I can't wait for our families to meet! They haven't met yet because my parents live in Virginia and I don't get to see them that often. We talk and text all the time but life gets in the way and we don't get to visit much.

23 Days and counting till we move forward with the contracts! :sohappy:

You are SO right about that! Congratulations on losing 40 lbs--I took off 10 lbs. last year that had crept up on me after I hit a certain milestone, ;) and I thought that was tough! Good for you! :sohappy:

I've come to the conclusion that past a certain point, watching what you eat is no longer enough--I was carefully watching what I ate, but didn't start seeing the scale shift until I hit the exercise room! Now I've just got to keep that up...ugh. :dazzle:

Thank you so much! I totally agree with you about the exercise. I lost more weight quicker when I went walking at lunch. Sitting in an office all day really slows down your metabolism. What sucks is, I don't have the motivation to exercise but once I do I feel fabulous! I wish I could re-program myself to love exercise :)

Disney came out with a bunch of specials yesterday and they are even better than the wedding room block discount which was 10% off Value Resorts, 20% off Moderate, and 30% off deluxe. Now they're offering 20% off of Values, 25% off of Moderates, 35% off deluxe, and 40% off of deluxe villas! I'm SO excited now I don't have to worry about setting up a room block! I will call a travel agent though and set up communication with them so my wedding party will have one central person to call to book their vacations.

I did a LOT of wedding stuff over the weekend. Sunday was pretty much my wedding indulgence day :) I found some really good information though!

Tux Rentals
Apparently the Men's Warehouse will take your order in the state you live in and then the shop in Orlando will friggin deliver all of the tuxes to your resort 2 days before the wedding! If anything doesn't fit, they take it back and bring you new stuff. How easy is that?? I was worrying about the guys taking them on the plane, returning them on time, etc. They will even pick them up at your resort once you are finished with them. I love it.

Invitations?
I was mulling over whether or not to send invitations. I'm only having 18 people and I already know everyone is coming. But I thought it would be nice to send something written to everyone. I was looking at prices for invitations and they're ridiculous! Plus they generally come in packs of 25 and I really only need 8. So I was searching around on other sites to see what other Disney brides have done and I stumbled upon Newsletters. The trend is to send a few newsletters out during the months before your wedding to give your guests the itinerary, booking information, etc. I'm going to send mine out the minute we book our wedding! I already have it drafted up, I used Microsoft Publisher. I really wanted to use Illustrator but I don't have a copy :(

Favors
I found the cutest little personalized candy jars and I'm going to fill them with Disney Sweet Tarts:

FavorJars.jpg

FavorCandy.jpg

Hotel Gift Bags
I found a store that has nice quality but inexpensive canvas tote bags that they will apply a design to for free! I already found the design I want and I can create it myself. So, everyone will get their own bag! I know it's customary to give one bag per room but since I'm having such a small wedding I can take the liberty of spoiling my guests :) Plus, they're spending so much money to come to my wedding and I would really like to do something nice for them.

Inside the tote bags will be personalized bottles of water (I'm making the labels), chap stick, sunblock, and Disney starburst candies. I'm also going to make up folders with information such as itinerary, contact info, and I'm going to print a touring plan for each group based on their needs. Hmm now that I'm thinking about it, wouldn't it be cool to go to Kinko's and have all the stuff bound instead of a folder? That would be more of a keepsake because it would be protected.

We will have to make up the gift bags when we get there, I don't think there's any way to transport all that stuff otherwise. I'm not sure how it works if people stay at different hotels, will I need to go to each hotel to drop off the gift bags at the front desk?

I'm loving all this planning! Someone asked me at work today when I was getting married and I beamed and said "September". It's going to be here before I know it!!!

For our wedding, we rented our tuxes from Men's Warehouse and did exactly what you said. It really worked out well, especially since we were leaving Disney to go to Aruba for our honeymoon. Plus my brother and brother-in-law stayed well beyond when we left for our honeymoon.

We assembled our gift bags down in Disney and you have to deliver them to each of the hotels where your guest are staying. We had 50 guest, but it was easy for us because they all stayed at Port Orleans. We paid for everyone to stay 2 nights and they got a discount if they wanted to stay longer. However we had a few people stay other places, so we got all our bags assembled. Then we called for a cab, and went on a run to each of the hotels. The Disney people were great, just gave them the name of each group and they took care of it. Everyone got their bags and we had no issues at all.

Thank you so much for the information! I know I can always ask my wedding coordinator but I like to get the information from my perspective sometimes too. Plus, I feel like I bug her too much :) You have been a godsend seriously, thank you!

It's my pleasure to be any help I can. I was unaware of this board when we got married and had no one to get information from. Like you we didn't want to bother our wedding coordinator. Nothing excited me more then planning our wedding, so I completely get where your coming from. If I can be any help, please feel free to ask.

Your favors are adorable!!! :) Also--- I might have missed it, but are you doing a post-wedding meal??

We are planning to do an Illuminations Dessert Party for our guests. I really hope we can do it the night of our wedding, that would be perfection :)

Thank you so much :) Jason and I were wondering how do we handle our marriage license? Do we have to go off property to get it or does the officiant bring it? Speaking of officiant - who did you have and how did you like him/her?

I ordered my Cinderella glass slippers from Belissima Bridal the other day and I should get them tomorrow! That's the first wedding purchase we made :) I'm going dress shopping at Alfred Angelo's on 2/20 with an entourage of 7 girls with me. Too bad I can't afford Kleinfeld's or I could be on Say Yes To The Dress!

[/URL]!

You have to have your Marriage license before the ceremony. The best and easiest way is to the license by mail. There are several companies out there and this is how we did it. I'm trying to find the name of our officiant, when I do I will pass it along. Our officiant did a great thing, we had to meet him the day before our actual wedding. However he dated our wedding certificate for the day of our wedding.
