My reference in regards to 8 year olds was for the ride only, not the entire land. There are adult offerings- like the brewery that definitely isn't intended for 8 year olds.
This highlights one of the prime reasons that I truly hope the Avengers ride will be built, as Spiderman was designed within the confines of being a ride for all ages.

I'm lowering my expectations about the Spiderman ride but seeing how disappointing the Mario Kart ride is based from the POVs, I hope the interactiveness of Spiderman will be better since there is no AR.

Disneyland has always built experiences intended to be aspirational for children with lesser appeal for adults. The Autopia has little appeal to adults, but for children learning how to drive and having the experience of driving is something they'll never forget. This is my speculation- but for adults the spiderman ride should be a neat diversion and a much needed dark ride in DCA, while tapping into the imagination of the children riding.

There is something to be said for the enjoyment a parent gets watching their children have fun. With that said, I think they are going for an overall family friendly attraction here. A new dark ride is great for DCA even it’s not the kind of dark ride most of us asked for. If we count Soarin, DCA only has 6 dark rides... as in walking into a show building and getting on a moving vehicle. Fantasyland has as many dark rides as DCA. So Spider-Man is a welcome addition on that front. My issue with it, as with the Mario Kart ride, is just the lost potential for the IP. Mario Kart should be fast(ish). Spider-Man, we should be swinging through sky scrapers and fighting bad guys.

If Universal can put Revenge of the Mummy in New York City, Disney could have pulled off Marvel land in a city. Put it in San Francisco and call it a day for DCA.

Universal has improved, but I still don't believe they are renowned for top notch themeing. Well, aside from HP lands. The Mummy almost works, just as long as you don't think about it. But that is also a single attraction, not a land. Having Marvel's Cosmic Galaxy in the middle of Disney California Adventure wouldn't really fit. Then again, Disney has proven to be incredibly lazy with the potential of DCA and instead has treated it as a dumping ground.

mariokart does look dissapointing in videos for sure. I would really have thought they would have used the Duel GP tech for a much better experience

Very true. I wouldn't count Soarin' as a dark ride, personally. I see it as a theatre show like TTBAB (RIP) and Philharmagic. I think a darkride needs to take you through sets. I also wouldn't classify Mission BO as a darkride just as I wouldn't call Space Mountain a darkride. RSR, Monsters Inc, Midway Mania, Little Mermaid are the only 4 I would qualify as such. Its one of the reasons DCA didn't, and still, doesn't, appeal to many Disney fans.

Yeah my definition for a dark ride at DCA was very loose. I was just trying to illustrate how few places in DCA that we are indoors on a moving vehicle. By your definition (and probably the more universally accepted definition) I don’t know if we can even really count Midway Mania as a dark ride. Unless we re talking about the screens. Hahah

The conversation has shifted from IP v Non IP to IP done right v IP done wrong. No thrill ride in a 14 acre Star Wars Land? Mario Kart topping out at 5mph? Spider-Man ride in a warehouse chasing cute robots on the ground?

Yeah, Midway Mania is hard, but it does feature classic blacklight flats and show scenes. It just doesn't feature both at the same time. Or any figures. I think it barely squeaks by. Its sad, but Midway Mania currently is the best straight forward darkride the park has.

Really? Wouldn’t that honor go to Monsters Inc?

Not at all in my opinion. Monsters Inc is my least favourite of all Disney darkrides. Even Pooh. Well, maybe I do like it more than Buzz Lightyear. Okay, its right above Buzz Lightyear at the bottom for me.

Plus, we usually see 5 minute waits for Monsters Inc and 45-75 minute waits for Midway Mania. Midway Mania has been cloned twice and expanded upon once to meet demand. I think Midway Mania is more popular with guests than Monsters Inc.

I’m not a huge fan either but it’s definitely more of a traditional dark ride than TSMM. I thought that’s what you were going for when you said “straight forward.”

I meant straight forward as in not RSR as that the darkride portion is only one part of the experience. I mean, obviously RSR is miles better than Midway Mania and rest, but I don't think its fair.

As in straight forward I meant a fully enclosed experience where the attraction is made up of traveling through show scenes and set pieces in a ride vehicle and where most of the enjoyment comes as a result of the show elements rather than physical thrills. But then again, this my own personal highly subjective definition which I just concocted.

I think I’ll enjoy Spider-Man more just based off the fact that it won’t be such a tease even if the gameplay might be more exciting on Mario Kart

There would be a certain irony if the rides were sort of same-y after we've been ting on Spiderman for years and the Universal fanbase has been making Mario Kart out to be the second coming.

The expectations were certainly much higher for Mario Kart. I think Mario Kart will be better objectively it’s just how can you not be disappointed with how slow it’s going? Isn’t the point of building a Mario kart ride so you can feel like you are in the game? Not playing the game at home while someone pushes you around the house on an office chair.

I think that's it exactly.

When I imagine a proper Mario Kart attraction, what I don't expect is to have the only thing making me feel like I'm actually going fast be a pair of AR goggles that I must wear.

The items are required to make you feel like you’re in the game, and the only way to do that currently is with AR.
