Eh...not really. Cosplay are fans dressing up as their favorite characters as someone would for Halloween or Mardi Gras. Bronies do not dress up as ponies they like as much as they...um...well....obsess over the love they have for them. They are very different. Don't get me wrong. There are people into cosplay who sleep, eat and drink the characters they portray which could be considered "unhealthy" by some. In general they are different.

Not to mention those who like to cosplay are not gauranteed to care about MLP.

Not quite. Bronie is a hop, skip and a jump from a furry. Like someone who dresses up and professes to be an Otter.
Otters are awesome! But you've just killed them for me.

Funny side story, my friends and I went to visit my brother in Pittsburgh and before we went down he told us there was a furry convention. My brother is a professional BS artist so none of us took him seriously. It came up several times the night we arrived and still no one believed him. One of the nights of or visit we were leaving a restaurant by his house and sure enough, some dude walking around with a tail in the plaza...

ESPN's Fantasy Sports pages are very popular. I've never used Draftkings, but it seems like something that Disney could just buy outright?
They definitely could. They bought about a 20% share of the company. The Draftkings vs Fanduel competition reminds me a lot of the Sirius vs XM radio thing back in the day. Right now these guys are both spending way more on advertising then they are pulling in, but it's a push for market share. Ironically NBCSports owns a small share of Fanduel.

I do actually think it's a pretty good fit with ESPNs season long fantasy sports content. I would expect to see a lot more articles and advice on setting daily lineups. It's pretty complimentary to their current business since most people who do daily fantasy sports are/were already playing in season long leagues. I think maybe Disney is taking a bit of a conservative, wait and see approach instead of buying the whole thing. They have been burned a little in the past on buying things they really don't understand.

I can top that. But it will have to be over beer and in person. And yeah, there's an Ike Turner reference in there too.

I'm often asked about my admittedly cynical attitude about TWDC of today and its leadership, and I would question how anyone that is either a fan or an educated consumer can't be cynical when they see how cynical the company acts toward its fans, guests at resorts, consumers and CMs.

A cynical attitude about everything that made this company once great (it isn't now, except in the Wall Street sense and recall the recent economic collapse if you believe this is what should be aspired to) and how that goodwill has been used for well over a decade (some would argue two) is quite normal and quite healthy.

Oh, before I get back to watching SNL and hiding the eggs for the fanbois tomorrow morning I must ask a question I haven't in well over a week: anyone seen that picture of Bob Iger at SDL yet?

I honestly think the bronies are the worst parts of the Furry subculture.
aka the ones who got hated for being too weird and tried to hijack MLP for their "acceptance" and "friendship" message.. but converted it into a nightmare of adult artwork and other horrible stuff.

You mean like controlling and abusive relationships?

Wait, I'm waaaaaaaaay off topic.

I actually met Mr. Jefferson himself, Sherman Hemsley, at the California Grill of all places back in 1998 and he couldn't have been nicer.

Sadly, he died in 2012 at age 74 of the same type of cancer that a loved one of mine is battling.
He shopped at a store I worked at regularly sometime between 2000 and 2003ish if I remember correctly, great guy!!

I live in Florida and should be slapped for asking this (my excuse, I live in NORTH Florida), but how long is the drive from the Vero Beach property to Port Canaveral? We're taking the DVC member cruise in August and will drive down Sunday and spend the night before driving over to the Port. However, I would much rather stay at VBR on my points than chance picking an iffy hotel near the Port.

Thanks. Always enjoy your posts.
Little less than 1 hour and 1/2...

Lets face it fantasy sports have gone from a sports version of SimCity to gambling where real money is wagered, Ive often wondered why the authorities have not shut it down. What's the difference between online games run by Sheldon Adelson or Steve Wynn vs a online game run by the TWDC significant money is won or lost in both cases, The game of skill is just a beard, poker takes just as much or more skill.

I can understand the old appeal of a fantasy sports league, taking real players and putting them in a virtual team and using the real game stats to decide wins/losses. But listening to Sirius the other day a new platform was being offered one which paid your winnings on 'game day'. At that point it was clear this is a new form of gambling.

The reason it's not shut down is that the companies don't take a cut of the money paid in. They pay out virtually everything that's paid in. They make their money from selling advertising on the site. Gambling is only illegal if the organizer takes a cut. Thats the loophole. That's why a March madness pool or those superbowl grids run in your office are technically not illegal. You are however required to claim gambling winnings on your tax return if you win one of those pools.

I do wonder what would happen if a casino company tried to do the same thing with online blackjack or even poker. It could result in a backlash and possible change in law. Daily fantasy sports have a huge upside and the market is growing rapidly, but the big risk is they are 1 gambling law away from having their entire business destroyed. It's a good thing TWDC has plenty of experience lobbying lawmakers to make sure that doesn't happen now.

If the company does not take a cut then how do they stay in business, One generally tries to have more at the end of the month than the beginning for the uninitiated it's called a PROFIT.

At the rates paid for internet advertisements I cant see that as viable business model.

Great post but I just wanted to throw in my two cents. My recent dealings with Accenture were subpar and the firm wasted ~$2mm on a project they worked on. I would imagine what Disney hired them for they were better suited to accomplish. Essentially Accenture couldn't properly grasp our existing data matrix used by the firm (large acquisitions made systems a complete mess) which extended the time of the project significantly and their services were terminated for the project.
They've had some amazingly successful projects, some amazingly unsuccessful projects (like why they changed their name) , and everything in-between. Same for all of the big guns in that space - EDS, InfoSys, etc.

At the base level, it's still a Buyer/Seller relationship. They're selling man hours/man days, and man years - bodies, along with some methodology. The buyer is looking for expertise.

But there are so many ways a well defined project can be doomed from the start - on both sides and at all levels. I've seen large, well-defined projects doomed from the start where everything is set up perfectly, then a C-level decides it's "too expensive", so 30% or more of design time, or testing, or project mgt, is cut out during negotiations.

Then there's the quality of the Team. They have thousands of consultants they can bring to the table. But, like all corporations, there are a few hundred that are truly the super stars, the architects. So, projects can be affected by what other projects they have ongoing.

Think of it like hiring the best, and largest paint company in your town to paint your house. It's a 3 grand project. If that same company has a 50 grand project to paint the new Lowe's Hardware, and another 60 grand contract with the State happening at the same time--- can you guess where all of their master painters are going to be working? But, they're still not turning your project down.....
