No, smart phones were almost always significantly more expensive in Europe and unlocked phones were more common. Things have changed in recent years with more deregulation in telecomms leading to more competition... but in general the old rule still largely applies... luxury goods are dramatically cheaper in the US then abroad.

Google makes a very good nexus line that are unlocked and very good phones that Google directly support software upgrades on. Motorola is even attempting similar phones. They are affordable and just as good as any subsidized carrier device albeit Samsung htc or apple. Google is doing a good job trying to change things.

What we pay is nothing compared to what people pay in other countries. Most of the phones in the US r heavily discounted. People overseas do not get those discounts and en up having to pay market value for a phone! The "real" phone prices are 2-3 times higher than what we would pay for a new iPhone!

Not discounted - subsidized. You pay a lower price in exchange for a locked in contract term.. whose price includes dollars to offset the upfront phone cost. But this is changing.. carriers are switching to models where they charge full price for the phone, in exchange for no contract and lower monthly fees. (This is the AT&T Next program in a nutshell). For the most part, all they are doing is moving the phone subsidy out of the monthly contract price.. and asking you to pay the full price of the phone, even if on an installment program.

Carriers are fighting the old contract lock-in and EFT arguments... so their answer is 'fine, no contract.. no subsidy... and we pitch it as if you can get a new phone every 2 years'. sure, you can BUY a new phone as often as you like :)

Well to be honest, the plans aren't really cheaper and some carriers will continue to charge you monthly for the phone even after its "paid off". It's really just trickery. The only way to save money is to procure an unlocked phone, which there are a few great choices now, and activate it. Only downside is that it has to be with a GSM carrier, at&t or t mobile.

Has Maiden got enough responses not to be counted as one of the many thread drifts? On a related note, I think one reason you do not see local bands trying to cover Maiden songs is becuase they do not have a bass player like Steve Harris.

Was standin behind a family from Glasgow during the castle show and Wishes in April. During polite conversation, he mentioned they had filled nearly a suitcase with new shoes purchased in the States due to the cost.

Speaking of Disney things... has anyone ever read "Disney Wars"? I finally got around to reading it and I am still shaking my head. If only half of it is true, then Disney, at least under Eisner, was one giant cesspool of dysfunctional executives that were paid so much that they were unable to overcome a power mad leader. I would be interested in knowing if other companies are run like this. I am amazed that Disney is still in existence. The team of Roy Disney and Stanley Gold are no longer. I worry about the fate of the place without these two. The two of them brought down the evil giant when no one thought he could be pushed out.

Or are we still talking about Apple as if anyone cares other then a couple of ya!

I am so jealous. I've only met the drummer :hilarious: He was still a cool guy though. He served our food when we ate at his restaurant. Got a few things signed as anyone would :)

I've never seen them but the Iron Maidens are pretty popular.

Tell me about it, I've promised my 11yo I will take him to a few shows next year on a likely US tour. I've been following them since '83. Same year we first visited EPCOT, not a bad year.

Staggs was not just part of Strategic Planning, he ended up being its head. Rasulo also came from there, with Staggs.

It is quite a thread drift, apologies. It is just so rare that I find other people to discuss Maiden with, other than my father. <now I am showing my age :p>
