Book to big screen adaptations

I love Jane Austin adaptations - the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice (I actually have no desire to see the Keira Knightly version), Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion.

If the Keira Knightley version is ever on tv when you're bored, you should check it out. I was avidly against that movie until I watched it but it definitely surprised me. Plus, I like that I can get my P&P fix in less than four hours sometimes :)

I totally geeked out this January when PBS ran the Complete Jane Austen series

I have an English movie section in my collection that has those Jane Austin's, plus Howard's End, Remains of the Day, Enchanted April, and Miss Potter, (which is so completely wonderful) about Beatrix Potter. I love me some English movies. :D

I love the Pride and Prejudice version from 2005 with Kiera Knightley and The Devil Wears Prada. Two of my favorite books that I could read and watch over and over again.

In keeping with the Jane Austen theme, I was so disappointed in the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma. I couldn't wait to finish the book because I was so excited to see the movie. I thought it was silly and couldn't wait till it was over.

I have yet to see the Keira version, but I am skeptical that it can surpass the BBC/A&E miniseries with Colin Firth. That version is very faithful to the book. I did catch the Laurence Olivier version and they certainly took their liberties, like Lady Catherine being NICE :ROFLOL: but yeah.

I liked the Da Vinci Code adaptation and look forward to Angels and Demons.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head

I am very excited about The Giver finally being made into a movie. That was one of my favorites as a kid (and probably still is now!)

It is?!?! OMG that is awesome!

I read it with my 6th graders and they LOVED the book. I can't wait to tell some of them it's being turned into a movie.

On that same vein, I just finished reading the last of the trilogy, (I had already read Gathering Blue) Messenger, and wow! In a way it's better than The Giver :D

I want to check out the Keira version, and may do so at some point. But I'm still skeptical. But since I saw the Laurence Olivier version, I guess I could do the Keira version

The Jennifer Ehle/Colin Firth version is definitely a definitive version but when you don't have half a day to devote to watching it, the Keira Knightley version is quite nice. They didn't really take any liberties with it; it's true to the book, they just aren't nearly as in depth or detailed as the BBC version. I wasn't a Knightley fan at all either when I first watched it but I enjoyed her performance.

It's being directed by the current HP director too! (David Yates) That made me even happier!

I love the book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The movie was so so, some parts I really liked, and some parts I really didn't. That being said, I loved, absolutely loved, the BBC TV series of it. That is so worth getting on DVD.

Well that wasn't my intention  I just like what he did with the last movie and I'm glad a talented director is at the helm.

As for the post about Hitchhiker's Guide.. I completely agree. I love that book and the recent movie was quite disappointing.

Reading through these posts made me remember the Stephen books I actually have read (probably only three total). While I think Jack Nicholson was phenomenal in "The Shining," I thought the movie was quite different from the book. I remember the book really getting more into what "the shining" really was, whereas the movie was mainly about the "dull boy" going crazy. Still a sick movie, but just pretty different from the book and leaving some things out.

I used to be a big fan of his books and I cannot say that any of the movies ever did justice to the books that I read. The two best examples of that were "it" and "The Stand". Some of his short stories made decent movies, such as "The Body" which became "Stand by Me". It is interesting that you bring up "The Shining" because he supposedly hated that movie. I agree that it strayed way too far from the book.

Did you read "The Green Mile"? Did the movie stay rather close to it's storyline?

I did not. I was thinking about that one because that was a good movie. I probably read everything up until "Bag of Bones". In defense of the movies, no one can ever scare me like my own imagination. Therefore, it would be difficult to make a movie that truly measured up.

Sin City
The Notebook
LOTR trilogy

Looking forward to the I Love You, Beth Cooper film next year. Oh, and we need a Fahrenheit 451 remake, Sin City sequels, and Tietam Brown.

I did. Read it prior to seeing the movie. I thought the movie did a very good job of translating the novel.

I used to read him constantly, then got out of it and went in a different direction. I felt that The Stand was about as good an interpretation as could be done on a piece of work of the magnitude of the novel. It is mega-long, and has many different plot lines going on at once, and criss crossing each other.

I was dissappointed with Hearts in Atlantis. Dreamcatcher was alright. Never read Shawshannk, but the movie is great enough to where I don't care how close it was to the original story. Needful things was a pretty bad movie, regardless.

I would love if some very talented director/screenwriter team would take on The Dark Tower series for a theater release. Would also like to see The Talisman/Black House made into a great film.

I second the Fahrenheit remake... the first one was good, but it needs to be updated, much like they did with the Andromeda Strain this year... (it wasn't close to the book at all but a pretty good attempt to modernize it)

If you like the Shawshank movie you will love the book.

I believe they are working on making Dark Tower into a movie or TV series. Least that is what I heard a while back. Have you seen the Dark Tower comic books that are out?
