Trip Report *COMPLETED* No Ring (delayed), No Rivers Light, & Donald Duck’s the President

As I stir my pasta noodles for dinner, a single tear slides down my cheek. DEPRESSION. It’s cold, it’s dark, and I am home…this unfamiliar place that is not my Disney World hotel room. (PLUS WHY AM I COOKING?!) This cold Philadelphia air chills me to the core, and when I woke up this morning I contemplated chucking my cell phone out the window. I knew my alarm was waking me up for work, not to catch a Disney bus. What is this life?! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY does it have to end?! The hardest part of planning, and changing your plans, and obsessing over your plans, and then finally living out your plans is the part at the end. The part where it’s all over, it’s all done, and going on a Disney website, or checking a restaurant menu is like pouring salt on an open wound.

As you can tell from my title, no I didn’t get my Disney World proposal and no I didn’t get to see Rivers of Light. Thought I would throw all the heartbreak right at you from the get go, so we can move on to happier memories. (This just means my boyfriend owes me a BIGGER diamond, and a trip back! Maybe when ROL opens?!)

I have just returned from the most fabulous trip to Disney, and I am already itching to go back. I am trying to convince someone, anyone (hello out there!) to book a weekend getaway… That’s the thing with Disney, they always leave you wanting more! Unless it’s it just something us Disney addicts feel, we are always eager for our next fix!

For those who don’t know me, I’m Nicole, and I love Disney World. I have loved Disney World for 11 years now. (This is how they start these meetings right?!)

I was in the Disney bubble from November 4th to November 13th and it was not enough time. NOT ENOUGH TIME I TELL YOU!!! I stayed at Port Orleans Riverside and fell truly, madly, and deeply in love with this BEAUTIFUL riverside resort. My last two trips have been in July and August, and I think those trips (in the summer nonetheless) were MUCH less crowded. SO MANY PEOPLE! It was the end of a race weekend, the last week of food and wine, NJ teacher convention week, and election week. One word of advice, DO NOT EVER GO AT THIS TIME! (keep rereading the go at as goat LOL)

Let’s begin!

November 4th-

Our flight was not until 5:50 PM Friday night. I originally was planning to work in the morning, but it turned out I was able to take the whole day off. Of course I woke up super early with excitement, did all my last minute packing, and then stared at the clock for hours on end. Go figure!

This text arrived and my anxiety immediately started kicking in. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN! Will we not have room? Will they downgrade us to a tent along the riverbank? Will I have to fight off alligators and zika mosquitoes while sleeping outside? My boyfriend tried to calm my fears, and decided we should get a move on it. Airport here we come!

SEPTA was on strike (public transportation buses, etc) so of course traffic was nightmare! I tried my hardest not to freak out and bite off all my nails before even reaching Orlando.

After what seemed like forever, we made it! Hustled through security and straight for the bar!

Round 1

Round 2

Round 3—oops?

2F886687-D05C-43E1-8645-E74B01EDE1F2_zpsgob94hfj.jpg

And our first food picture of the trip! Chicken tenders! My anxiety was so high all day that I forgot to eat, and I was feeling pretty tipsy. Food is always a good idea!

We paid our tab, and decided to wait by the gate for our magical plane to Orlando! TAKE ME HOME BABY!!!

Ummm.. where is our plane?

E6D9AC7F-8DA7-4399-9AC9-733C02DC834A_zpsujuaa1nn.jpg

Come to find out our flight is delayed until 7 PM… I was too hyper and couldn’t sit still so off we went to check out the airport shops and burn off some energy.

We stumbled upon this wonderful sight, and couldn’t resist.

So much for trying to stay hungry to use up those quick service meals tonight!

The time ticked by soooooooooooo slowly. We watched a woman scream at the American Airlines attendant because he was making her check her bag… SCREAM. She kept threatening him, saying she was going to call Disney and tell them he ruined her trip. There was a family standing beside us, and they told the father he had to go on a later flight because they oversold the plane, and even he didn’t go as ballistic as this woman. Getting to Disney is stressful people!

Soon I was admiring this stunning view. HAPPY PLACE HERE I COME!

And we’re off!

5BB8E543-68A5-47FC-8F92-6138612BE98A_zps2sdvsm7r.jpg

Our flight was quick and painless, and soon the announcement came on that we arrived in Orlando!! A little boy a few rows behind us screamed out “NOOOOOOOO, we went to the wrong place! We are supposed to be in Disney World!”

I showed my boyfriend what I pro I was at maneuvering through the Orlando airport, B side, you can’t hide from me! My Mickey turned green and all my anxiety from earlier in the day melted away. The familiar aroma of the Orlando airport, the big Mickey hands waving you home, the smiling cast member’s faces, it didn’t matter if I’d be sleeping in a river, I was here!

77C06C58-A998-4E94-96FF-EF2F9C4F016E_zpspqch4zsc.jpg

Our magical express filled up quickly, and I didn’t even mind that we were one of the last stops. I soaked up that arrival feeling, the feeling that a full trip is ahead of you, that this really is the ultimate moment of beginning, that the possibilities are truly endless. Plus, it gave me more time to answer trivia questions! I think everyone on the bus thought I was psycho with the amount I got right!

And off we drove into the night. Even though the sign wasn’t lit up due to construction, I still felt it. The transition to being “on property”. That butterflies fluttering in your stomach feeling, when you know you’ve truly been welcomed home.

Despite having licked our platters clean, we still had to sample dessert! The sampler came with the package so we got to try Valencia blood orange cake, tiramisu, and lemon cheesecake. I think the tiramisu was my favorite! Joe was down for the count, so basically this turned into a Nicole sampler. Nicole eats everything in sight is a common problem.

Our waitress gave us Fantasmic tickets, I was overjoyed!
So much for all my stressing out about losing my ADR when they put Rock and Roll down for refurbishment on my original Hollywood Studios day. (I didn't type MGM that time, I'm learning!!)

Mama Melrose's was amazing as always. The food, the ambiance, the service. It was all outstanding. While checking to find the correct names of what we ordered, I came across this little blurb on the Disney World Website.

"Once upon a time, a young girl from a small Sicilian village moved to Hollywood to become a star. However, she soon found that cooking was her true calling as she re-created her papa’s secret recipes for her starving actor friends.
At their urging, she opened a restaurant in a vacant backlot warehouse once used to store film equipment. Mama’s culinary talents soon attracted the patronage of film industry insiders, who dubbed her Mama Melrose, after the lively Los Angeles thoroughfare. Her establishment became known as the place “where Italy meets California in the heart of the Backlot,” and the rest, as they say, is history."

Doesn't that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside? I was so nervous Mama Melrose wasn't going to make it through the construction. I am so happy that it's not only there, but it's better than ever!

We missed Pizzerizzo by a couple days, but we will be back ;)

We wanted to go to the Indy show but they were turning people away because they reached capacity. Star Tours had a 40 minute wait so we hopped in line...

The wait turned out to be an hour and some change... but we got to witness CMs use tape and change the ropes to the queue which was pretty cool! I don't know to really explain it, but they would tape the end of the rope and then tuck it in somewhere else on the rope and you couldn't see it at all!

Soon we were inside, and thank goodness because Joe was being constantly hit by a light saber! The child behind us kept fighting the air and he must have whacked Joe about 30 times. I was cracking up! Good thing Joe is such a good sport LOL

We then headed to Muppet Vision, the old guys are my favorite!
Do we have time to go to the bathroom before the next show?
We can't we're bolted to the seats!
:) Gets me everytime!!

We were luckier the second time around with Indiana Jones. I hadn't seen this show in awhile and Joe really enjoyed it on our 2011 trip, so I am thrilled we were able to make it in the theater! We were told there was standing room only, but as we made our way in they made everyone shift over to the right. It was crazy how many seats became available after this! We had a pretty good view despite everything!

The stunt show had us on the edge of our seats the whole time! It was as if we'd never seen it before! I enjoyed the movie making behind the scenes magic and I'm glad the stunt show has survived the makeover! That is for now I guess!

Gertie was blowing smoke and I had never seen this before! I may have shrieked a little bit. Oops LOL

Gertie was constructed in 1989 as a tribute to the history she played in animated film. Gertie the Dinosaur was released in 1913 by newspaper cartoonist Winsor McCay. She was one of the first popular animated characters and was admired by Walt Disney himself. Gertie paved the way for animators and I pray to the heavens they never pave her over! Keep blowing that smoke, dear Gertie! I love you :)

The wait time for Rock and Roll had dropped to 60 minutes, so Joe and I figured what the heck, let's go get in line. (Single rider had been closed all day to boot.) It was about 5:30 at this point so I thought we'd for sure have time to ride and make it to Fantasmic.

We start watching the minutes go past, it's 6:00, then it's 6:15, then it's 6:30. We finally make inside the actual building. I still had hope for Fantasmic.

We both made it on the screens! Wahoo! I love these small intimate touches! :) :) Come check out my orchestra!

Once inside, the line stops moving. I watch the clock go past 6:45 and my heart breaks just a tad. Joe tells me he is perfectly fine with getting out of line to go see Fantasmic. I told him it was now principle, we were getting on this ride. In 2011, Fantasmic didn't play every night, so Joe missed it back then too. Maybe he is the jinx! Guess we will have to go back to see if 3rd time's the charm! :)

7235571A-FBBE-4D69-BF18-9872FEE77BE2_zpsjgtgnrd4.jpg

In the end, we waited about 95 minutes for Rock and Roll, but I couldn't come to Disney World and not ride it! I had switched all my days around in order to include this attraction in my plans! It's such an amazing attraction and Aerosmith is just classic! And look! Joe learned the hand symbol for rock and roll! So overall, this was a win! :p

Make it a stretch, in fact, make it a super stretch!

Sometimes you just have to play the Disney World "Would you rather?" game.

We exited, and it was now dark out! We may have missed Fantasmic, but another night time spectacular was about to occur. And it would be a first for us both! The Fantasmic gods weren't playing in our favor, but would the force be with us?!

:p

Great proposal story! It was great that he included your friend so they could take pictures of the moment, yet still stay hidden.

I loved you photos and comments about the Christmas party parade, it is a great parade.

Thank you! The whole friend idea was awesome! I didn't think Joe had that kind of creativity in him! LOL.. the pictures are an amazing memory. She almost did as good as photopass :p

And thank you! That parade took my breath away!

Mama Melrose is one of our favorites! Since DD18 still eats like a kid, they let her order a side of the mac and cheese as her meal and it is heavenly!

Mmmmmmm!!! I don't blame her! It was super yummy! Can Mama Melrose come cook for me at home?!

It was in this instant that I recalled a pretzel I wanted to try! Back down Sunset Blvd we scrambled! Sweet cream cheese here I come!

It was freaking delicious! Worth every stroller I dodged! Mmmm Mmmmm good! Joe told me to meet him over by the restrooms at ToT, he couldn't fathom how I could be eating again. Don't you know who I am?!

While I waited for him to find me, I found this creepy little man peeking out the window!

How cool is that? LOL

We trucked back down Sunset, we had to get good spots for the Star Wars fireworks! I had heard such great things, and it took Disney forever to finally release times for this show! There was no way we were missing this!

It was so surreal to be staring at the Chinese theater. Wasn't there an abnormally large object that usually blocked the beautiful view?

The Star Wars fireworks were awesome! I am a newbie to the Star Wars universe, and I must admit I fell asleep when Yoda was walking through the woods, but even I appreciated this show. It was magical and the effects blew us away. To see Darth Vader projected onto the theater just about exceeded any of expectations. Joe and I were both about to go buy some light sabers. We were ready to save the universe. I am so happy Hollywood Studios now offers firework shows! It's kind of strange that they seem to shoot off to the side, I wonder if they are reworking the entrance setup when Star Wars land is complete. Guess I better go get stalking on that project!

Fireworks > Hat any day.

We got back to Port Orleans, and Joe was finally hungry again! Geesh, it was about time! We ordered pizzas to take back to our room. There's nothing like a late night snack in a Disney bed! Am I right?!

Of course after housing a whole pizza, I was hyper. Joe went out to refill our mugs one last time before bed, and I took these totally embarrassing photos.

I think I loved my Epcot sweatshirt a little toooooo much. Or maybe that grapefruit beer from earlier was spiked! :p

Another wonderful Disney day was coming to a close. It breaks my heart to know I only have a little bit more of my trip report!
:( :( :( :(

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year! Stay safe, be positive, and cheers to a wonderful 2017! May the new year be filled with family, friends, and Disney trips! :p

Loving all the photos I always think I just about have every picture possible at Disney but I still see some from different angles that I don't have. Loved all the Christmas parade photos. I have never seen that figure in TOT before! I don't want your report to end now as I have relived our trip again by reading yours. Happy 2017 to you too, here's hoping you get another trip and a wedding fitted into it :)

Thanks to @Doc Disney we both ordered the charred strip steak with five cheese macaroni. I told Joe I had seen photos of this before, and it looked amazing.

The steak was amazing, the mac and cheese was amazing.... I thank you @Doc Disney for your wonderful trip reports, and for making me order this heavenly dish!

Oh hooray I'm glad you liked it :) I always get nervous when I rave about things that people are going to hate them :D. I wish I could have some of that steak and mac and cheese right now!!!

I loved Joe's version of a "Disney Proposal"! Your big smiles say it all!

Mele Kalikimaka...you've never seen National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase? If not, you must, it's a classic. I always think of that movie when I hear that song.

The Christmas parade looks awesome. One day I'll see it!

haha...I do too...that pool scene goes through my mind every time!:hilarious:

Joe loved it enough for another trip soon!? How about June SOON? It's a totally reasonable request. He'll be all for it.

That Kristoff was gorgeous.. I would have been staring too. Though I do love me some Beast. :inlove: I'm not judging you. We are the same.

The Christmas party.. I just don't even have the words. I WILL GET THERE.

I am DYING at you sitting so close to Ariel.. I get so weird and awkward sometimes too and leave the meet and greet praying that I didn't freak them out too much. :hilarious:

I might steal that report title for my next one.. Sounds about right for my trips, too. ;)

If you don't eat constantly at Disney, you're not doing it right. I salute you.

Loved hearing all about your DHS day and I have to say I learned a lot on this day of your TR. Lot's of interesting facts about Shirley Temple, the backstory behind Mama Melrose's, and Gertie the Dinosaur, so thanks for sharing!

Now I'm regretting that I did not have the steak at Mama Melrose's now. It'll be on my radar for the next time I go there. Something interesting that I learned about the Fantasmic Dining Package Fp's on our last trip is that they are good for I think 5 days after you receive them. So if you wind up missing Fantasmic on the night you receive them, you can attend another viewing of it within the next few nights. We got held up on TSMM and missed our entrance window, so we wound up returning the next night. I don't know if this would've done much to help you though because I know you were towards the end of your trip by this time, but good to know for the future!

My Dad can't do the rock star sign either. We took a picture in front of Rock n Roller Coaster and he wound up looking like Spiderman about to shoot webs out of his arms lol.

A little off the topic, but I know you mentioned that you aren't sure where to start with your wedding planning. I may not be married or engaged, but I'm pretty much a professional bridesmaid by now, so I guess I've learned a thing or two about wedding planning. What has worked well for my friends and family members is to start by attending some bridal expos or showcases. Not sure if they have them a lot near you, but they seem to have them every few weeks around here. It can give you an idea of what is out there and give you an opportunity to meet with several different vendors at once. I would just create a separate email account to sign up with because afterwards you will probably get a ton of emails from different vendors trying to attract your business. Anyway thats my suggestion. Hope it helps!
