Barium-cobalt-einstein-kool-ade! An H20Babie Pre/Post Trip Report

Warning_Sign-1.jpg

Warning: This Trip Report may contain immature behaviour that some viewers may find disturbing. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.

The Set-up:

After our December trip in 2008, it was agreed upon that we would not go back to WDW until 2012, and would instead take a cheap beach vacation over the 2010 spring break (using Airmiles and staying with my snowbird parents). As “luck” would have it, Airmiles flights were totally booked for our original spring break dates March 27-April 4). The earliest we could fly into Tampa on March 28, and there was nothing but a flight out of Orlando on April 6, 3 days after my parents vacate their condo. Hmmm, what's a poor girl to do? Why, stay in Disney of course!

But … (da-da-da-dum …) Back in January, it came to my attention that my teaching contract was going to be extended. It was supposed to end March 26. Back in October, when I was booking our vacation, the teacher I replaced was adamant she was coming back to work in April. Well, lo-and-behold, she's decided to take the rest of the year off. Since we were staying on the coast with my parents for the majority of the trip, I thought if my contract got extended, I would have to cancel the WDW portion of our vacation since we come back 2 days after spring break ends. My principal told me not to hold my breath and that it would be very unlikely I would be able to get a two day leave added onto spring break (a very big no-no for teachers here).

Well, last month, my principal came up to me and told me to call the the central office to speak to the superintendent. The superintendent offered me the extension (which I obviously accepted). Wanting to be totally transparent as not to jeopardize future opportunities, I then told the superintendent my situation and asked about the possibility of a two day leave. Amazingly, he agreed on the spot, noting that it was a special circumstance and acknowledging that I may have made plans in the fall based on what I knew in the fall. So, my contract was extended and my leave was granted! I have to say, after that phone call, I was so ecstatic that I did my happy dance in the staff room.

The Suspects:

Me, single mom and teacher extraordinaire. Over 20 trips in 35 years. On a quiz, I was declared Most Like Belle (“You love to read and are known around town as quite a catch, but they also find you a tad odd”). Lol … who me?

Jackson, 8, my son and Co-accused. Conceived in Disney World and addicted to pin trading (think Phineas, “We're gonna build a rollercoaster!).

Mom, 60, our very own Kitty Forman (“Well, fine. Kill each other. Just do it together!) Here she is, without a drop of alcohol, doing "The Robot" at MVMCP:

Dad, 62, the Crankshaft of the family, ready to whip out his “Tape Measure of Life” on a moment’s notice:

My mom loves Disney. My dad … likes it, tolerates it, but doesn’t “get it”. The last trip with my dad there was in March 2007 – with us and my brother’s family. Actually, make that my brother’s whole family (wife, kids, her parents, her siblings, their kids, etc.) Needless to say, my son didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with his Granddad. My mom came down on my 2008 solo trip for a couple days, and hit the World with us on our December 2008 trip with our besties. But my dad … could we convince him? They would already be in Florida … And, what’s that I hear? My parents are coming with us? Oh my … nothing like a little guilt from their grandson to have them roaring into the World with us!

And by now, you've probably all been wondering about that warning. My family is a bit off the wall, a little unPC, and with a somewhat British (aka potty) sense of humour. In fact, our family motto is something like this ...

Don't say I didn't warn you :D

Keep Moving Forward ... The Itinerary:

Welll, Crankshaft (Dad) and Ms. Kitty (Mom) have been down on the beach since Valentine's Day. It sure is nice to see the weather start to improve :)

Jackson and I head down on March 28 via Air Canada. We leave the 'Peg at 9 am and get into Tampa at 8:30 pm. With the 5½ hour layover in Toronto, we plan to clear US Customs right away and take advantage of the Premier Plaza lounge. Jackson can play his DS, I can read and if I need a bathroom break, it will ease my mind to have him in the lounge rather than out with the masses at the gates. (Plus, I hear there is a buffet and help-yourself bar!)

March 29-April 2 will be spent hitting the beaches (St. Pete, Passe-a-Grille and Fort de Soto are musts) with a mid-week trip to Busch Gardens. We also plan to hit Ellenton Outlet mall and the Wagon Wheel flea market, and perhaps a day trip to Sanibel.

Since we'll be at the World over Easter, Jackson and I have decided on 3-5 Must-Do's at every park, and if we get to go on more, it's gravy (we've been so many times, we won't wait more than an hour for anything!)

Saturday, April 3:

Bright and bushy tailed Saturday morning, we head to Coronado Springs and check in. Jackson and I have reservations for the Pirate's League at 2:30 and then dinner at Chef Mickey's just before 5 pm. As long as we get to ride the TTA, PoTC, Buzz and SM, we'll be all good! Jackson's doesn't remember being on CoP, so I'd like to get that in there too.

Sunday, April 4 (Easter Sunday):

We hit the ground running for EMH at Epcot. We will take a swim break back at CSR before returning for our early Easter dinner ressies at Le Cellier (home sweet home) with Mom and Dad. Our top five must do's are Soarin, Sum of All Thrills, M:S, TT and SSE. After dinner, we may wander over the to the Boardwalk and come back for Illuminations or we may just head back to MK for pm EMH.

Monday, April 5:

This is Jackson's day and we are going to EMH at DHS. His to-do's are RnRC, ToT, Star Tours and TSM. We have lunch ressies at the Sci-Fi and plan to go back for a swim and, maybe, hit DTD for the Lego Store. Jackson would like to come back to DHS that night for Fantasmic (he hasn't seen it since he was 4 or 5) or we may end up at DAK's EMH.

Tuesday, April 6:

This is our last day  and we are raring to go to DAK. Musts: EE, Kali and Dinosaur. Lunch ressies at Yak & Yeti (by far our favourite meal last trip). If we're done DAK early (before lunch), we'll go to DTD before going back to pack and drive to the airport for our 8:30 pm flight back home (at least this flight is direct!)

And there you have it

Looks like we're in for a crazy adventure when you return! LOVE the picture of your mom doing the robot and it cracks me up that you prefaced the picture by stating her lack of inebriation.

I love Coronado... it's my favorite of the moderates, so I can't wait to see your pictures! HAVE FUN!

Woo Hoo!!! So happy for you!!! Enjoy the trip!!! It's getting closer!

3 more days (I never count today or the day we leave, makes it seem shorter)!

Interesting...to say the least...so far!

Ooooh, stay tuned for the post-show :D

It's the only mod I haven't yet stayed at, so I'm really looking forward to it!

For fun (and to tick her off a bit), I sent by BFF the online checkin confirmation ... lol. She replied to take lots of pictures of CSR!

We will be at the same places on Saturday and Sunday. Hope you have a good trip!!

Back atcha!

Sounds awesome! Wish I could tag along for "Jackson's day"!

And congrats about the contract, too =)

"Jackson's Day" is probably going to be the most tiring (for me). I've been trying for the last couple of years to get him on ToT to no avail. It's not the ride he's scared of ... he gets scared standing in line!

An excellent, most interesting, and creative trip report.

An A+ so far.
Continue, eh.

:)

A+ for Teacher ... Awesome! Now, don't tax my gig so hard core, cruster!

We're back!

Well, actually, we got back around 2 am on Wednesday, but between work, school and my darn allergies, this is the first chance I've had to check in.

I'll be starting the post TR sometime today ... I just have to go through the two memory cards of pictures! :)

Sorry for the late post ... my laptop caught a very bad cold and I thought it was going to die :( Luckily, it was able to have an MRI and after some minor therapy, is experiencing a renewed sense of vitality. I will get on my post TR later today now that I have been able to download all the pics!

Needless to say, it was a fantastic trip!

Keep your eyes posted for the first installment ...

Day One - Travel Day

We woke up early for our flight to Toronto. My (ex) mother-in-law drove us and we arrived on time. The one snafu was that for some reason Jackson and I didn't have seats beside each other (what?) but we rectified that as soon as we checked in and all ended up well and good.

Going through security in Winnipeg, I set off the metal detector and was subjected to a full pat down along with some hands going into places I would rather not mention. (I was going to make a crack that it was probably the most action I've seen in a while but decided they didn't look too joke worthy :o )

The flight was uneventful and we landed in Toronto on time, picked up our luggage, and proceeded to US Customs to wait our full 5.5 hours before the next flight.

However, it must have been my lucky day because we got the most cranky, rude and mean US Customs agent ever! As I handed him our passports, I said something to the effect of, "Good afternoon." His reply was, "What's so good about it?" and literally threw our passports back at us. Unknown to us, he had tagged us for extra screening, and our carry-ons, my purse, Jackson's stuffed buddy were searched, plus we both had to get our hands swabbed for explosives! Jackson was a little scared and unsure, but the agent who handled us there was friendly and great with him (well, both of us actually). By the time we cleared Customs, we had about 3.5 hours left so we grabbed something to eat. Luckily, we found a little nook to sit in and watched some hockey.

And Jackson decided to ride the "people mover" over and over ... "to prepare for Disney, Mom!"

P3280015.jpg

The flight to Tampa was fine, and we each watched a movie in in our seatback video sets (Jackson watched Alvin & the Chipmunks while I watched Princess & the Frog). When we landed in Tampa, Jackson sucked in the air and said, "Ahhh, smells like Florida".

Crankshaft, my dad, decided to have some fun with us. Usually bald on top (with hair in a ring around his head), he met us looking like this:

P3280016.jpg

With my parents, we drove to condo as night was falling, brought in the luggage, talked a bit and hit the sack so we could be up bright and early to begin our adventures.
