Ha! We'll be recruited to be heroes. After all, how can an attraction be immersive and engaging for riders if they aren't actively being recruited?

Modern Imagineering, while often inept, isn't dumb. They understand that Marvel is basically a 100% character driven franchise with forgettable locations- which is a challenge they faced when designing both the land and attractions for it. I was told this was a huge reason why we didn't get the Avenger's E Ticket with the land's open- designing that thing was a beast for them. It's tough to make a ride focused around seeing and enjoying the characters, something every Imagineer ever has understood. Heck, the first pass at Snow White didn't even have Snow White! And the thrill of Mission BO isn't seeing the characters, it's the fun ride system and the great music.

And, they saw the many, many mistakes Galaxy's Edge made and actively tried to not make those. Which is promising, and makes me think the land might be a modest hit.
I am sooo tired of being called "recruit" or "cadet" or "trainee" when I go on a ride nowadays. I want to experience the ride not be part of it.

Nice, but recruiting storyline notwithstanding, I feel like I get to be Han Solo very nicely on MF:SR.

But wasn’t Avengers Campus’ design process all done by the time Galaxy’s Edge opened? How could they have known its opening would flop?

Unless AC was designed by a rival team of imagineers who already disagreed with GE’s approach long before it opened.

Can you imagine how tiring and phony that Pirates of the Caribbean would be if we were constantly bombarded by audio that told us we were Pirate Recruits! from the moment our boat slid out into the inky darkness of the bayou?

The very best Disneyland attractions don't ask much of us as an audience.

They simply play out a story and only ask that we enjoy the ride. And keep our hands inside the boat, of course.

Some things are fairly fluid even far into a land's development.

Two locations come to mind when thinking of great choices for a land to walk around: Asgard and Wakanda.

Not to mention the Sanctum Sanctorum would be an awesome place to explore. *gives stank eye again to M:BO theming* :D

However, none of those fit in Disney CALIFORNIA Adventure. So they needed a neutral template and this is what we got - a CA college campus vibe. I'd've preferred Stark mansion in Malibu maybe - if only for fun labs and a place to show off the Iron Man armor they used to have in Tomorrowland, but oh well... *shrug* Give me 20 Marvel characters here to meet and greet and a fun Spidey ride I can go on and I'm still a happy camp(us)er! :)

I would hate to be called "master" as I boarded my DoomBuggy on Haunted Mansion or "mountain climber" as I boarded my Matterhorn Bobsled.

Me too! I would have to correct them and let them know that I was a "foolish mortal" and "bobsled rider", respectively.
I would not even want to be called that by a cast member. The ghost host can say "foolish mortals" once in his intro and its fine but cast members saying it and the ghost host saying it over and over again would be stupid. that is why disney original imagineers didn't do dumb dumb crap like that.

No offense, but do people really care about this stuff?? I have never thought about it either way until I read this thread. When we go to the parks, no one in my family ever thinks that hard about any of it. It's just part of the theme. Being called something or not doesn't make the ride any more or less better obviously. The only time my kids responded to this was when Star Tours 2.0 opened and they wanted to be the spy onboard. And one of them finally did years later lol. But other than that I don't really care what they call us, I only care if the ride is fun.

But I know, it's the internet, people want to vent.

yes because it is something modern imagineering is insisting on putting in current E TICKETS that shows a lack of creativity and a flaw that they are trying to make guests part of the show instead of experiencing the show.

But these are already heavy based stories since they come from big IPs like Marvel and Star Wars, so I would expect it. Basically every major IP does this for decades now. Buzz Lightyear was the first one to be 'recruits' and that was over 20 years ago.

I get what you're saying, I just don't think its a big deal. Does it not make you not want to ride the ride? I don't know, maybe it doesn't lol. I just never really thought that hard about it since the point is to make you part of that world. That said, I don't care if they stopped doing it as well.

I think the “recruits” thing in Buzz works because of the character and because the whole thing is light and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The concept and program are not really that fluid. If anything program tends to be cut away, not added or completely changed. Trowbridge is also the creative lead for Disneyland Resort so he had some oversight of Avengers Campus. A lot of the mistakes are there. The land is mostly warehouses, so not exactly a pedestrian friendly environment and will rely on some staged tableaux. Live entertainment is also a major component and something that will always be at risk of being cut. It’s also opening without its headliner, what seems to be the most widely accepted mistake.

I can’t wait for the next panel where he confusingly asks the audience “do you guys not like warehouses?”

Do you think if and when the Avengers ride opens that they will go the extra mile and give it a proper facade? If that ginormous box with the Avengers logo is the best they can do then I’m glad it got canceled until someone else with higher standards comes along.

No I know its not just you I was responding to the board. I just responded to you because you were the last one to post about it. And I understand if others don't like it I just never saw it as a big deal personally. But OK if others do. I just never even thought about it until I read this thread.

It’s overseen by the guy who couldn’t get the Mark VII to fit back onto the beam and gave us the TRON and Guardians of the Galaxy boxes, so I don’t have high hopes.
