AVATAR land - the specifics

Does your analysis change if one views the River Journey as a story-less attraction?

I should say story AND/OR mood, since many compelling rides are far more about the latter than the former. HM, for instance, suffered when they tried to emphasize a clear storyline in the Phantom Manor version.

That said, I'd still question whether the Shaman's dramatic, showy movements are of a piece with the calm, contemplative nature of the rest of the ride.

If I have the story right, the land is based around a former RDA facility that's been taken over by Alpha Centauri Expeditions, so it wouldn't be that close to a Na'vi encampment. Don't those things live up in trees anyway?

depends on the clan. in the movie they show different clans living in different conditions, from caves to simple teepees.

thats racist!

In fairness, this stuff is based on a movie that featured scenes like this.

If you're 14 and go to six flags a lot, and you hear that Disney is building rides based on a sci-fi action blockbuster where the main character totes around a machine gun like Rambo, what are your expectations going to be?
But thats like.. only the finale and the intro parts.. :|

One might be tempted to say that it looks like Disney has decided to cut its losses with Avatar.

We know the two E-tickets were downsized to an E and a C, and that the E is less "ambitious" than most of the other E's that Disney has opened at other resorts in the last five years, especially in Asia. (Or was the original plan for three attractions?)

The previous talk about having walk-around characters, more interactive plants and trails, more groundbreaking nighttime tech...

Plus the fact they've jettisoned plans to build Avatar at other resorts...

All of that - plus some of the other critiques -- suggests Disney on some level phoned this in and decided to do the minimum, maybe the minimum that James Cameron would approve.
Probably they just shelved Avatar in the ranking list with Starwars reaching #1 spot and Marvel #2.
Will probably have a "lets see how the next movies fare before an expansion"

Phantom Manor's story works very well... Never has there been such an epic tie-in as seen in Frontierland as DLP's Frontierland for the story is unrivaled, and really it's easily the best Magic Kingdom "Land" ever.
Compare it to the Haunted Mansion, and as a whole it is not as good, but I guarantee you that if they used an original layout it could have been that much better.

Cast Previews begin today on a big scale, so we should hear lots more views and opinions from those who have been inside. Of course, DAK workers may not be totally unbiased, but we'll get more opinions.
Well there will also be friends on the CMs in this round of previews, so we can hopefully hear from some who are not employed by Disney who can give an open opinion.

Great, you're doing ad hominem, too, just more subtly than others.

Bloggers opinion can't be trusted, even the ones who write critical things, so, it's OK to question their opinions or their ethics implying they're being paid to write nice things.

CMs opinions can't be trusted, even though so many of our angriest people at Disney here are ex-CMs.

But you're going to trust friends of CMs? What do they know, they're only tourists!!!

Who is this ideal person whose opinion can be trusted to be inviolate? Some bitter hater who only begrudges something isn't totally horrible?

How about someone who goes to the parks all the time? Nope, they're lifestylers. Someone who is happy with their dealings with Disney? Nope... pixie dusters.

And if you disagree with me, then there must be something wrong with you and I will call you a name to show that your opinion is worthless!

These forums are ridiculous with, at best, a dismissal, and at worst, a personal attack, to discount people whose opinions one may disagree with.

I don't really understand your issue, but I was pointing out that we are now entering the phase where we will have more open dialog about the new land from those with no vested interest.

I'm not attempting to identify a single person who can be trusted. I'm interested in hearing a variety of comments all kinds of people - tourists, CMs, those who worked on it - the more the merrier.

I don't want to bog this thread down with this type of conversation, but feel free to message me with where I have dismissed people's opinions as worthless or resorted to a personal attack.

Apologies folks for the interruption, please carry on.

I fear that FoP capacity is closer to 1300-1500. I'm gonna check back in my notes tonight.

It has to be closer to 2000. I just don't see them going with anything less.

So reports indicate that the ride lasts 4.5 minutes, roughly. I'm guessing it can't take less than two minutes to unload and load a 48-rider theater. If my calculations are correct, at max operation, the attraction could maybe pull through 1,800 guests per hour at the most. If the ride is a tad shorter or if unload/load doesn't take as long, maybe more.

So I'm led to believe that both attractions together have about the same as Pirates? There's no way. You guys are under estimating.

What makes you assume the estimates are off?
Disney clearly anticipates that demand for these rides will far outsrip capacity as evidenced by their massive queues.
