A couple of days ago I was having a discussion with a co-worker about WDW's resorts. I was saying that we usually stay at the WL or GF almost always with an AP discount. She has stayed at AS and PORS and suggested my wife, 1 y/o son, and I stay there. I replied that we like to stay at the deluxe MK resorts because of the extras and conviniences to which she replied that I'm a "Deluxe snob". She said this in all seriousness. I'm a pretty down to earth guy who's been going to WDW since I was about 5, we didn't ever stay on property until the late 80's and only then at the Disney Village, then later at dixie landings and some others. I worked my butt of in medical school and residency so I could provide my family with a comfortable living and now I'm labled a snob becuase we like to stay at nice hotels. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I'm the opposite. I'm a Pop snob. I love the resort. I love actually having a 10 minute drive to and from the park where the family can get a little nap. It's the only quiet time I get on trips. I could afford to stay somewhere more, but just can't make myself do it. I could have 3 nights at GF or 9 at POP w/Dining plan.

The thing that really is weird to me is the MODS?!?!?!?!

What's up with that? An expensive, unthemed resturaunt that isn't anywhere near as good as any of the places in Deluxe or Parks? It's like paying double for an extra 5 inches on your table in your room and a slide in the pool. Why not take one nights of that extra money and spend it on PLUS to get the water parks too?

The thing that is weird to me is that most deluxe have EXTERIOR BUILDINGS that you have to go to anyways. It might as well be the Value at that point. At least GF doesn't have this issue. That place is all class. And I have no problem getting up in the morning and going there for breakfast. Then using the boat dock. Then going back to POP for a bigger food court for Lunch.

Am I the only one who could care less about the resorts restaurants, excluding food courts? The fact is, there are many people, like myself, who think the value reosrts are overcrowded with kids and slightly childish decor, and while we would like to stay in a deluxe, we simply cannot afford the $1000 or so more for the week. When I priced my trip out for next December, it was only $300 more for the week to stay at a moderate compared to a value...and to people like me and my DH, who aren't parents and like more adult decor, that is not that much of a difference!

She had a lot of nerve saying that. She sounds like a reverse snob, which is not what staying at WDW is all about.

I know families who stay at Value resorts. I know people who've stayed at Moderates. One family we know always stays at the Floridian on the concierge level. Whatever floats your boat is the way to go as long as everybody has a great time and you don't sink yourself into debt.

The theming at each resort is so unique that people are bound to pick a favorite and, whichever it is, that's where you should stay.

We're not the "out by 7:00AM, in the parks until 11:00PM" type family. We like to come back and relax at night, enjoy the pool, or walk around the resort. Our DVC home resort, the Boardwalk, works for us. This past August, we stayed for 3 nights at AKL and enjoyed the Kilamangaro Club. It cost us a ton of points, but was worth every one. Does that make us snobs because we chose to indulge in a luxury? I don't think so. We saved up the points and "spent" them as we saw fit.

You're not a snob for taking the vacation you've worked hard for and want to enjoy.

We won't consider staying anywhere but a deluxe resort. Our first was the Contemporary our second was the Grand Floridian.
2007 we will stay at the Yacht Club and the Polynesian. I won't apologize for it, I work very hard and when I'm vacation, I'm really on vacation. I'm not rich or one who tries to pretend to be. Whomever would call you a snob is just jealous and probably spends their money on other frivolities they won't mention.

My husband and I are both deluxe "snobs" and feel no shame!! For that matter, we're hotel "snobs" in general. One of our favorite parts of any trip is spending time at the hotels. I have to disagree with those who say it's just a bed for sleeping (maybe for them, but not for us). We don't spend all day in the parks, so having good restaurants/pools/amenities is of MAJOR importance to us!

There is nothing wrong with spending your hard earned money on a deluxe hotel. Everybody is different - some like to camp, some just need a place to put their head at night and some like to be pampered (like us) on vacation. To each his own. Don't let that lady get under your skin - it sounds like she needs a lesson in manners.

My parents are both physicians and if anyone asks them or insults them for staying only at the deluxe resorts, they just nicely reply with the lines that they worked very hard through many years of school to be able to do this. They're really nice people and it's just something we've done ever since I was a child. It's nothing about being a snob in my opinion, it's a personal choice. Some people see it as a vacation therefore they should splurge if it can be afforded, while others may see it as an expensive extra, where cost and expenditures should be watched closely. It's got nothing to do with who's the better person.

The one thing I've to say though is that since I've been raised in a 'deluxe' style of vacation to Disney World every year since I was born, I've taught myself that I will strive for nothing less for myself and my family, once I have a family that is. I'm a freshman in college and I've set my goals high, because I know it will pay off in the future. The truth of it is I'm actually working for a mechanical engineering degree so I can work for Disney, somewhat of a lifetime vacation you could say! I think the overall ordeal is a matter of personal choice and situation, not of one person being a 'snob', just because they live a different life.

Just my 2 cents.

No, those who prefer Deluxe resorts are not (necessarily) snobs.

We've stayed in All-Stars, Carribean, Wilderness Lodge, Contemporary and Grand Floridian. And yes, the GF is the best. But we like the Wilderness Lodge a whole lot.

And we always have a good time when we stay at the All-Stars too.

It is difficult not to have a good time when staying on Disney property.

We stay where we can afford, from year to year. And we have fun!

Being a snob requires something more...

...than the simple action of staying at a nice hotel. My guess is she interpreted your response to mean you wouldn't consider anywhere else which isn't true I gather, if the amenities were on par. Having the monorail is a GODSEND when you have young children.

It's all about preferences. Having more money means being able to indulge your preferences. I travel ALOT staying at Marriott's, Westin's, and Hyatt's so on vacation I want something better or dramatically different. My parents go to WDW all the time and prefer the All Star hotels, despite their ability to afford much more, because of the young families.

When I was in high school we stayed at the GF for a week (one room for the parents, one for the kids) then a week in our motorhome at Fort Wilderness. Why? Because we kids LOVED Fort Wilderness. It was Mom who forced us to stay at the GF. For next year my own kids have chosen camping over staying at Disney resort. FTW is the BEST place to stay for any and all kids.

If any of this makes me a snob, welcome to the club :sohappy:

We figure that for the amount of money it costs to stay at a Deluxe resort for 1 week, we can stay at an All Star for a longer period of time. Maybe the Resorts are not as "nice", but it is still DISNEY.

The first time me and my gf (Iluvstitch) went to WDW in July we stayed at the CBR. I loved it but didn't know any better, we went back to the CBR the next year for our May trip. The next time (May 04) we decided to treat ourselves to the Poly, it was awesome and we loved it, went back again for Xmas of 04, May of 05 we went to the AKL/Poly Halloween 05 we stayed at the AKL, and in May of this year we stayed back at the Poly. We're gonna go on the Magic for Halloween but we're staying at the Beach Club for 2 days while we go to MNSSHP.

I'd say I've become a deluxe snob. :)
