Changes to Spaceship Earth Descent.

I disagree...there's a BIG difference between simplifying words so international guests can understand better vs. having some speak to you like a third grade teacher.

Exactly. The current script is like talking to elementary school children.

Let's face it ... the current tourist wants to be on vacation: mentally and physically. They don't want to be enlightened or educated. That's why we have Nemo, Soar'n, Mission:Space, and Test Track--why we have a character spot instead of Communicore. Future World is lost. I'm sure it'd be too much to completely change Spaceship Earth into Mickey's Fun Ball, so Disney tried to emphasize the "fun" of the ride with interactive screens and a script that tries to be "hip" with the kids these days. Because they don't know things and we have to lower our expectations of what they're capable of understanding.

It's still a favorite ride of mine, mostly because a lot of it is still original ... so I listen to the previous version's soundtrack and try to ignore my surroundings on the descent.

That's too nice to it. It's below Elementary School, Elementary School kids should be more sophisticated than that unless standards have dropped severely over the last decade.

I don't thik they're trying to dumb EPCOT down or ruin FW on purpose. They just don't know what to do with it. And it's clear since M:S took Horizon's place, they really don't "get" EPCOT. Adding thrills and excitement could have been done very easily, without sacrificing the heart and soul of FW. tbh, even then, they did a very poor job of brining thrills and excitement to EPCOT.

The Dench line that makes me tear up with anger the quickest is:
"Remember how easy it was to learn your ABC’s? Thank the Phoenicians." :hurl:
I'm actually fine with that line. In fact, half of the script is just OK. The only bad thing it ever did was dumb down what was once a very serious attraction.

Here is an idea, as guests board, ask them on the touch screen a couple of IQ questions and play a specific spiel depending on their result.

What really happened to Epcot was that the Marketing people got too involved. When Walt was around, it was usually the creative minds that drove what and how the attractions were built and maintained. After he died, that stayed for a little while until those folks started to retire. As the new regime came in, it seems that everything became more based on business requirements rather then creative requirements. Now don't get me wrong, I am sure the business folks always had input and influence since day one. I think it just became more so as the head guy was less of a creative person and more of a business person (Think Michael Eisner vs Walt Disney). So attention to detail gets chewed up by attention to the dollar! That is what happened to EPCOT Center and ultimately SSE/Horizons/WOM/Imagination/Seas.

I would like to say thank you to all of you who recommended the Martin Video! The foirst time I got to ride SSE was in 2002.

I can Understand that change is needed on a ride devoted to communication and technology. Since the technologies depicted from the 1997 update can to fruition and beyond that expectation they should have been moved out; however, they still need to be mentioned as a generation's achievement. If that is the angle they arte going for showing each generations gift for the furture. The ride stops with the 1980s and Job/Gates garrage scene saying we are on a dawn of a new renisance. What about this generation? Plus what about a scene of the Mars rovers? What an accomplishment that was! Tech and communications. I admit after seeing prior incarnations of SSE the narration script has gone down hill! The decent just falls flat. I like the idea of showing a positive hopeful vision of the future not just a matrix of a never ending sea of stars.
Technology now exponetialy increase at a rate greater than at any other time in humankinds history why not make mention of this?

Perhaps a very timely find (both for Ray Bradbury's death, and the appropriateness of the dumbing down of Spaceship Earth's script discussion) Epcot Explorer on Twitter has linked to a recently posted copy of Ray Bradbury's original script of Spaceship Earth. Interesting stuff.

Reading now...

P.S.: I am struck by the similarities between the concept described on Pages 4-5 and several of the animation sequences produced for Ellen's Energy Adventure. Curiouser and curiouser...

This is incredible. So inspiring compared to what the attraction has now become. I believe it is important to make the ride accessible to guests of all ages and intellect, but there must be a way to retain the level of inspiration that Bradbury has embedded into this script. Simple and poetic can come hand-in-hand, it just takes a little more work (more work than a third grade history lesson plan).

These closing lines give me goosebumps:

Let us return to Spaceship
Let us revise the Book - the Walls!
Let us Gather - Record - Disseminate - Process
New Concepts from many lands and people.
Let us share their information about energy
Their understanding of The Land -
Their hopes for the Seas -
Their dreams for Tomorrow and Beyond.

An amazing read. It's worth noting this was the 1977 version of SSE too, the black dome without legs connected to the large show building behind it.

I don't want to throw fresh wood onto burning Rome (how's that for an analogy?), but the permit thread had a new permit yesterday for improvements to the SSE "ride envelope". Is that external stuff only? Or does that cover the descent?

more to come... as I said in my original post... good stuff soon.. :).... FINALLY SSE is getting what it deserves ;)
