Trip Report COMPLETE...And that's how you give a cat a pill - an August trip report

Hello all. Thanks for reading the 2015 version of the Burnett family trip report. Hopefully you find it enjoyable. I'll add days as I find time, but this may take a while.

Anyone want to read the pre-trip report - here's the link: http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/the-trip-that-almost-wasn’t….898587/#post-6672384

Intros

So nothing much has changed in terms of the travel party (other than every time I do this we seem to be a year older than the last time).

STUDIO_SUNSET2_7433501884.jpeg

From left to right there is our DD Stephanie (14), myself (Graham – 40), my DW Tammy (XX) and our DS Liam (12). We were down at WDW from August 15th to the 25th. We spent 6 nights at a Poly studio and 4 nights at a WL studio.

Some background

So if you read our last trip report (http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/...in-between-an-august-2014-trip-report.889324/), you may remember that near the end of the trip it was announced that the company I worked for (Tim Hortons), had announced that they were merging with Burger King. There was a lot of uncertainty about what the future would hold after that announcement, and we weren’t sure when we’d be back to WDW. Fast forward to January 26th of this year…I’m sitting in my office when the phone rings and I’m called down to one of the “extra” offices we have. Long story short, my position was deemed redundant, and I was relieved of my duties.

However, a few weeks later I had a new job. After taking a few weeks off to relax, I started my new job…and our next WDW trip was back on.

Once we knew the trip was on we started our normal prep stuff (buying gift cards at Sam’s club or Target each month). By the time we were ready to leave we had enough cards to pay for all the meals etc. I then went on the Disney gift card website and merged all the cards into 3 cards. This made life easier for us (fewer cards to carry) and for the CMs (who didn’t have to scan a bunch of $50 cards when we went to pay our bill).

Well, that’s it for background….So here we go

Day 1 – Aug 15 – A different start

So August 15th finally arrived. Everyone was really excited and had trouble sleeping the night before…Speaking of the night before…this was the first year we didn’t stay at a hotel near the airport. Being so close to the Buffalo airport, we always book flights on either Southwest or Jet Blue out of Buffalo, as they are significantly cheaper than flying out of either Toronto or Hamilton (our hometown). However, this year our flights weren’t until later in the afternoon (3:45), so we didn’t need to stay overnight since it’s only a 1 hour drive from our home to the Buffalo Airport.

So there we were, up nice and early, car already packed and ready to go. We were going to take the kids to their karate class (Steph is a yellow belt and Liam is a brown belt), but then decided it wasn’t worth risking one of them getting hurt so decided we’d just head out early. We made a quick stop at the bank to pick up some US $, and then headed out.

The trip down to Buffalo was fine until we got to the border. We have NEXUS cards (basically means we are pre-screened so we can get through customs quickly – think of it like a customs Fast Pass). However, this time we presented our cards to the officer, and we were then asked to pull over. It turns out there wasn’t anything wrong, but we had been selected for a compliance check. We weren’t really sure what that meant, but we were asked to pull over and get out of the vehicle. A few minutes later another officer came over and did a quick search of the interior of our vehicle, then handed us back our cards and our keys and said we were good to go. Well that was different.

After crossing the border we made a quick stop at Sam’s Club and Target to pick up a few last minute things, and then headed to Cracker Barrel for lunch. After a good lunch we headed over to the airport. We went to the long-term parking lot and found a spot. Right after we pulled in the shuttle came up behind us, and before we knew it we were at the main terminal…which was absolutely packed. It turns out the Baltimore airport had a power loss, so no flights were going in and out, which was causing a back-log. The line inside to get to the Southwest desk wasn’t moving, so we headed outside and did the curbside check-in which was much shorter. Our bags were all within the right weight, so all was good.

Next up was airport security. Fortunately, since we have NEXUS cards, we can sign up for pre-screening at the airport, so there was no wait there either – other than Liam got pulled over for a secondary check (seems to be a theme). They did a hand swab and then put the swab into a computer and a few seconds later he was given the all clear. After that all was good

It's funny how things change. Here is a picture of what our kids were doing waiting for our first trip to Disney (7 years ago):

and this is what pre-flight boarding looks like now:

There's our plane:

Our flight left on time, and was relatively uneventful (I fell asleep for most of the flight which was great).

I didn't choose the thug life...(and my kids think I'm a total dork now).

We arrived in Orlando around 6:30, right in the middle of the daily storm (which freaked Tammy out. She’s a very nervous flyer). We got off the plane and headed over to the ME desk. That’s when I realized I had forgotten the ME boarding passes at home. No big deal though, they just printed off new ones for us there, and sent us on our way. Our bus was waiting, and we boarded quickly (around 7:00).

A half hour drive later and we pulled up to the Poly.

Check-in went smoothly, other than our Magic Bands were no where to be found. It turns out they were waiting for us at Kidani? I guess it kinda makes sense since we had originally booked at Kidani, but we changed that back in February when Poly bookings opened.
20150815_200757_HDR.jpg

Oh well. They gave us four magic bands (and had our colours available), and sent us off to our room.

Day 7 continued

Day 7 continued

After Everest we decided to head back to the hotel (it was just extremely hot again today). The kids went to the arcade while Tammy and I went to see if our bags had arrived from the Poly yet. They hadn’t, but were expected any minute. This gave us a chance to hang out in the lobby.

About 20 minutes after we arrived, our bags arrived. A CM from bell services brought our bags up to our room for us. Tammy and I relaxed for a few minutes while the kids were at the arcade. I also got a chance to take some room pictures.

Before long the kids were back and we were ready to head out for dinner.

Our destination tonight was Hollywood Studios for a stop at the 50’s Prime Time.

50’s is a favourite of ours, and it did not disappoint this time.

In fact, we had one of the best experiences we’ve ever had with our servers.

Day 7 continued

We were seated quickly after checking in (the place was just packed tonight). We ended up with two servers. There was Ana (who was new CM in training) and Elaine (who has been there for a while and was mentoring Ana). Both were just outstanding. Steph and Liam both wanted to “play along” with the whole family shtick, so they were doing things to be “bad” (elbows on the table, etc). I think the servers enjoyed having some people who they could have some fun with, and so they played it up a lot. Liam decided to order a milkshake (the PB&J one), and Steph got a cherry coke. Liam had his milkshake taken away by Ana for having his cellphone out at the table. She brought it back a few minutes later. He was also made to stand in the corner for having his elbows on the table, and everybody in the room had to point at him and say “shame, shame, shame”.
20150821_184849.jpg

Elaine then announced to the room that we were the “troublemaker” table. Ana then came over and sat with Liam to make sure “he behaved”.
20150821_185439.jpg

It was lots of fun. For dinner Tammy got Mom’s sampler,
20150821_185653.jpg

Steph and Liam got the Mac and Cheese with buffalo shrimp
20150821_185703.jpg

and I got the pot roast.
View attachment 110498
Dinner arrived quickly. However…Steph was trying to help Liam get the shrimps off the skewer, and ended up knocking her glass of Coke all over my lap (and broke her glass in the process). Man, we have really earned that “troublemaker” reputation. I start cleaning up the floor a bit with the napkins from the table, and then our servers came and cleaned up the rest. Elaine came by and took my pot roast away (since the glass broke near my plate she wouldn’t let me eat it. She was back a minute later with a new plate). All the meals were excellent. For dessert, Tammy got the Apple Crisp a la mode, I got the peanut butter layer cake (which is way too big for one person), and Liam got the brownie sundae.
20150821_192712.jpg

All were great. After they were done eating the kids asked if they could go wait outside since it was kind of cold in the restaurant. We said that was fine, so they headed out. Elaine came back and sat with us for a few minutes, asking where we were from, how old the kids were etc. It was nice to just sit and chat with her. She then said she was going to go find the kids and give them a hard time for leaving without saying goodbye, and then she left.

We paid the bill and headed out to find the kids. Now when Elaine said she was going to go find the kids, we thought she was kidding…she wasn’t….we come out the restaurant and there she is out front talking to the kids.
20150821_194053.jpg

She said the kids’ faces were hilarious when she came out and “yelled” at them for leaving without saying goodbye. What a great time we had. We got a picture of the kids with Elaine.
20150821_194130.jpg

We were about to leave, but decided to head back in to the 50’s for a minute to talk to the manager. We let the manager know the great experience we had with our servers and we filled out a guest comment card for both Ana and Elaine. It’s CM’s like that that make Disney such a great place.

After that we wandered the Studios for a while.

We did the standby line for Star Tours (had about a 10 minute wait) and then called it a night. We went back to the hotel, did a quick swim in the pool, and then headed to bed.

I couldn't imagine where you were going with the cat and pill story, but it did make me laugh out loud. :hilarious:
the CM had "giggle fits" for a while after (I turned around about a minute after we passed her and I could still see her shaking with laughter). It was funny.

Can you explain the girl laying on the floor, looking through the window, in your son's photo?

That's a poster in the single rider\fastpass line for Rock 'n Rollercoaster, not a window. Not sure who she is (the kids hasn't heard of her either)

Day 8 – Anniversary day

Happy August 22nd. Today is our 17th anniversary, and we are looking forward to enjoying the day at Disney. We took our time getting ready this morning. We slept in and then just hung around the room a bit (Steph found the show “Forensic Files” and was totally enthralled with it). We eventually got ready, had some coffee, and then headed out (with our anniversary buttons on of course).

We took the boat over to the MK, and arrived there around 10:45.

We had booked an early lunch reservation at BOG (10:50) so we headed straight to Fantasyland.
20150822_105852.jpg

We got to check-in around 10:50 (and waited behind people who were adamant they had lunch reservations today despite the fact they weren’t in the system and had no proof they had a reservation).
IMG_2934.JPG

Once that got cleared up we checked in and headed across the bridge to the Beast’s Castle.

I love the theming of the restaurant. We got inside, paid, and were given our "rose".

and then waited for our food to come.

Day 8 continued

We had pre-ordered lunch (3 French onion soups, two roast beef sandwiches and two grey stuff cupcakes).

The soup was great. I found the sandwich to be a bit fatty/stringy. It tasted good, but was a bit hard to eat. The cupcakes were great.

After lunch we all went on teacups.

I don’t go on with the kids because they will insist I spin them as fast as I can (which I would do, but then would feel sick the rest of the morning). Tammy and I went on our own cup and took it easy.

Day 8 continued

On the way out we went to Starbucks and got drinks.
20150822_121332.jpg

They were good. I also ran up to the Main Street train station and took a panorama of Main St USA (unfortunately, it's too big to upload here).

We took the boat back to the hotel, got changed, and headed down to the pool.
20150822_123535.jpg

It was a good time. We headed over to the pool area, and it was packed. We also passed a bunny on the way
20150822_124723.jpg

We found a few chairs together and sat down. Shortly after we got seated the people beside us decided to leave. There was a mom standing nearby who saw them getting up, so she came over and says she’s going to go grab her stuff and be right back. I decide I’d do her a favor and sit in the empty seat to hold her spot. However….she didn’t understand what I had done. She thought I was taking that spot. She comes back with her bags, looks at me sitting in the spot she had verbally claimed and says “That Sucks”. I’m at first confused about what sucks, then I realize she thinks I took the spot. I explained I was holding the spot for her. She was much happier about that.

We all swam for a bit, then I wandered around the pool area getting pictures.

The geyser was going off so I went and got some pictures of that. That geyser is so loud.

About an hour into the swim the kids decided they were bored, so they headed back to the room. Tammy and I hung around the pool area a bit longer. We went to the pool bar and got a couple of beverages and then sat and relaxed.
20150822_151632.jpg

A few minutes after we took our seats they announced the pool was closing (the afternoon storm was rolling in).

We headed back to the room to avoid getting soaked. We get back to the room and the kids decide they want to go to the arcade and play air hockey, so off they went. Tammy and I were really tired (I think the heat and the long days are just killing us), so we both took a nap.

Day 8 continue

The kids were back an hour later, and we got ready for dinner. Tonight was ‘Ohana (Tammy and I both rank this as our favourite restaurant on property). We got dressed and then headed down to the boat dock (I love being able to take the boat). We took the boat to the MK, and then the monorail to the Poly. We arrived at the check-in desk at 6:55. The guy behind the desk saw our buttons and asked how long we had been married. We told him 17 years. The guy looks at me and says “You are an old as dirt man who is way too old to be married to someone as young looking as your wife” (which is really funny since Tammy is actually older than me). She was happy to finally hear the “you don’t look old enough to be married 17 years” line.

a pre-dinner picture

We grab some seats in the lobby and hang around waiting. The kids were in a bit of a mood tonight, but I’m guessing it’s a combo of tired and hungry. It didn’t take long for our buzzer to go off and we were seated. Dinner was great. We started with the bread (when did they stop giving butter with it unless you ask?)
20150822_191521.jpg

and the salad (and when did they go back to the salad? I liked the lettuce wraps (although the salad was great too)).
20150822_192800.jpg

After that came all the sides and the skewers of meat.
20150822_192805.jpg
20150822_193255.jpg

All were delicious.

The bread pudding was after that (which was awesome as usual).
20150822_203012.jpg

They also brought Tammy and I an anniversary cupcake.

20150822_203001.jpg

Dinner was fantastic (and the kids were in much better moods with some food in their system - although I do see Liam planning out his next pinch))
20150822_200526.jpg

After dinner we left the Poly and hopped on the monorail. We decided to do a full loop (we really like the monorail) since I wanted to try and record the monorail spiel (the sound quality was terrible). After that we headed back to the hotel. We watched the Electrical Water Pageant from the dock which was fun (I think we’ve seen this around 5 times this trip now). After that we stopped by the store and the kids rented a movie (Return of the Jedi), and then headed back to the room. We put the movie on but I only made it to the scene where Yoda dies (yeah, it’s a spoiler, but there has to be some time limit on when you can call something a spoiler. It’s been almost 30 years people), before I was out. The plan is to go back to HS tomorrow.

End of day 8
