I am with the group of people that basically said they can't even believe this is a question. The answer is Star Wars.

I have seen Avatar, in imax 3d , Own it on blue ray, even have a 3-d television. I also own the Star Wars series.

But seriously folks, there is no comparison. Name one line from Avatar? Now how about Star Wars.

"Let the be force be with you"
"Use the force"
"Let the Wookie Win"
"Help us Obi-One Kanobi" you are our only hope"

I have not watched the original star wars in 20 years, and still remember these lines.

More importantly from a merchandising perspective. There is no comparison.

Oh yeah one small thing, Disney paid 4 billion for Lucas Files, they own the franchise.

Point taken?
Avatar fans are better dressers and own color cameras?

Thanks for the many responses!

The poll's been open for less than 1 day and the response, by a 7-to-1 vote so far, is for stopping Avatar Land and moving forward with Star Wars Land.

Disney must be aware of Star Wars popularity. They must be aware that a Star Wars Land at WDW would be a huge hit, a possible Potter Swatter. Why aren't they stopping? Possibilities include:
  1. They actually think Avatar is more popular than Star Wars.
  2. Momentum is difficult to overcome in large corporations. They've put a lot of effort into Avatar and there's too much momentum to change course.
  3. They have a contract with James Cameron that would cost millions if they tried to pull out.
  4. They believe Avatar in DAK is needed more than Star Wars in DHS.
  5. They believe Star Wars would take too long to develop. Avatar is needed sooner to counteract WWOHP2.
  6. They've already made exclusivity deals to open Star Wars in Disney's Far East parks.
  7. People's egos/reputations are on the line. Changing courses would mean acknowledging Avatar was a mistake.
What do you think is the reason?

8. They have no interest in changing. Avatar is in the works for DAK, and Star Wars will eventually come to DHS.

This is the reason I didn't vote in this poll, because the situation (choosing between Star Wars and Avatar) is purely hypothetical, since Disney can build both if they really want to. I think a better question is, why move forward with Carsland instead of building Star Wars land?

Moving forward (if it happens) with Carsland is an easy decision for TDO. 1) It's already proven to be wildly successful at DLR, more popular than anything Disney has done this century, 2) TDO is cheap; going with a dummed down version of Carsland will cost a lot less than any Star Wars development. It's for these reasons that I did not compare Star Wars and Carsland. TDO has little reason to pick Star Wars over Carsland. Avatar, well, the poll shows most would rejoice if Avatar was replaced with Star Wars.

Given Disney's slower than molasses pace over the last decade, if Carsland moves forward at DHS, there's an excellent chance there won't be a Star Wars Land at WDW in my lifetime.:(

At least my kids and grandkids will get to see it.

Star Wars is a cultural phenomenon while Avatar is Ferngully in 3D. There's absolutely no comparison between the two. And as for how much money Avatar made...adjust for inflation (or go by total number of tickets sold) and get back with me.

Star Wars land would be infinately more successful! People would go just to see it. Avatar should be stopped and instead Beastly Kingdom should be built. Then expand MGM to have Star Wars land and Cars Land both. BOOM!

Avatar falls out of the top 10.

.. and figure in merchandise sales just for Star Wars: A New Hope and Avatar's revenue is pocket change by comparisson. :)

Both please. I love SW. Huge part of my childhood. An entire land in DHS would be awesome. Avatar is not as strong a franchise, but would make an awesome and very pretty theme park land that would be well received. If Disney could get both done within 5 years.....I'd be totally shocked. Right now the bigger questions are - will they go ahead with Avatar and is anything big going to be announced for DHS (SW or Pixar expansion).

It's as simple as this ...

Scenario A
"Hey family, let's plan a trip to Disney World, I can't wait to experience Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, see Peter Pan, meet Mickey, oh and there's a new Avatar land, it might be cool to fly on one of those dragon things, right?"

Scenario B
"We have to go to the new STAR WARS land, I want to see Bespin, I want to walk through the Falcon, I want to ride a Speeder ... this is like my wildest dreams!! It's at Disney World."

Star Wars is a motivating driving force. Avatar could be a nice piece to the overall puzzle, providing that puzzle isn't still missing pieces when it's completed.

These people would beg to differ.

Noooooooo. Twilight land would officially end my trips to whatever park builds it. I couldn't do it. I would instantly fall asleep when I walked into the land probably injuring myself. I have tried to watch a few of the movies and never got past 20mins without snoozing out.

Or Scenario C:

"Star Wars"? Isn't that that old movie from way back in 2005 with Jar Jar Binks in it?
