A couple of days ago I was having a discussion with a co-worker about WDW's resorts. I was saying that we usually stay at the WL or GF almost always with an AP discount. She has stayed at AS and PORS and suggested my wife, 1 y/o son, and I stay there. I replied that we like to stay at the deluxe MK resorts because of the extras and conviniences to which she replied that I'm a "Deluxe snob". She said this in all seriousness. I'm a pretty down to earth guy who's been going to WDW since I was about 5, we didn't ever stay on property until the late 80's and only then at the Disney Village, then later at dixie landings and some others. I worked my butt of in medical school and residency so I could provide my family with a comfortable living and now I'm labled a snob becuase we like to stay at nice hotels. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I have stayed at the Poly, ASM, Carib.beach and POR I love the Poly but to be honest we also love POR just as much when tou have children the food court can't be beat most kids would rather eat there than expensive places all the time, but who cares what people sya do what makes YOU happy:p

We're hoping to stay at the Grand Floridian for Christmas 2007. We already have our seersucker suits to wear to dinner at Victoria and Alberts.

My wife and I dined at Victoria and Alberts when we became engaged at the GF 5 years ago, it is still one of the most memorable evenings of our lives. We still have the personalized menus from there and we plan to go back next June to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. Have wonderful time, it is an experience unlike any other at Disney.

ps. Say hi to Victoria and Albert for us;)

Don't worry about the how this person is labeling you. You can afford to stay at the Deluxe resorts and they do have a lot to offer its guests... such as monorail access to the MK and Epcot and peace & quiet after a long day at the parks.
I stayed at the Contemporary as a child and loved it. Now this December my wife and I will be staying at a deluxe for the first time and we are looking forward to it with excitement. Before today, we've stayed at moderate and value resorts since our youthful finances really didn't allow us to go deluxe for a week at a time.

Every now and then we will live it up and go high class, but not on a regular basis. Its fun and we enjoy rubbing elbows with upper class society.

So enjoy your vacation and the immersive environment Disney provides you.

To us, when we go to Disney we like to be immersed in the who Disney experience and that includes their resorts. Not to offend anyone but to those who talk about only staying in a room to sleep and therefore stay at the values or moderates, have you stayed at a deluxe? Having the patio door open and hearing the wolf's howl from the Haunted Mansion or seeing the fireworks from our balcony at the GF, or taking a afternoon nap or swim and watching the water pagent from the beach at the WL and occaisonally enjoying a nice meal at the California Grill are just as important to us as getting on rides at the parks. We've been there enough times to not have to rush and take everything at a little easier pace. Plus having a 1 y/o it's niece to slow down and smell the roses as it were -- a couple hours at the park, then back to the room for a swim/nap or a boat rental, then back to the parks for the evening. Additionally, the free crib, fridge, and more convenient transportation at the deluxes are big advantages (we've been staying at the GF more than the WL after having our son becuase it has a monorail and is way easier to get on with a stroller than the boat). Also, to whomever said the rooms all look the same with the lights out (paraphrasing), it's pretty hard to beat waking up a 2:00am and looking out your patio window and seeing the castle:snore:
Very well stated.

Like the parks there is so much more than just the rides and that element is lost on some. The deluxe resorts are the pinnacle of the complete Disney escape.

But each person has their own priorities especially when it comes to money. Some won't hesitate to spend $200 on a fantastic 5 star dinner while others cringe when they get the bill at TGI Friday's.

To each is own and no one should be judged on how they spend their entertainment dollar.

Christmas 2007 will be our 20 year anniversary! Even if we don't end up staying at the GF, we WILL eat at V and A. And yes, we'll be glad to give them your regards!

Sounds to me like they might be a little jelious.

It's all in what you like. The first year we stayed at the All Star Music, and yes it was nice, but my wife thought the rooms were smaller, and the resort was further away from things. For the second we were originally going to upgrade to a moderate, but end up becoming DVC members, at the Beach Club Villa's which we have done twice and loved it.

In fact this year we are using our points to do AKL Savannah View room, and the kids are actually disappointed that we are not going to BCV, this year. So what I am trying to say is it's what you like, and to heck with others. As long as you and your family enjoy it that's all that is important.

You are a "snob" in a sense because you do what you enjoy and do it over and over again. I'm sure I will enjoy the AKL but we really enjoy BCV so I would classify myself as a BCV snob.

I'm sure like other people on the boards I have stayed at almost every Disney Resort. (except for Boardwalk, Shades of Green, and Coronado Springs)

Having gone in just about every "family" situation, as the kid, as the boyfriend with girlfriends family, with just girlfriend, with co-workers etc... I have found everyone seems to find certain things more inmportant. My girlfriends mom used to get all hyper because we were not using "The all inclusive Grand Plan" enough!

That is the great thing about Disney World. Everyone in one way or another will be able to find a resort to fit their needs.

I do agree that the having the monorail at your resort is AWESOME!

durangojim,

sounde to me like your coworker may have been hiding her own feelings of inadequacy, and compensating by making it seem like YOU'RE the one with a problem. Quite frankly, it's a jerky thing for her to do, trying to make you feel guilty for spending YOUR money how YOU see fit.

I've never stayed at a value, but I've been on their grounds, and I've seen the rooms. While I appreciate the effort Disney puts into the theming and carekeeping, I find the values way too crowded and way too noisy, and the rooms way too small. The theme parks are so overstimulating, I prefer my resort to be at least a little more sedate, with a few more amenities then a pool and arcade and food court. If we're too tired to do much of anything else, I like to have at least the option of a sit-down restaurant on the grounds.

I understand and respect those that feel that a hotel is a place to crash after you're completely exhausted, and intend to spend little-to-no time at the resort or in their room. But when it comes to vacations, that's not how I roll. However, my fiancee and I don't have kids yet. There is a very real possibility that I'll change my tune once we have a kid. We're DVC members, and I tend to lean more towards getting Annual Passes. If sneaking in an extra trip in a year means staying at a value, and then slappy jr./slapperina is thrilled because he/she gets another trip to WDW, then so be it.

Although, since Premium Annual Passes come with free parking, if I had to choose between a nicer off-site hotel or a value...

...eh, I'll probably still choose a resort.

The deluxe resorts are nice, and if we wanted to we could stay there, but to be honest I prefer the Port Orleans type resort for a couple reasons.

1) The $1000 to $2000 more it would cost to stay at one of the Deluxe Resorts I feel is better spent on one of the Dining Plans or just more souviners.

2) The additional "features" of the Deluxe Resorts are lost on my family for the sole reason that the room is for sleeping, and that is pretty much it. The less time spent at the Resort the Better!

3) To me a trip to Disney = Opening your hotel room, and being out side! Hallways, Elevators, and Lobbys.....you can have them!

All in all to each his or her own. Give me Dixie Landings FOREVER!

I dissagree with you, My girlfriend and I were able to get a room at the GF for half the price, also people just don't use the rooms for sleeping I for one use them for business because not only do I have fun but I also get a 100% tax break:lol:

We used to be deluxe snobs...now we're vacation club snobs..

Just kidding..we're not really snobs..we just always preferred staying at the deluxe resorts. That meant we couldn't go every year when I was little since I do have 3 other siblings, but my parents, and now I too just prefer the deluxe resorts. We now only stay at DVC resorts because it saves points, but I would love to stay at the Polynesian again.

Just because you prefer staying at deluxe resorts doesnt make you a snob..many people prefer to stay at them for their proximity to the MK and also because they are viewed (and certainly seem to me) as nicer than most of the moderates and values. Being a snob involves shoving it in someone's face that you're staying at a deluxe instead of a value and looking down at them if they say they're staying at a value or moderate.

Some really cool things at the deslux resorts. Why Delux are so great

1. really cool pools with rock-work slides and landscaping. The storm-along bay at YandB Club is amazing. Its really a mini water park.

2. Real restaurants with themes and a small food court

3. Unique music soundtracks playing hidden in the landscaping

4. Spectacular soaring lobbies often with "real" fire fireplaces, entertainment, piano players etc.

5. Quite internal corridors

6. Private room balconies.

7. Rooms can be extra spacious. delux rooms often sleep 5 with that extra fold-down day bed for one

8. Gift shops tend to be really cool and themed well to the resort. Often there is more than one.

9. Monorails, boat launches to the magic kingdom and Epcot or walking distance to a park.

10. Little extras in the rooms.

11. Theming is very complete from architecture to artwork to bric a brac to menus and signage. It is almost like staying in a the Magic kingdom.

i love staying at the all stars and they are classed as a value resort, they have everything that i need -a shower and a bed. considering im in the parks all day until they close they suit me fine.the theming is great as ive said they have everything i need.
dont get me wrong i wouldnt mind staying in a deluxe resort but then you are only paying for more amneties and location but i dont think it would be the same. even though the theming and the amneties go up depending on which resort you stay at i prefer the all stars coz they have what i need. i think if i stayed in a deluxe resort even though it would be nice it wouldnt be the same as what im use to. i have looked and walked around all the resorts and think they are beautiful and each is unique but each to their own taste.

i want to stay in the CR for my birthday but coz its the high season its gonna cost me £5,000 plus and thats with single occupancy where as if i stay at the sports its only gonna cost me £1,350 and thats with single occupancy so even though i want to treat myself i have to be reasonable coz i dont want to be broke when i return home.

at the end of the day: its your money you've worked hard for it and you spend it however you want weather its at a value, moderate or deluxe resort it doesnt matter just as long as your there!!!

the next time she brings it up just say to her: to each their own!:)

Browniebee, a couple of questions that maybe you could answer by PMiong me.

We go to Disney 2-3 times per year for a total of about 20-30 days out of the year. We always stay at the GF or WL and almost always get a AP discount rate, we're probably spending ~$7500.00 in rooms per year. We've considered joining the DVC, but are concerned about being able to get the rooms we like at the times we like. My question is if you have the DVC are you limited to where you stay and when you can stay there. Thanks alot in advance.

If all you need is a shower and a bed, then more power to you! 5000 pounds for a moderate though seems outragious. How long will you be there. We've stayed for 13 days one time at the GF with a lagoon view room and still payed less than $4000.

Whoever told you that is just jealous.
I always stay at a deluxe resort I've stayed at the CR, AkL,BC and most recent the GF which I found to be better then all of them. I figure it's a vacation so you might as well enjoy it. My friend stayed at the pop and said it was so noisy, the GF is calm and peaceful Also at the GF the MK is only 2 min. away by monorail which is my daughter's favorite park.

If you have the cash to spend at a Deluxe and that is how you choose to spend it, good for you and enjoy it.

One suspects the "snob" comment is jealousy.

I've never stayed on-site, but I don't begrudge those who do. For the price of a couple of nights in a deluxe, I'm set for two weeks off-site giving me two weeks in the parks :D

With my belief in equal time for both sides here is my friendly response:

1. Port Orleans Slide is AWESOME! Also Caribbean Beach has a really nice pool with a bridge over it, and water cannons.

2. Port Orleans has Boatrights Restaurant (very nice) and a food court, both themed.

3. Frogs, Salamanders, Birds, Fish...etc.

4. Lobbies? I am there on the first day and last.

5. Corridors Schmorridors! Give me the lush plantlife or well manicured lawns at Port Orleans right outside my door!

6. I have a balcony/Deck at home I don't use that often, and Disney World isn't in my back yard!

7. Port Orleans 2 Full size, and a trundle bed with plenty of room to toss all my clothes around, and have room to play with the toys I...I mean my son...bought.

8. Gift Shop in Port Orleans (and Caribbean Beach) are nice with just about everything you would need. They even have Grey Poupon!

9. Monorail is the one thing that would be nice. Other than that buses do me just fine.

10. Little Extras? Not sure what that is, unless they have the santitary paper strip over the toilet seat. I LOVE cutting those and pretending I am the mayor of Toilet Town!

11. Theming in Port Orleans is AWESOME!

I have one more number to add.

12. With the $1500 to $3000 I save on the room, I can buy that 6 ft. carved Mickey Mouse I always wanted!!!!!!
