Right now, I'm watching Beauty and the Beast with my 3yr old. As I sit in deep thought watching this movie, I am wondering about alot of "HUH?" in the story.

Beast(Prince Adam) answers the door and refuses an old lady a night's stay. she turns him into a beast. If he doesn't find love by his 21st birthday, the spell sticks.... Okay, one of the characters says they had been that way for 3yrs (correct me if I'm wrong as I know y'all will). So that means he was 17 when the spell was cast. Um, where were his parents? Why was he answering the door anyway? Wouldn't it have been his parents' house?

The spell turned the entire castle's servents into objects representing themselves or their trade/job. In the case of chip, he's Ms. Potts' son who lived there and fell under the spell, too. Okay. Did anyone notice that, in the scene where Ms. P tells Chip off to the cupboard with you. It's past your bedtime, you see the cupboard is full of tea cups that are all asleep. She calls them his brothers and sisters....Uh, where's Mr. Potts and how on earth does Ms. Potts have all of those children? You never see the other children anywhere else, even the end when Chip is turned back into a boy.

Also, just about every object in the castle is alive. Could he really have had THAT many servants?!

And wwhat is Prince Adam prince of? Where are his parents who should be king and queen? How did no one KNOW he was a beast?! The village wasn't that far away if the villagers were able to walk there carrying weapons for the Mob scene. How did no one know a)their prince was enchanted and b)that a beast with a temper problem lived up the road?

Gaston's song in the tavern. The triplets sing and Gaston picks up their bench. Did anyone else notice that Gaston just stands hunched over behind them breathing down their necks while they sang?

There are more things but Im not going to butcher the movie. lol. Has anyone else seen odd things in a Disney movie that just makes you go HUH?!

His parents don't really matter because the story doesn't require them to be involved. It is perfectly plausible to assume that they have died or that he through them out of the castle. Either way, not needed.

The anthropomorphized objects in the castle aren't ALL previous humans. I think the ones with faces and voices are the ones that were human, and the rest, like the faceless forks and cups, are just enchanted objects. When the curse was broken they went back to being inanimate objects.

As for the castle and the village's knowledge of it, I think it is established that it is forbidden. Castle's also would typically hold armory and armed soldiers of some sort. They didn't go near it because of fear. That's plausible enough.

Also, it's a fairytale.

If you look at anything close enough it will get pretty ugly.

Can you guess what this is?

I used to love Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. That's the one where Jason is resurrected (for a third time, assuming he was never dead before Part 1, where his death as a child is discussed but we never actually see him die, so presumably he survived). In this installment after being brought back to life, he climbs from the depths of Camp Crystal Lake onto a boat filled with seniors taking a trip to New York City...

And then I realized, lakes are self-contained bodies of water, there are no lakes that have an inlet to the Atlantic Ocean that could take a boat to Manhattan.

And it was that inability to suspend disbelief that ruined the Friday the 13th series for me. Everything made sense until that...

Suspend reality if you watch any of these movies. Last time I tried I couldn't turn my pumpkin into a coach either.

ok, duh. lol. There's a difference between fantasy and missing elements. Obviously, there's no such thing as a man being turned into a beast:kiss:

This was a light post, people. lol. Just wondering if anyone noticed any oddities with other movies.

It's worse than you think. In Be Our Guest, Luminiere says "10 years we've been rusting. . ."

He was 11! She cursed an 11 year old kid for not knowing the meaning of inner beauty, and demanded he find true love by 21!

Harsh.

Yes, you're right! I forgot about that part!

I shall attempt to clear your confusion with some simple "fillers", if you will, for this particular Disney Gem.

  • First, Prince Adam is a wealthy, aristocratic orphan. The Old Lady killed his parents when they refused to buy lemonade from her stand.
  • Second, Mrs. Potts had all of those children with prince Adam's father, the king. Consequently, most of those children are accustomed to remaining "out of the way" because of the scandal that they would create if their presence was known.
  • Third, the castle has a multitude of servants because all of those people had at one time blackmailed the king regarding the 'leaking" of information to his wife. In a depressed French economy, a steady job was better than a one-time payment.
  • Prince Adam was the Prince of Cigarettolia, a little known town in France that started the whole smoking craze for the entire nation.
  • Fourth, the entire village was unaware of the facts concerning their prince, the beast that he had become, or his temper, because they were too busy complaining that they had a three day workweek. Their grueling schedule was enough to keep them occupied beyond any concern for the monarchy, or politics in general. Sacre bleu!
  • Lastly, Gaston breathes down the necks of the triplets because it is cold, and he is concerned for their health and comfort. You see, he is really just misunderstood. He's not really a bad guy, just someone who loves his Belle enough to kill for her.
I hope that I have been of some service in clearing your confusion over this simple, magical tale of love and adventure. I am rsoxguy, fairy tale guru.

Throughout the history of hereditary aristocracy there have been young orphans. King Louis XIII was coronated King of France at the age of nine, just two years younger than Prince Adam.

With Lumiere's "ten years we have been rusting" and development work that was done, the curse lasted for approximately ten years. This brings up the issue of where did Chip come from (How does a Teapot reproduce?) or why nobody else aged.

If I remember correctly, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas says that part of the curse was that only Prince Adam would age. The premise is that Forte, court musician who is now a pipe organ, wants to remain enchanted and not deal with aging and being human. Also, the film establishes that not only did the Enchantress curse an eleven year old boy, but she did so on Christmas Day!

The plot question that bothers me about Beauty and the Beast is that the Beast is Prince Adam and yet the whole time the entire town seems totally unaware that Prince Adam even exists.

The Great Lakes can be traversed to the Atlantic.

Ponds...now those are usually self contained.

Nope. I'll give you a hint. It is an element from the Beauty and the Beast story.
