Adventureland Veranda - Skipper Canteen restaurant

Yes. This is how restaurants routinely open. Just because the park will be packed doesn't mean the restaurant will be. They have complete control over how many guests are in the restaurant at a given time and it gives the option to shut down for a day or two to rework if the menu is poorly received.

Despite the timing being rough, and that 90,000 people will feel that their vacation was ruined because they couldn't get in, this is a very smart and controlled way to roll it out. (Of course I am going in Feb and am figuring all this messing around will be done before I get there!)

I think walk-ups are a terrible idea- particularly for the time of year it is going to open. Just open ADR for a week after you think it will open and allow walk-ups if you finish earlier than that. Let's get that announcement already.

Walk ups actually almost work in WDW's favor for the time of year. Since WDW is completely adverse to holding back any TS tables for walkups, these at least lets them have some walk up availability at MK during the busiest time of the year, potentially making a few families who neglected to book ADRs very happy. Which more than offsets upsetting any fanbois who are unable to make an ADR at the latest and greatest dining location.

The fanbois will be back in 3 months anyway to eat here in between their hours of standing in front of Frozen Ever After at Epcot hoping for a magical soft opening.

I feel for the 90000 guests who will have their vacations ruined by not eating in his location with a daily capacity of about 1500.

It's not a signature restaurant in any way, shape, or form. The menu is done, just not released. You don't just pull menu items out of a hat this close to opening.
It's not a normal signature restaurant in the way that WDW defines one (like an Artist Point or California Grill), but this restaurant will most certainly be something special simply do to its one of a kind menu, which I'm sure is not 100% finalized at this point. Just like other parts of the restaurant are getting the remaining details worked out, I'm sure the menu is just the same. Sure the main courses are done, but I guarantee you there are still some things getting finalized.

One of the reasons I'm excited about this restaurant is precisely because I think 90,000 people WON'T feel their vacation is ruined by not getting in. I remember someone suggesting a while ago that Skipper's Canteen is an attempt by Disney to take some of the pressure off Cinderella's Royal Table and Be Our Guest, but if that's true, I doubt it will succeed. I suspect parents clamoring for their little kids to eat dinner in a castle with princesses will not be satisfied with Jungle Cruise Skippers ;) But I will be satisfied, and unless I'm seriously underestimating the numbers of Disney fans who would agree with me, I'm betting this one won't wind up as a "you-must-call-180-days-in-advance-and-even-then-you-won't-get-in" kind of restaurant.

Or am I wrong?

Only time will tell if you're wrong ... but I suspect you are wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! ;)

I think you are wrong ;)

It is a relatively low capacity - around 220ish, and there are plenty enough Jungle Cruise fans, or just anyone looking for TS dining at the MK to snap those spots up pretty quickly.

There are other places to eat, just another reason to book another trip. ;)

Just because 90,000 people may be in the park on that given day doesn't mean their "vacation is ruined" because they couldn't get in. The people that care will get in and the more casual travelers likely won't (at least the first few days). But really, not getting into Skipper Canteen is going to ruin 90,000 vacations?

To clarify my 90,000 ruined vacations....

There are several types of Disney fans on the internet. 1) The type here, development, expansion, type people, who watch the parks from a overall operational POV. 2) The travel planner types. These are the ones that live and breathe Disney planning solely based on their next trip and executing their plan to the second. People who get annoyed because the only fastpass they could get was for 935a and they had it scheduled for 930a on their spreadsheet. The #2 type of person is the type that will feel there vacations are ruined if they don't get in. Go over to another forum... you know the one... and read some of the trip planning and trip reports threads. Sometimes I feel that we complain way too much here about silly little things (I'm looking at you hot cheese thread!) but those uber planners are even worse, by 1000 times.

Personally my Disney time is too precious to be spent sitting at a restaurant. I want to be out in the parks, enjoying life. I am even a fan of taking QS food and sitting on a bench watching people go by, rather than camped out in some drab theme-less box of a restaurant like Electric Umbrella! Then again, I am several thousand miles away and only get down there every few years.

Not sure about the 'taking pressure off' , but certainly leveraging what had been mostly abandoned real estate in the park and a way to drive guests toward another higher priced option. If they really wanted to 'take pressure off' they could do so with 24 hours notice by simply opening Tomorrowland Terrace and/or Tortuga Tavern.
