DAK “Zootopia” is being created for the Tree of Life theater

What was developed has been known for some time. There is no evidence to support the idea that it might have taken a very dramatic turn in its conceptualization.
Maybe, maybe not. I don't think its a far stretch to think that they could have gone from potentially talking dragons and such to other sentient animals more akin to Zootopia. But guess we'll never really know from that perspective.

Anyways this is happening so we're going to be there anyways.

Surely there are other IPs that would fit better in Animal Kingdom than Indiana Jones and Encanto, if we HAD to use an IP or two.
Here’s my opinion this project should have started happening in 2022 and should have had an up ride instead of encanto it would have been a better fit for animal kingdom and would have filled the same family ride role in the parks lineup but encanto is what’s happening and I’m still very excited to see a great movie get its own ride!

part of me wonders if somewhere in the universe, Joe Rohde is reading the last few pages of this thread (and if the surviving artists and Imagineers who made the parks what they are are reading the messages calling them "very elaborate bubble wand strip malls"). I would pay to hear their round table discussion(s)

I'm sure many monocles would fall into dole whips as the artists faint and gasps since i'm the first person to ever comment its always been profit driven.

This is the opening scene of Zootopia. In it, that Zootopia is set in a parallel world without humans, where animals have evolved to become sentient and created a society. We know the 3D show going to Animal Kingdom is focusing on biomes. If the shows follows the angle of teaching us about animals and different biomes through the lens of "how they used to be" (AKA real animals), it should be a fine compromise to get Zootopia into AK

Mission Breakout currently sits at a 4.5/5 on touring plans. Can you give us any insight on how this compares to the DCA TOT ratings?

(Yes the zootopia thread has devolved into ToT vs GotG:MB debate)

DHS ToT gets a 4.6, but I don't think it's fair to use that

DCA TOT was 4.35 all-time across all age groups when it closed in 2017.

My sense with the switch to GotG is that Disney was also trying to untangle its IP from CBS' Twilight Zone. So they got a more popular attraction with less outside IP.

I don’t love zootopia - but there’s nothing wrong with it either. It’s better than turning red that’s for sure.

And as an IP - I think it fits the park better than Avatar.

Wrong on all three. Although the second point is more of a wash, both are atrociously bad. Avatar’s theme actually fits the park, as odd as that may be for me today.

Oh look. The same reason why Encanto doesn't fit in Animal Kingdom.

Zootopia at least has the "going savage" thing to allow some characters to act like animals. Sing doesn't even have that.

I liked Luca and Cars 3 too. I also liked Incredibles 2, Lightyear, and Elemental. Make of that what you will.
I think any film that involves animals CAN fit into AK if the storyline and theme of the ride fit in AK. If the Encanto ride is either about Antonio introducing us to various animals or if the Madrigals are trying to help nature or find or respect a columbian animal or something, the ride will fit. I assume we will get a book style report ride with the songs, with a slightly enhanced presence for Antonio... which while I'm sure will be a great ride, won't fit in AK.

Indy on the other hand I feel like will be a very similar concept to EE where we learn to respect a mythical creature.

IF Zootopia was focused outside the city and the different "animals" took us to where they grew up and showed us the natural environment they grew up in... it could work. If they built a Zootopia ride, I don't think it would vist the Hopps Family Farm, but this show might.

Sadly I feel like if they were going to include animals they would do it while the land was being initially built so it would factor into the overhead cost as for the emperors new grove show that would be a cool idea except that movie isn’t a musical.
The emperor's new groove soundtrack actually has 12 songs... it was just all cut when the movie was no longer a musical https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emperor's_New_Groove_(soundtrack)

Thanks Len, so the GOTG:MB ride ranks higher than the TOT ride at DCA. I'll call that a win for Joe Rohde

Calling it profit driven is very different than what you originally implied, though.

Of course they always existed to make money; there was never any intention to lose money running the parks.

The way the parks are run now (and have been run for the past 20 or so years) is very, very different than the way they were run for the first 40-50 years of operation, though. They still exist to make money, but the methods have changed dramatically.

They didn't exist solely to sell Disney media/merchandise (e.g., they actually ran shops that lost money for theming reasons; that would never happen now) -- it was just one element of many, and not even the main one. The parks were intended to be great experiences in and of themselves without needing guests to have any connection to Disney media.

I know. we were discussing the idea of a show repurposing parts of the plot of kingdom of the sun for the Nemo theater.
After reading said plot and seeing The Sweatbox which is a very interesting film I'm glad Mark Dindal came in to fix it to the best abilities and make it what it is..

Funnily enough, I agree with this on essentially everything EXCEPT Zootopia. It seems counterintuitive because, looking superficially at things, Zootopia seems to have the most to do with animals, but of the IP listed, it actually leaves the least room for real animal stories. It’s certainly accurate to say that animals are not core to IJ or Encanto, but the characters at least can and do interface with animals and/or cryptozoological creatures that behave in animalian fashion. Even if you went to the outskirts of the Zootopia world as you suggest, the characters still act like humans, just rural ones. Anything “animal” is essentially reduced to a quirk. Oh, this character is slow, that one has poor eyesight, that one sleeps underground, etc. Again, they can kind of work as commentators within our world, but unlike IJ and Encanto, which mostly share “our” world with some supernatural touches, the world of Zootopia is completely divorced from the topics and issues AK tackles.

New Groove has one original song. Nemo has zero. I think that proves that an IP doesn't need to be a musical to have a stage musical version at the parks.

Even further, Groove was originally meant to be a musical. There are actually a few original songs on the OST that are leftover from when the film was retooled into a buddy comedy during development.
