A couple of days ago I was having a discussion with a co-worker about WDW's resorts. I was saying that we usually stay at the WL or GF almost always with an AP discount. She has stayed at AS and PORS and suggested my wife, 1 y/o son, and I stay there. I replied that we like to stay at the deluxe MK resorts because of the extras and conviniences to which she replied that I'm a "Deluxe snob". She said this in all seriousness. I'm a pretty down to earth guy who's been going to WDW since I was about 5, we didn't ever stay on property until the late 80's and only then at the Disney Village, then later at dixie landings and some others. I worked my butt of in medical school and residency so I could provide my family with a comfortable living and now I'm labled a snob becuase we like to stay at nice hotels. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I think you illustrated exactly what the difference is between a Deluxe snob and a person who likes a certain resort at WDW. While you might prefer the Boardwalk or any deluxe that provides certain ammenities, you saw a good value in the free dining plan, stayed at a Value resort, and had a great vacation.

A Deluxe snob, in my opinion, would be a person who would ONLY take a vacation at WDW if they could stay in a Deluxe resort and not want people to know they stayed anywhere else. That person would have as many insecurity issues as the co-worker who called the originator of this thread a "Deluxe Snob". The problem is not his, but the co-worker's.

I've also stayed at most resorts from All Star to Poly but I can't bring myself to stay at the GF! I feel so uncomfortable there. I feel like we don't belong. I've stayed at every other resort and enjoyed the immensely......why do I feel so uncomfortable every time we visit the Grand Floridian?

To each his own. We like Deluxe resorts, so we stay there. Some people could consider even going on a WDW to be "snobby." But, I don't think staying at a WDW hotel makes anyone snobby, regardless of category.

completely agree....im always like "When i go to disney, i would never stay outside anymore, especially considering the bus service, and the overall feeling" and they are like "W/E staying in disney isnt that good blah blah"
but honestly im a disney resort snob...i would rather stay in a disney resort
anyday over non disney resort, even if it's one night....plus im a cast member
so my disney resort discounts rock...:sohappy: :D

Some really cool things at the deslux resorts. Why Delux are so great

1. really cool pools with rock-work slides and landscaping. The storm-along bay at YandB Club is amazing. Its really a mini water park.

2. Real restaurants with themes and a small food court

3. Unique music soundtracks playing hidden in the landscaping

4. Spectacular soaring lobbies often with "real" fire fireplaces, entertainment, piano players etc.

5. Quite internal corridors

6. Private room balconies.

7. Rooms can be extra spacious. delux rooms often sleep 5 with that extra fold-down day bed for one

8. Gift shops tend to be really cool and themed well to the resort. Often there is more than one.

9. Monorails, boat launches to the magic kingdom and Epcot or walking distance to a park.

10. Little extras in the rooms.

11. Theming is very complete from architecture to artwork to bric a brac to menus and signage. It is almost like staying in a the Magic kingdom.

I'll respond to a couple of those with good value sense:

2. You don't have to be staying at a resort to enjoy it's restaurants, and all resorts are easily accessible. Some people can't stand the fact that the Deluxes don't have a decent sized foodcourt, which is a BAD thing.

3. The values have unique soundtracks playing in the landscaping, as well.

7. Your #7 only matters if you have a bunch of people wishing to stay ing the same room.

8. Gift shops are easily as well-themed in the Values as they are in the deluxes.

11. Again, there is absolutely no shortage of theming at a Value Resort.

As said many times above. It ONLY depends on the family or guest who is visiting. TONS of people don't even see their resort except for when they go to bed and get up in the morning. So why would they spend THOUSANDS of dollars more on their hotel when they only sleep there. it wouldn't make any sense, and some would even consider it moronic.

SMART MAN:

"Let's see....I need a place to clean, well-themed, on property place to sleep at night while in WDW. A place that has everything I need and more. I've got it! Value Resort! I'll save $2000 and use it to enjoy the part of my trip I'm actually awake for!"

STUPID MAN:

"Let's see....I need a place to clean, well-themed, on property place to sleep at night while in WDW. A place that has everything I need and more. I've got it! I'll stay in the most expensive hotel on property even though I'll never be near the hotel during my stay except to sleep. Heck, I have extra money, so why not flush it down the toilet!"

SMART MAN:

"Let's see....I need a place to clean, well-themed, on property place to sleep at night while in WDW. A place that has everything I need and more. I've got it! Since I usually take a break in the middle of the day and come back to my hotel, and generally, I like to relax a few days on my trip and hang out by the pool, I'll stay in a deluxe resort! I really enjoy the nearness to the parks that allows me to do this, as well as the other amenities the deluxe offers for those that actually spend time their during their trip!"

It's not rocket science. There's only one question.....What do you want? If you want to throw money in the trash even though you won't ever be at the resort, GO FOR IT! If you want to save you hard-earned money for things in the parks and still stay on Disney Property, DO IT!

I prefer the term “Deluxe Connoisseur” ;)

I have had some bad experiences at some of the Value Resorts, like the family in the next room getting into a screaming fight at 2AM or the drunk guy who couldn't find his room, so he tried to enter ours. A call to the front desk had security up there pronto in both cases, but I have never had a similar experience at a moderate or a deluxe resort.

You can put me in that category, as well. If I can't stay on property, I'm not going!! I put it down to basic laziness - if soeone else is willing to drive me from my hotel to the park of my choice, why should I worry about driving myself??!!??:king: It's my one chance to be the Queen!!

Sadly I have experienced both at Moderates and Deluxes. Domestic violence can afflict any income level. And drunkeness, at Disney prices, you are more likely to find people with a higher income to be inebriated.

Well we're staying Deluxe because we'll have a lot of room time this trip. However, if our kids were older and we stayed in the parks open till close, then a moderate (or maybe value) would do us.

We're all different

I enjoy looking around at all the resorts. BUT, as a child we always stayed at the Contemporary...that's all there was-Contemp and the Poly. On my honeymoon in 1991 we stayed at the Grand Floridian and I have never looked back Call me a snob all you want I will never stay anywhere else!
This trip (9/17/06 -9/24/06 we just got back) we had a GF Concierge room and Platinum Plan and, frankly, how anyone wants to spend their vacation dollars should never be mocked, or belittled! It's your trip...love the poly? stay there. Think the Pop Century is neat...have a great time...everyone is different and Disney will cater to us all! Have fun!:sohappy: :sohappy:

Nah, not too snobby, though I WAS going to pretend to be the typical reverse-snob-ugly-American and write, based on your first post:

You "want to be spoilt?"

SPOILT?!?!?!

It's spelled "spoiled!"

My God, you'd think the English would know how to spell!

Eh, but I didn't.

But, for the record, "aluminum" is pronounced "Ah-LOO-min-um" and NOT "Ah-loo-MIN-yum." Your countrymen really need to get on the ball on that.

I thought this was funny!
Although, looking around there are plenty of Americans who never learned to spell!

When I decided to stay at a Disney resort for the first time there was no mention of deluxe, moderate, etc. There was only the Contemporary, Polyenesian, Disney Inn (Shades of Green now) and the campground. Your only real choice was to stay on property or off. The MK monorail resorts as they're known now were all there were. Since these were where I first stayed, I'm kind of used to the convienence of the monorail and such for getting to the parks, the moniker "deluxe" was added to these resorts much later. I detest the inefficiency of the busses and since I drive to the world instead of fly, I take the car to the places that have no monorail access. I have talked to friends that have stayed in the value resorts and based on what they've told me, it solidifies my decision to stay no where but a deluxe resort. If I didn't have the where-with-all to be able to stay where I wanted and had to stay somewhere else, of course I would, but for me it's a matter of choice and convienience. I've had Grand Floridian concierge for ten days and felt it was a little rich for my taste, too much pomp and lace, so I probably won't return there again, by the way i was only making 14 bucks an hour as a machinist then. You would be suprised at what you could afford when you save and budget wisely :king:

The Deluxe resorts are Fine and if you prefer stay there that is fine also.

But the vaules are so much fun.
I love watching the little ones eyes light up when they see their favorite character bigger than life.

I hate admit it.
I use to think I would never stay at a value. I heard about the tiny rooms and huge icons!

That was pre 2001.
In 2001 I went on a budget trip with my sis to Disney and since she was staying at the All Stars I decided DH and I should stay there also so as not to hurt my sister's feelings. I heard the stories of the tiny rooms and the "tacky" decor.

Once I was at the All Stars and saw those huge icons and Donald Duck at the pool I knew I found the "TRUE" Disney hotels.
Staying at the All Stars is like stepping into a Disney Movie Fantasyland. It is
an extension of the theme parks. It is Disney Magic!
At least that is the way I feel about them.
_____________________________________________

I love The All Star Resorts.

I am 56 years old and travel several times a year. I often stay at 4 star hotels.
So the deluxe and mod resorts are just another hotel/motel to me.
All Star is like being in the heart of the Magic and that is where I want to be.

All Star Music is my favorite. It is quieter because more couples stay there. I love staying at the Calypso building. It is closer to the pool, food court and bus stop.

I have visited WDW more than a dozen times with the 1st time in Oct. 1971. It was brand new. I've stayed at FW cabins, Disney Inn, the Dolphin a few the of Hotels on hotel Blvd., CBR and the towers at the Contemporary. I got to see the MK from my balcony at the Contemporary and I'm happy I got to experience it once. I just prefer the All Star Resorts.
The theming is pure Disney.
My last 6 visits have been at The All Stars and last fall when we took dd,dsil, and our grandson age 3 for 8 nights we stayed at the All Stars Music. I thought about AKL and even though we can well afford AKL I just wanted Alex to experience the Disney Magic at the All Stars on his first visit.
Where else can one find Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse at the pool?

I wouldn't say that I am a snob, but I do prefer the deluxes. I have stayed at the majority of the resorts on property for the experience to be able to share with my clients. I do like the deluxes. I have been staying at the AKL a lot lately since it's my favorite. I've stayed in a savannah view, a deluxe savannah view and concierge in the last 4 trips with my 5th coming up soon.

We have been to WDW so many times that it makes sense for us to stay at the deluxe with concierge. We sleep in a bit and then have a light breakfast at concierge. If we don't feel like staying in the parks, we go back and relax at the hotel and if we want a snack we head to concierge.

We also like the fact that they offer the sunrise safari which we did back in March and the sunset safari which we will be doing in Nov. to the concierge guests.

I like Imamouses take on this. I like deluxe connoisseur.

Uh oh, here's a little fuel to the flame:

........
4. Lobbies -- if you had ones as awesome as the GF or WL you'd want to spend some time in them -- music, drinks, shops...
........
10. Little extras -- if you've experienced them then you'd know,...or having your towels made into little animals by housekeeping, or having robes to wear or turndown service. Or my favorite -- a phone in the bathroom. That's right I said a phone in the bathroom. How many times haven't you been able to do your business becuase the room phone rang at the wrong moment, never again.

........
12. If you stayed at the allstars you'd have saved even more and could have bought a 12 ft Mickey Mouse, or most people who stay at a deluxe can still buy the statue anyway.

I hope you took the above in the spirit that it was written:lol:
LoL

Yes,you made some good points from your point of view.:)
Here are a few of my thoughts.

4. As for lobbies I usually just walk through (or I should say I drive through on my electric mobility scooter) them be it the Dolphin the CR or the GF, the lobbies in Vegas, the Hyatt at Bonita Springs or any of the other 4 star hotel I am staying at.

10.Humm-The last time I stayed at the All Stars in September 2006 I received towel animals. I also received them in October 2005 during a stay at the All Stars.
I personally do not use hotel robes as I prefer not wear something that has been worn by others .(No offense. Just my little hang up.)
Turndown service is nice but that is just a little pampering and if that is what you enjoy good for you.
As for the phone in the bathroom I have them in my bathrooms at home but I do not find them necessary in a hotel room since I have my cell phone and no one I know is going to call me on the hotel phone.

12. I stay at the All Stars and yes with my savings I could buy a 12 foot Mickey Mouse or...... I could book another vacation or two at another 4 star hotel.

Yes, I do have higher income (We pay more in yearly income taxes than the adverage family makes in a year) and I do enjoy staying at a Value resort.

I chose to stay at All Star Music for 3 main reasons.

1. I enjoy the theming at the All Stars. All Star Music is also is the quietest of the values. Generally less people stay there and there are more seniors and couples and less young children because children enjoy the themes of the other values more.

2. The bus service at the All Stars is very good. Since I use an EVC good bus transportation is essential.

3. The entry at the values and Mods are much more Handicap friendly.
I am able to get in and out of my All Star room unassisted. This way my husband can go and play a round of golf and know I can leave my room to relax by the pool if I choose.

The Deluxe rooms have a narrow hall with the bath on one side and closet on the other. I cannot open the door from the inside unassisted.

Ok after reading all of these posts my husband reminded me of a funny event that happened to us on Main St. while waiting for a parade. We were a big group and my brother in law had joined us for a few days. He is a dentist, makes great money, owns a nice home w/ a beach front view..but we were staying at Movies because its our girls favorite..so he stayed there as well. While waiting for a parade this couple strikes up a conversation with brother in law. they get on to people watching and all of a sudden the woman says "Well, you know why its gotten so bad here? Its because of all of the lower classes coming to stay at the value resorts..you wouldn't believe the kind of people they attract" and without missing a beat my brother in law says "oh yes..believe me I know exactly the kind of people they bring in!" we still laugh about it. That woman was a snob, she was making a class judgement that just wasn't valid. Last night on tv they were interviewing a lotto winner. This woman hit a multimillion dollar jackpot...yet they only buy used cars and bought a display home.....its just a matter of personal tastes you know what you like...more time in the resorts would surely require an upgraded room, less time would require basic ammenities.
last point: we've never been disappointed with Disney transportation (buses)

Yep! I have certainly been labelled a deluxe snob. However that's not it at all!! I just absolutely love the beach club. You can't help but become hesitant sometimes when people ask where you staying because of the "oh... we've never stayed there..."
The only reason we started there was because we had five people and, at the time, deluxe was the only choice. Now we save for it.
Don't worry though, i don't find you a snob at all! I respect your love for staying deluxe!

It's amazing how the people who have never been there are the first to judge.

One night my wife and I are on the resort monorail. As we are pulling up to the Grand Floridian a woman was gushing about how beautiful the hotel was, how she would love to stay there, etc. Her husband chimes in "You don't want to stay there. I hear that's where all the snobs stay." The monorail stops, the doors open and my wife and I (reluctantly) stand up and exit. As we are walking away we hear the wife say "But honey, they don't look like snobs!" We still laugh about it every time we stop at the GF.

BTW, I no longer consider myself a Deluxe Snob. I am now a Home Away From Home Snob. It's tough to go back to a regular room once you have stayed in a 1 or 2 BR at one of the DVC resorts.
