A couple of days ago I was having a discussion with a co-worker about WDW's resorts. I was saying that we usually stay at the WL or GF almost always with an AP discount. She has stayed at AS and PORS and suggested my wife, 1 y/o son, and I stay there. I replied that we like to stay at the deluxe MK resorts because of the extras and conviniences to which she replied that I'm a "Deluxe snob". She said this in all seriousness. I'm a pretty down to earth guy who's been going to WDW since I was about 5, we didn't ever stay on property until the late 80's and only then at the Disney Village, then later at dixie landings and some others. I worked my butt of in medical school and residency so I could provide my family with a comfortable living and now I'm labled a snob becuase we like to stay at nice hotels. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Speaking as a "label" , I find buying goods that fell off the back of a lorry helps satisfy the need for branding while minimising the outgoing cash flow. So I can be tasteless for less.:drevil:

Does staying at FW make me trailer trash? Or is it my mullet and potty mouth?
HI-larious. ;) No, seriously, though, I thought about the fake stuff while I was typing my post. Not sure that makes the reason for buying any better, but it DOES save money.

LoL

Yes,you made some good points from your point of view.:)
Here are a few of my thoughts.

4. As for lobbies I usually just walk through (or I should say I drive through on my electric mobility scooter) them be it the Dolphin the CR or the GF, the lobbies in Vegas, the Hyatt at Bonita Springs or any of the other 4 star hotel I am staying at.

10.Humm-The last time I stayed at the All Stars in September 2006 I received towel animals. I also received them in October 2005 during a stay at the All Stars.
I personally do not use hotel robes as I prefer not wear something that has been worn by others .(No offense. Just my little hang up.)
Turndown service is nice but that is just a little pampering and if that is what you enjoy good for you.
As for the phone in the bathroom I have them in my bathrooms at home but I do not find them necessary in a hotel room since I have my cell phone and no one I know is going to call me on the hotel phone.

12. I stay at the All Stars and yes with my savings I could buy a 12 foot Mickey Mouse or...... I could book another vacation or two at another 4 star hotel.

Yes, I do have higher income (We pay more in yearly income taxes than the adverage family makes in a year) and I do enjoy staying at a Value resort.

I chose to stay at All Star Music for 3 main reasons.

1. I enjoy the theming at the All Stars. All Star Music is also is the quietest of the values. Generally less people stay there and there are more seniors and couples and less young children because children enjoy the themes of the other values more.

2. The bus service at the All Stars is very good. Since I use an EVC good bus transportation is essential.

3. The entry at the values and Mods are much more Handicap friendly.
I am able to get in and out of my All Star room unassisted. This way my husband can go and play a round of golf and know I can leave my room to relax by the pool if I choose.

The Deluxe rooms have a narrow hall with the bath on one side and closet on the other. I cannot open the door from the inside unassisted.

Hotel Robes? I stayed at the GF and they provided us with brand new Robes and anyways you sleep in then same bed as everyone else

Not sure I even get the point of this thread. I had ignored it when I first saw it but now that it is once again alive.... I'll bite. If your intent in starting this thread was to say that the Deluxe resorts are superior to Moderate and Value resorts...well, thats kind of a given. Hence, the term DELUXE. Honestly, and don't be offended, I don't know you, I could be wrong, but your post really comes across and reads as though you are desperately trying to show off (particularly, your watch reference, a brand which really would not be known to most people) and trying to let others, strangers on the 'net (which is quite odd), know how much you spent on your trip and how much you enjoy spending. Not sure why anyone would take delight in referring to themselves as a snob unless they really believe that there is some self worth to derive from the use of that term to describe themselves or worse yet, they measure their own self worth by what they materialistically acquire. In my particular line of work, too often I encounter folks who really believe that the amount of $ they earn or the clothes they wear or the part of town they live in somehow has anything to do with who they are and feel a compulsion to let others know it. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not accusing you of this, but what I am letting you know is that the tone of your posts do come across that way. So you like Deluxes and your co-worker doesn't......yeah and your point??

If you didn't understand the point of the thread, why post?:veryconfu Although it seems as though you and my coworker are of similar mindsets -- calling people snobs purely because they may spend or buy more expensive items without bringing attention to it. And if you reread the first thread you should be able to figure out the point. Not quite sure where you feel that some are delighting in referring themselves as a snob. Also, if I were trying to show off, why would I use a watch reference that very few know about as you yourself said, wouldn't it make more sense to say I wear a (rolex, tag, or some other well known brand, maybe in New York many know about Panerai, but in the midwest, there are very few, and when I bought my first in 1999 hardly anyone knew about them, they were just a great looking watch with a company that had alot of history)? I take some umbridge with people who put down others because they may spend more. My rebuttles to previous posters were regarding points that they had made in respect to comparisons between deluxe, moderate, and value resorts. The watch reference was made to one specific poster. I always laugh when people say, "I'm not accusing you..." and then procede to criticize. I'm comfortable in my personality and I don't care too much what strangers on the net think. I was merely trying to find out if others have had the same experience that I ave had. So I guess I'd ask you the same question you aked me, what is your point in posting? If it was to let me know that I came across as a snob, then I appreciate the heads up.

Can't we all get along?
As the OP I'm going to try to bring this back on point succintly -- are you a snob if you stay at a deluxe (and therefore spend more on loding at WDW than others)? Of course not, but I'm sure some will disagree. But please, no more assumptions about posters' character.

Sorry, mate, but I was offended, for you and your wife.

As per my original post in this thread, I thought the coworker's comments about how you spend your money said far more about the kind of person she is than the kind of person you are. Whether she's jealous and petty because you stay places she can't afford, OR whether she can afford to stay anywhere but abhors extravagance, there's NO reason for her to call you a snob at all. Unless of course, you're lording over the little people and hire people to untie your shoes. You're not doing that, are you?

When it comes to all manner of spending, we have thresholds that we hold to with varying degrees of success. With the possible exception of people who can afford to buy everything their need AND everything they want, we all decide on items that are better to save money on, and extravagances we want so bad we don't care if we can get something similar for less. You should go shopping with this coworker of yours. Does she buy Oreos, or the knockoff generic version that supermarket provides? Does she buy generic engliish muffins, or Thomas'? When she goes to the mall, does she ever buy "labels" or is it all knockoffs and cheap imitations? What about her car? Forget about make or model, did she get any luxuries with the car? Was the CD player standard? Is her TV a name brand? Her stereo? When she goes to WDW, does she always eat counter service meals, because those meals fill you up the same way as those fancy table service dinners, and you KNOW you're paying allll that extra so's you can' be lazy and have someone bring it to you...

You get my point. We have no idea what this coworker's thresholds are. She might even think it's silly to quibble over a few pennies for cookies, a few dollars for pants, a hundred dollars for a nicer car stereo or TV in her home, the luxury of having someone wait on you. But those are HER thresholds. And somewhere, someone thinks she's a fool for buying into the Oreo name brand, when Kimmy's Krazy Kookies taste almost as good for seventy five cents less a bag...and someone else is willing to drive the extra 100 miles to Kimmy's Krazy Kookies Warehouse Outlet and stock up on cookies for the years at incredible savings. And if they called her a snob for her Oreo fetish, she'd be genuinely flummoxed. Because that's...HER threshold. And you have yours. Like I said, as long as you're not hiring people to work your mouth while you chew your food so you don't have to, I'd be hard-pressed to call you a snob.

MTV2 has a show called "Wonder Showzen" which is evil but brilliant. One time they were making fun of the ol variety show "Hee Haw." Their version was called "Horse Apples." They had a Southern woman make the telling statement:

"You Yankees think we're nothing but trailer trash who eat roadkill every night. And I suppose YOU have caviar every night?"

Sound familar? :D

I'm fine with anybody staying wherever they'd like. When you cross the park gates, we're all equal anyway.

Now...if somebody expected something extra in the parks because they stayed at a deluxe resort....I'd call snobbery then.

Just wanted to say thanks for the compliment.

Main Street USA. I don't know you, but you seem to be an insufferable load, the kind of person that would make me want to cross the street, rather than even run the risk of you trying to start a conversation with me, because I'd think that conversation would be filled with all sorts of theories about different types of people, and what motivates them, and how you'd probably classify that motivation based on your limited experiences, your developed biases & your desperate need to feel better about yourself when comparing yourself to people who might make more money than you.

Bear in mind, I said "I don't know you" and "you seem to be" and "I'd think that" and "probably." Therefore, based on your own logic, nothing that I said was actually insulting to you, and if for some reason you were insulted, then you're wrong. And I didn't even risk mentioning your spouse! Hooray for me!

But if you were insulted, then maybe you might want to look at your first post in this thread, and see if there might be a similiarity or two.
Why would what you posted insult me? I don't need you to say "I think", "probably", or anything else. I already know you don't know me. Therefore, anything you might say about me is worthless.

Let me be clear...I couldn't be further from insulted by someone of your "limited brain capacity," but the fact that you've simply not taken the time to read my previous posts before posting yourself, is a problem. You seem to think I'm some poor, deluxe bashing, money jealous person. Had you read, and understood my previous posts, (something that takes the mental fortitude of a 4th grader) you would've noticed things I've written that are to the contrary.

Reading comprehension is the key, though. So I'll no longer expect any coherent posts from you. Your not so clever word play may come across as smart to someone else, but you're wasting your time with me.

You have a good evening, stranger! ;)

As the OP, I thought I'd weigh back in on this topic (it got alot more replys than I ever imagined). We returned from our great trip last week, and it was extremely magical, especially for my wife who's birthday we were celebrating. So yes I am definately a deluxe snob as I don't think the things that I will list here could have happened at a Moderate or Value and to us and me especially they were very important:

When we checked in there was a half bottle of champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and a birthday card for my wife from Mickey. We ate and drank these later that evening while sitting on our balcony and watching the fireworks over the castle and saw the electrical water pagent

We used the Monorail to go to Chef Mickey's the next morning for breakfast where we celebrated her birthday again.

The small boat that goes to the MK, for MNSSHP my wife, son, and I dressed up as pirates, so it was pretty darn cool coming and going to the party on a boat, kept up with the theme.

So while the above may not be important to all, they certainly were to us, and when I shared them with my coworker, her response was, "huh, sounds like you had a good time."

By the way, just my wife and I are going back on Valentines to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and yep we're going to stay at the GF, and we're going dine at Victoria and Alberts that evening (add that to another reason I love deluxes), after all it is where we became engaged five years ago, and it's only been getting better ever since.

Well said!!!
Glad you had a great time...we very much enjoy th GF concierge also!
Congratulations on your upcoming anniversary..Have a Hawaiian Kona Chocolate Souffle for me!!!:p

Mackinac is great, we were up there over labor day, and while I like the Grand Hotel, I wish that they had the Grand Michiganian up there like the Floridian at Disney. Wouldn't a monorail be great around the island, it could be pulled by horses to keep with the theme of everything:lol:

The Grand hotel is wonderful.....if that's a trip you enjoyed you should look into The Cloisters in Georgia.....beautiful as well with great resort vacations

Still laughing......
I'm at a loss as to why anyone would be insulted by the comments of perfect strangers in a Disney discussion group! Please.... if you feel yourself getting upset or a rise in blood pressure STEP AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD! It will not follow you!

This was meant to be humorous...and finally I ask you before you post ask yourself...What would Walt do?

Mmmm, Hmmm. What he typed would've been mildly clever if it had been directed at someone who had been previously insulted, instead of me. I've yet to be personally insulted by anyone on these forums, and I've been here a LONG time.

Now, people have certainly attempted it now and again, but I'm afraid it just never hits the target. :D

Unfortunately this thead has gone way off point, entertaining, but off point.
As I see it:
You're a snob if you look down at others who don't stay at deluxes.
You're a reverse snob if you resent those who stay at deluxes.
You're simply ignorant if you think you can read others' minds andad you like to project your biases on others.

I'm not sure what there is here to argue about...

I bring home zero income so you won't see me throwing a lot of money around, but if somebody else wants to spend theirs on a week at the GF, a Fendi purse or a gold plated toilet, that's really his business and not mine. There's a reason Disney has so many different types of hotels. There is something for everybody. End of story.

To the OP, I've watched some old friends go through med school (pediatrics, med-peds, orthopedics) and I know how hard you have worked to get where you are. But many people don't get it. This woman's comment will not be the last. Have fun on vacation and don't worry so much about her or anybody else.
