AVATAR land - the specifics

Andrew C

You know what's funny?
From Theme Park Review who attended the media preview on Apr 29...

The rides were both great. Full disclosure: I am not a fan of media-based attractions, but the "Flight of Passage" (Banshee ride) was amazing! For those of you who find Soarin' too tame and wished it was more thrilling, this ride is for you! It's like a combination of the giant screen of Soarin' with the mild short drops of Tower of Terror that actually give you that "airtime" feeling in your stomach. When you look behind you and watch the ride vehicle you can see it moves quite a bit and jumps quite far and at a good pace. And them added fact that you can feel your Banshee "breathing" or heart beating or whatever is also a ridiculous attention to detail. I absolutely LOVED this ride!

That's promising.

This board is the best!!! The anxiety level people have regarding whether this ride/land will be any good is through the roof.
The land is barely open in B mode and that is being generous and we have 10 pages on why this land already sucks.

There should be a new Disney fan slogan , "THE NEW RIDE SUCKS TILL PROVEN OTHERWISE"

LOL!!! Good stuff... True Disney Fans!!!

More like, "THE NEW RIDE SUCKS TILL PROVEN OTHERWISE- THEN IF PROVEN, HERE'S HOW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER ANYWAY."

This thread has me rethinking my theory of general negativity as expressed on these forums. "Haters gonna hate" just doesn't cover it anymore. I think "Haters wanna hate," is more fitting.

It's good and healthy to be a fan and disapprove of many things pertaining to the thing you love. But if you are a fan, shouldn't you at least start out from a place that's at least somewhat positive and go from there?

More and more it seems like a thread need only start with, "today Disney announced..." and a good half of this forum is already riled up and typing their objective rants.

It's much different creating an environment that you move slowly through vs creating an environment that not only do you move quickly through but also have to make it look like you've traveled a long distance.... the best and most effective way to do this is through the use of a simulator attraction

It wouldn't have been impossible to create a coaster that maintains a high speed yet provides consistently high-quality visuals that match the imagery of the movie. It just would have been really, really expensive. Imagine having to build like four Big Thunder Mountains at the same time.

Universal Studios has 3 simulators, IoA has none. Epcot has 2 and, in a few years, MGM will have 2, both tied to the same IP. In fact, Fallon is the first simulator Universal has built since BttF in '91 - they just keep changing the IP in the 2 they had.

I personally count the hybrids in the running total. That's the unidentifiable we have done this ride four times today feeling. Whether people agree, that's my personal issue, not the media. I agree that 2 sims is about quota, preferably one is hybrid.

Like I said this is AK's first, it rounds out the menu. A coaster technically doesn't.

But those are great coasters.

It's almost like people have been paying attention to Disney's track record and continuing management philosophies over the last 15 years and consider developments in that context.

Yes you can create a highly themed coaster, but it wouldn't have the sane impact that this ride does through the landscape of Pandora, interacting with the flora and fauna like a simulator is able to.... this ride leaves an impact on you that you've really connected to the world of Pandora that a coaster wouldn't have allowed... when you ride it you'll see what I'm talking about :)

Those views are great. From the front seat. What about everyone else on the train who can only see out of one side? I love coasters, but I don't think they truly simulate flight in the immersive way this simulator appears to.

If I can see the roller coaster track then I am not on a Banshee.
If I can see the roller coaster track then I am not linked to a Banshee.
There are no metal supports or tracks on Pandora.

"Haters gonna hate"??, lol..... You forgot to say, "show me the money", and "you go girl". Oh wait, was your post about overused, washed up phrases? Or just complaining about the complainers?

There are always drawbacks with any ride system.
To my way of thinking, the actual sensation of speed and G-forces provided by a moving ride vehicle are more important and outweigh the advantages of the simulator screen.

As for the field of view, just use a single car system like on the Gerstlauer eurofighters and infinity series.

If I can still see the front of my telepathy pod then you I am not on a banshee.
If I can still see my girlfriend on the pod next to me then I am not on a banshee.
The avatar body they beam me to shouldn't have my skin color and somehow be wearing the same wristwatch that I wore to the park.
Illusion blown.
