AVATAR land - the specifics

I might be wrong, but i think the night time lighting on the floating mountains is the projection mapping?

This leads me to believe they had planned something more:
It was, and this is far from rumor. Two main entertainment offerings (sort of three) are planned. Night "show" on the mountains, which is more of a sequence than a show. The drum circle bit. Also, some of the things the nightlife will do that interacts with both the mountains and drums could almost be considered a show.

Yeah there were several rumors of some sort of nighttime lighting ceremony. My guess is the early issues with some of the nighttime lighting and overall crowds played a role into that not happening.

While not the intended product, what we have today is the practically finished product. A lot of the interplant interaction either wasn't working as intended, cut, or abused before the public could see it. As for the drums, it does interact, as whenever a specific drum is hit, a glowing "seed" shoots out of a nearby "root". Finally for the mountains, this was honestly a miscommunication. I was told (and I quote) "There will be a projection sequence on the mountains" which I took to mean a sequence of animals and vibrant flourishes, when instead it was subtle flourished of color across the mountains.

I still think there needs to be some lighting upgrades and addition to pandora at night.

I agree since they didn't get to do what they had hoped to do. But, if they used up their budget, they used up their budget. If there's going to be an upgrade or and insistence to enact what was planned, I would imagine that it would have to be Cameron who's going to have to be the one to get that ball rolling.

I would imagine James Cameron is long gone from this whole project and Disney. He came in, gave his input, collected his massive paycheck and moved on with his life.

During the better part of the last decade Cameron has stated that Avatar is his biggest project. He conceived it at age 17 and shaped it over many years, waiting for the right technology to exist to help realise his dream. I find it hard to believe that creating his vision in the real, physical world would be nothing more than collecting a paycheck o_O

And you can bet with 4 sequels planned, he'll want more out of the land.

My quick review:

You'll get out of Pandora what you put into in. Pop in and ride the rides and crane your neck up at the mountains and I can't believe anyone wouldn't at least walk out pleased.

But if you should stop and smell the space roses...

Those who bemoan the loss of Epcot Center's spirit should find it alive and well here. The place is ambitious- an engineering marvel that manages to never feel like one. There is a message and moral permeating everything, but it's subtle and devoid of any commercialism (this really is Pandora pure and simple, and in no way feels like it exists to ride off the success of the first film or hype up the sequels.) Stand in the valley between the floating mountains and the cascading waterfalls and you are treated to an intergalactic Eden and the most beautifully crafted vista I've ever seen in a theme park.

Some have commented on the lack of a 'big reveal' and that's true. This place is very much about the slow reveal, but I hardly see that as a negative because the reveals never stop. Look up, look down, look everywhere, touch everything. Each corner turned is not only a new reveal, but another wow moment and another photo that just has to be taken (and having taken hundreds of photos, I can sadly say that none of them really capture it.)

Pandora was a must do, and a big part of why after such a long absence I returned to Orlando. We got there early enough to have only a dozen or so ahead of us. We were let into the land early, went straight to Flight of Passage, rushing by the gorgeously unique landscape. Quickly on, quickly off, then fighting through the teeming thousands to get to the River Journey. Again, quickly on and off, then out of the land to avoid the chaos. I enjoyed what I saw, but it was all such a blur. We went back later for lunch and managed to walk around a bit before a second ride on River Journey with fastpass. I was impressed and happy, but still felt I hadn't had the full experience.

I was able to return by myself on another day and wait out a two hour line for "Flight of Passage." And I'm glad I did. Two hours and I could have spent longer- made evident by how many people I let pass me in line so I could soak it all in or take some more pictures. The line actually gives you the best view of the valley as a whole, and also provides an amazing build up for what's to come. If like me, this ride was a must do on your trip, then by all means try for a fastpass or get there early (7:30 a.m.) so that you're certain of at least one ride. But go back and take your time. Don't be daunted by the long wait because it's worth it.

Sorry, my quick review turned out not so quick. I have more to say and while it may be glowing overall, I do have criticisms. Lots to say about Pandora, Epcot, the rest of WDW, fastpass, Universal, Harry Potter, and an idea for a hotel that I think would be right up the alley of many on here. Great to have finally made it back to the parks. Thanks again to all who contribute here to make those long gaps more tolerable.
