Captain America 4

My theater had some occasional groans and most people stayed for the pointless post credit scene. There was some laughter at Agent Bat-Seraph's Yoda fight scene. Everyone walked out silent.

However, Ford and Mackie worked well together. They were fun to watch.
Hmmm my theater had a few cheers when a couple of characters showed up which I won’t divulge here

Not even close to 10th highest, is it?

well, per Google AI it actually would be 8th .... but perhaps I shouldn't just take AIs word for it or maybe they have some limitation on it - but this is what i looked at quick

Apparently it was AI acting weird. Not sure why the one paired with Google’s search engine seems so glitchy but I’ve had that happen too.

Found a table that shows the 3-day opening ranks 24th out of 35 MCU films. It shows Civil War was tenth largest opening weekend with $179M. Quantumania was number 19 with $106M. So below that, not a disaster but not inspiring confidence in the franchise’s $$$ direction.

The issue with that AI list is that it is not adjusted for inflation. Some of those movies are over a decade old, and the inflation adjustment is huge on them.

The result is Captain America: Brave New World is one of the weakest openings in MCU box office history.

Here's a list of the most recent Captain America compared to the top 5 movies on that list, but this time adjusted for inflation. It really shows the difference in the very modest opening weekend for Captain America compared to some of its most successful MCU predecessors.

Sorry Jen, This Isn't Transitory After All.jpg

Joanna Robinson and Dave Gonzalez, who wrote the book "MCU: The Rise of Marvel Studios” are saying it cost 380 million for Captain Falcon.
This has really just become pathetic, you're like a dog with a bone that won't let go. And now the number has changed again, so again I question the source. If you're so sure about the source why didn't you link to the place where they provided this tidbit of information.

But for a second lets say the budget is $350M+, I don't believe that but for the sake of argument, so what? How does that affect you? How does the affect the overall movie? How does that affect anything other than Disney's bottomline? If Disney wants to spend hundred of Millions on a movie, that is their right as a studio. Your only right as a moviegoer is to decide if you want to see it or not, and I know you have already decided you aren't going to see this one. So again I ask, how does this affect you? You've already decided you weren't going to see this one, so this has no impact on you whatsoever. And its not like Disney is going to stop making MCU movies, or even movies with Mackie in them as Cap. So what does it do other than to clog up these threads with misinformation and rants.

Back on the budget, I think what people have really gotten confused by is that its likely this talk about a $350M+ budget is really talking about budget+marketing costs, which that I can actually believe. And because it got lost in translation by a bad game of "telephone" it became just the budget and people ran with it. But again for our purposes in regards to talking about the profitability of the movie we use the published number, not the unverified rumors that could very well be made up or at the very least misunderstood.

Forbes:

  • Captain America: Brave New World - $88 million opening weekend
  • The Marvels - $46 million opening weekend
  • Eternals - $71 million opening weekend
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - $106 million opening weekend
  • Thor: The Dark World - $85 million opening weekend
  • Iron Man 2 - $128 million opening weekend
So, it’s right in that range, and nearly twice as good as the lowest-performing MCU movie ever, The Marvels, which went on to only earn $206 million worldwide. But how does it compare to say, other Captain America movies?

  • Captain America: The First Avenger - $65 million opening weekend, earned $370 million total
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $95 million opening, earned $714 million total
  • Captain America: Civil War - $179 million opening weekend, earned $1.1 billion total”

It also has a lot to do with certain sect of YouTubers For purposes of a grift narrative…. And then their followers who don’t fact check their statements take it as the headlines in the entertainment industry

This movie is not doing well and here is why. Note: You have to remember inflation (up) and the amount of people visiting the theaters today (down), so it is silly to compare movies from five to ten years ago.

The budget for this movie was not $180MM. They had at least two major re-shoots (which delayed this movie again and again) so I would almost double it. But lets say that is not important right now and just run the numbers for ticket prices and attendance.
  • Avg Ticket Prices:
    • 2014 - $8.17
    • 2022 - $10.53
    • 2024 - $15.17
For comparison, we will use Winter Soldier which made $95MM - TEN years ago for three day weekend (NA only) while Cap 4 made $88.5MM for a three day weekend (NA only). Simple math: $95MM / $8.17 = 11.6MM in attendance. For Cap 4 per Deadline, 5.8MM in attendance! This is not a movie people wanted and disservice to Anthony Mackie.

Disney (including Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and Variety), we see what you are doing here and please stop! The trades mags need to stop comparing pre-pandemic movies because it is not accurate. This is going to hurt merchandise sales as well.

Where did you get the 2024 number from?

As most sites I've seen have the average ticket price for 2023 and 2024 pretty much the same which is $10.78.

I love you man!

It's good to see another truthseeker.
This isn't some revolutionary take here, its been well known and very well documented and discussed in this very forum that overall ticket sales are down across the board, and have been in decline year-after-year since 2002 when it was at its heights.
