Why was the skyway to Tomorrowland/Fantsayland removed, officially?

I used to enjoy the skyway from Fantasyland/Tomorrowland. Does anyone know why this was closed and removed, officially? Was it due to the tragic death? I miss the skyway and long for its return (although i know it never will.) Thanks:wave:

I believe the death, the cost to run the system, and the age and out-datedness (that a word!?) were it's end.

Honestly, I don't miss it....It looked odd, especially from afar.

^ Agreed. It looked way out of place from all of the pictures I've seen. One good thing, though, was that it gave you a good aerial look at Disney.

It did give you a great view ... however it also gave you a great view of all the ride buildings behind the facades as well, which was not so attractive. I think Servo is right, it was closed after the death then removed permanently a few months later. I rode it once as a kid, the coolest thing about it was the waterfall at the tomorrowland station, but that was the 'old tomorrowland' when it actually fit in.

Didn't really think about that. Also, it must have caused many notsosmart guests to bypass several things by riding the skyway.

Just my opinion but the only good thing it did was detract some people so the real rides were a bit less crowded. I think they did the right thing by shutting it down because like others have said, it just looked so out of place and out dated.

It also did not comply with the ADA, and there was no way to retro fit it. You couldn't ride it as a complete circuit.

I never thought of that. That is an excellent point. About the ADA compliance, I mean. Also about the circuit. In response to another post, it did give you aerial view, but I guess it was out of place. Thanks for the info folks. ALways appreciated.:sohappy:

I believe it was definitely in part to the death of the maintenance worker. The last time I rode it was when my 12-year-old was a baby. Then on our next trip the following year, it was gone. It was funny though because we knew something was different but couldn't place what. It wasn't until a much later trip that we realized it was gone. And there was absolutely no sign of it ever being there. Weird. My husband was afraid of it anyhow. I did enjoy the view and wish my kids could have experienced it.

I don't believe ADA had anything to do with it.. After all, the lift at Blizzard beach still operates to this day.. of course, it does have a Wheelchair car... which could have also been added to the system in MK as well..

Between the death of a CM, and a variety of other things (spitting on other guests/falling objects) it needed to go.... unfortunately.

Officially it was maintainence and lack of available spares.

Unofficially all of the above.
As always Martin hit the nail on the head. Rarely do things at Disney close for one single solitary reason. Rather there is always a myriad of things that add up to an attraction simply not being worth having anymore. In the case of the skyway it is my understanding that the company that made the skyway went belly up so replacement parts had to be made one at a time in the Disney machine shops. Add to that non ADA compliance, unattractive back stage views and guests throwing and excreting things from the cars and it equals bye-bye skyway.

Not quite; the pylons remained for some time after the ride shut and the cables were removed. If I recall the towers came down late 2000-early 2001.

Heading for the great escape.
Large sea birds that were lost used to roost on the cables defficating on the paths below, and this was costing a fortune to clean up. Plus the micro organisms in the ________ were slowly eating the cables, and they werent paying for the food.

I totally forgot about the waterfall until you mentioned it!

As a kid we always rode it on every visit. I would not make a fuss but I was always terrified. I am afraid of heights and worried about getting on and off it without falling.

I'm glad it is gone. I would not want anything falling down from it (as was mentioned on this thread) onto my kids.
