Background: We became DVC members back in November and this was going to be our first trip to our home resort AKL. Well when we planned the trip a few months beforehand, AKL was sold out so we had reservations at the Beach Club. I had also seen this cruise in the member’s book and we tried to book it. It was one of the few Disney cruises where the point conversion for DVC members was very reasonable. But alas it was sold out. I decided to keep trying though and after two months of calling every day, a month of calling every other day, and a week of calling every 3 days, we got a room!! It fit perfectly with our plane tickets so we switched. We only had about 3 ½ weeks before we left so we didn’t have much time to plan!

Day 1 – August 31st – Traveling to Port Canaveral

No pics today, sorry. I realized I didn’t take many here because I took the same ones last cruise!

We left our hotel in Newport at o’dark thirty in the morning. A hotel before our trip? Why, you ask? Because we had just moved all the way across the country from California to Rhode Island!! With several stops in between, we arrived in our new home, Newport, at about 6:00 the night before. I know, we’re crazy. But after a very long trip, including two car accidents within thirty minutes of each other the day before, we needed a break from reality! And cars for that matter!

But back to this trip.

We flew out of Providence at 8:30 in the morning. We had to fly to Chicago and then Orlando but our tickets were crazy cheap, so we weren’t complaining. The good news was we got an earlier flight out of Chicago and made it at 2:00 instead of 5:00.

After we got off the plane I realized I had no idea which car rental place I had used to reserve a car!! My very organized obsessive trip planner alternate identity self took a break this summer. There was too much going on and I spaced on some things! So everyone had a seat and I started calling companies. I found ours at Avis, and off to the counter we went. We had 7 bags (!!) and they gave us a PT cruiser type car. We squeezed in, and as Tim Gunn would say – we made it work!!

Off to Port Canaveral. Okay most of the drive was a blur because after the initial excitement of being in Orlando wore off, I fell asleep! I woke up as we were crossing the bridge to Port Canaveral. There was the Wonder waiting to set sail. A beautiful sight!

In Port Canaveral we stayed at the Radisson, where we had stayed before. A suite is $135 a night and worth every penny. There’s a ginormous hot tub in the bedroom. We checked in, and went for an early dinner since we missed lunch that day. We ate at Wendy’s (we were about to spend a week eating like Kings and we decided there was no need for a big meal tonight!), picked up some Dunkin Donuts for the morning, and headed back to the hotel.

We checked in on the hurricanes from the hotel internet. Gustav was clearly in the Gulf of Mexico by then but Hanna was headed right for the Bahamas!! Yikes! Okay, we chose to cruise during hurricane season so we couldn’t complain too much!

So we were off to the pool! The hotel has a beautiful pool. It was pretty crowded but the kids didn’t mind.

Then back to the room where the kids took turns bathing in the tub/Jacuzzi.
At 7:00 we headed down to the pool area for a meet and greet with some people from the DIS boards who were on our cruise. There was a huge thread there before our cruise. I think 175 cabins checked in. We signed up for a few things via that thread. The first was a meet and greet where we would get lanyards for us all to wear and keep our key to the world cards in. The people who made them did a great job and they were so handy to wear all week. Then we headed upstairs and settled in for the night.

Day 2 – September 1st - Boarding the Ship and Sailing Away

We woke up early to head to the port. Because we booked the cruise so late, all the online reservations for PALO were already taken. We knew if we were among the first to board we would be able to make one, so we were in a hurry. I also like to maximize my time on the ship!!

We left the room at 9:00 and DH dropped us off at the Port. One of the porters directed us to the part of the gate where the baggage guys would get our bags. We got behind one other family who was already waiting and settled in. Dh took the car back to the rental company and caught a shuttle back to the port. When he got back the line had grown to about 5 families. I walked around for a few pictures.

When I got back a few people were dropped off right next to us and stood in front of us. That was when the line evaporated. As more and more people were dropped off the line became a blob. It was a little frustrating. There is officially no line, so we couldn’t say anything, but it was maddening to see our early rising and hot wait in the sun seemingly become irrelevant.

Some of us were more patient than others...:lookaroun

You are a great writer. Thanks for the detailed & fun report.
A couple of questions if you don't mind . . .

(2) you weren't worried letting the kids run off?? ages??

Thank you Hollybelle!! I love cruise layouts so I'll probably drop everything else to do those first!!

Thank you too eagles. I did go down the big scary slides!! I went down the slide at Atlantis where you ride on an innertube and go into the tube that goes through the shark tank. There's another one that ds did that goes through the shark tank that's a body slide but I didn't do that one. I much prefer innertube slides and I figure you're going to fast to see the sharks anyway!!

Bradandsara I love to talk about my trip so fire away with the questions!! First we were in a category 9 on deck 2. I didn't really take pictures of my room because I took so many last time. It was a nice size room though. We all fit comfortably.

The kids are 13 and 10 (almost 11). I didn't worry about the 13 year old at all. We set several times a day to meet, do things together, and talk about where they were headed next. After we headed back to the room for the night he stayed in the kid's club and walked straight to our room after it closed. No side trips for pizza!!:D We generally knew where he was. We popped into the kids clubs occasionally to check on them too.

We kept a little closer tabs on the 10 year old. She had check in and out priviliges so we would send her to the club and she would page us when she was leaving. There was at least one time where she checked out, headed back to our room and ordered room service though. We made sure she paged us from then on. We were up on deck with her while she swam and we, or her brother caught movies with her in the theater.:)

Great trip report and pictures- so glad that you still had a wonderful time even with the weather. :)

My kids are the same age as your and DS really wants to go on the cruise. DD 10 did not until I showed her your pics! Now if I could just get DH on board.

If you’ve never done a Disney Cruise…do it!! Yep they’re expensive but worth every penny. Don’t forget how much that price includes too!! Do it. It’s amazing. We just sailed around three hurricanes and still had a wonderful time. Do it!

I second this! We had such a wonderful time on our 4 day cruise this past December. We were amazed at how much to do there was. I will have to remember the tip on the Atlantis though, we didn't know about that. We had an exciting tour of the island with a local! :D We are busy planning for a longer cruise for my husband's 50th birthday in 4 years. It will be hard to wait, but we want to be sure to celebrate in style! Thanks for a great trip report, it was really wonderful and it's helping me get jusiced for our trip in 6 DAYS to WDW!

Great TR and wonderful pics. I have been wanting to do a cruise for awhile but having a hard time talking the fam into it. DD is 12 and thinks we will sink like the Titanic :ROFLOL:and DH was in the Navy for 16 years (Air Force now) and was on quite a few Carriers so just another big boat to him. Maybe I need to let them see your pics. :animwink::lol:

I LOVE all your pictures, Tammy! It really showcases how much fun you were having on the cruise! We would love to do one someday.

Shame on you for getting so burned. But at least it seemed to pass before your formal pictures! I can't wait to see a full length one of that. I'm sure you both looked wonderful!

So glad you got to castaway cay. It looks fabulous! I really enjoyed reading all the details of your trip.

What wonderful pictures!! It really makes me want to take another cruise. My daughter's only 3 though, I might wait a few years. But it looks like you guys had so much fun- beautiful family!

Great report Tammy! I have never read a Disney cruise trip report before - it looks wonderful! Could you post some pictures of the room? Even if it was from your previous trip - I am curious to see what the rooms are like. Did you have a window?

Sure Minnie, let me go look for some. We had a large porthole window. I don't want to pay for a verandah because we don't spend very much time in our room and it's a lot more. But a window is great. I think worth the money.:)

Okay here's some.

Here's the view of the room from the stateroom door. Before you walk into this space there is a two door closet on your left and two bathrooms on your right. I should say a split bathroom. The first bathroom has a sink and potty. The second has a sink and shower/bathtub. It's very handy for multiple people getting ready.

The couch is made into one bed or a bunkbed every night by your stateroom host/hostess. Across from the couch and coffee table there is a desk area with a large mirror, some drawers, a cabinet, tv and cooler box/refrigerator type thing.

The Magic is currently in dry dock getting refurbed with flat screen tv's on swivel arms in every room. I'm not sure how that will affect the cabinet area. Probably free up one more cabinet.

I forgot to point out the privacy curtains which are great for waking up at a different time then the kids. The curtain over the window keeps out a lot of light too.:)

Have you stayed in a veranda room?? or a windowless room?? if so, what are those like??
Love the lifevest photo.

Lovely isn't it?

I have not. I've seen both. Don't get me wrong, a veranda would be awesome. It's just that it seems like too much money to pay when you don't spend that much time in your room.

Of course some people would say that about a window too.:)

For me, no window would just be so disorienting. No daylight, no light to help you wake up in the morning, no window to see if you are at your next stop. But that's totally just me.

If I couldn't go any other way but a windowless room, would I do it?
Absolutely!

This is the first trip report I've ever seen from DCL. On one hand, it makes me really jealous, on the other, it makes me happy to see the potential for a great time that we'll have on our honeymoon.

By the way, these pictures could sell the XSi. See if Canon will pay you to put something in your signature acknowledging that these shots were taken with the XSi. My favorite shot is the feet shot with the cruise boat in the background.
