That idea of less energy is quite possible I guess, however, I have to wonder how many people really think about, the idea that it might take a little more power to cool the cars when their only real concern is that they want it cool inside and AC accomplishes that. Also now, many cars have a degree of insulation between the roof over the interior so whether it absorbs or deflects it is really not something that I think most people would even think about. And then you have an engine right in front of you that operates at 180 to 190 degrees at all times with very little insulation between you and the heat source. I just think that this is the color of choice at the moment, and very little scientific thinking has gone into it for most people.You actually save gas because the AC needs less power to cool down a white car vs a black car.. a black cat is constantly absorbing all heat.. the white is reflecting most of it.
Tinted windows do worse on the car skin and chassis, even if the internal area seems "colder". The best way is to use mirror like reflective film on the windows (polarized).
Those do reflect most sun and do not transfer the heat to the chassis.
