AVATAR progress

Major investment in the parks always seem to lag everything else. I guess that is because if a movie fails they just move on to the next one. Theme park investments ideally are designed to last decades.

The economy no longer allows for something like EPCOT Center to be built in the US. Content has to be proven and established. I know many complain about this state of affairs but it is the new reality for publicly owned companies. But if projects on the scale of Carsland, Potterland and Pandora are the future, I think that works.

They could have waited like Universal did with Potter 2.0 half built. Disney decided to announce Pandora earlier than usual. That just gave the fan community a chance to offer input endlessly argue about it. I see it as a positive.

Fixed that for you. :)

Yes, projects of this scale are always being refined but it is obvious they are moving towards a ground-breaking later this year as was announced from nearly the beginning.

Some here can't grasp that Disney had other projects in the queue (before Pandora) and continue to move deliberately forward but at their own pace. I love that they do not react to the demands of the uninformed. They just move forward and ignore their silly critics.
Dude.... This has been one big mess from start to finish. It's clutching at straws and incompetence beyond belief. I can't be too more specific but it makes FLE seem like it went perfectly to plan.

What we are seeing occur here are hints of a behind the scenes food fight. Nothing more. Take everything you hear with a grain of salt. Just some food for thought. Something is cooking. Even those that said Pandora would never get done have taken that off the menu of possibilities.

If I had to guess, I would guess that much of the engineering is occurring outside of WDI's sphere of influence and Lightstorm and Cameron are mostly running the kitchen for this project. If not that, something else is driving folks nuts.

For some reason I am now craving waffles... ;) And no, there is a good example, though I wouldn't say that was all just Disney deciding "let's rethink this." That was at least in part due to fan outcry that things were so princess oriented and they weren't replacing the attraction they were taking out, the idiots. But 7 years is pathetic. It shouldn't take that long, shouldn't need to take that long, and it's really a testament to how poorly (ie bureaucratic nonsense) the development division can be run.
The Magic Kingdom took 12 years and that was nowhere near the regulatory environment we live in today. It's not a perfect example obviously but this timeline is nothing new. I'm not claiming to be an expert but if anyone IS an expert, it's TWDC. I'll defer to their judgment on project timelines over yours or mine.

In on-topic news, Avatar attractions are now in the prototype phase. Plans are still very much subject to change depending on the results of the prototype testing.

It was much more than a food fight.

Please... I know what to believe and what not to. And it's not what you've read here.

Edit... I'm not trying to brag. Just to hint at what a mess this whole project has been upto now.

12 years... But that's for a full park. We are only talking about a land at most.

There's nothing officially CALLED prototype phase. I just meant they're building and ordering prototypes of their designs. Some stuff looks great on blueprints but you need to know you can physically make it work.

The "official" name for the "prototype" phase would simply be R&D (Research and Development). It is not a "phase", just Research and Development.

Sometimes the creative process is 'messy'. And that can be a positive thing. Ultimately it still has to pass by Lasseter and Iger. I think they have earned a bit of trust by now. They are transforming TWDC division by division.

Which means to me this is a time for constructive ideas here. Rather than just the usual negativity many provide. If someone thinks it is broken, they should say how you would like it fixed.

I'll be here to critique any ideas. :D

Would this mean they have an idea what they are doing and are now testing to make sure its possible?

is this hinting at Disney getting Lord of the Rings rights!?

They have Star Wars and Marvel. That likely makes LOTR a non-issue for them. I doubt it was ever seriously considered as it would be extremely expensive to do right. But never say never I guess.
