Space Mountain Heading to the Scrap Heap :)

You betcha - some of the planets are 3 dimensional, lit, spinning objects, some are projections onto spherical screens. The comet chase is actually a projection; as you get closer and pass under it the footage changes to suggest far more movement and speed than a prop could give. And the supernova explosion at the top of lift B is a projection - and way the music reacts to it is stunning. Speaking of which, have I seen the nova projection in Anahiem or Hong Kongs ride?

 Good point. The original version of Space Mountain (while not feauring the comet/supernova effect) did feature some interesting things. You would literally fly through a 3D model of a space excavator and pass through a meteorite. DL does have a 3 dimensional meteorite (that is usually never lit) but that is about it. I doubt Hong Kong has anything remotely close to any of that.

Hopefully adding audio wouldn`t need closure; setting up the audio zones and required tech could be 3rd shift, as could the adddition of a new fleet of cars. Even with T&A it may take a while but surely it could be done overnight? They`ve proved audio would work in Orlando so it isn`t exactly starting from scratch.

Isn't that not on the table anymore? I figure that they are not planning to do audio?

You can't have a Laser Cannon! You'll shoot your eye out!

Hmmm. So making Space Mountain better isn't necessary? This looks like an argument for a Formidable Opponent! Me!

Servo, it's great to have you here.

It's an honor. You get that thing I sent you?

Ha ha! don't get me started! Anyways, have you heard they might not be doing that much with Space Mountain.

From who?

Well...nobody really, everyone is saying that.

So you don't know FOR SURE?

Well...technically yes, but it's pretty likely true.

That may be, but what you don't REALLY know can't hurt you.

What?

It's a relaunched.

So that means MUSIC?

No.

But you just said it was relaunched?

It was.

Then there's new track, lighting and such?

Maybe.

MAYBE!?!?!? Why don't they just say what you will or won't be doing?

Because what you don't know can't hurt you.

But why should I be hurt if it's relaunched? That means it's going to be bad right?

SHHHHHHhhh! Don't say that!

Why not?

Because everytime you do that, you're HURTING the rehab.

NOOOOO!

That just cost you new seats buster.

I'm confused...so we won't be getting a real big rehab, but if we talk bad about it we're hurting the rehab...that isn't really happening?

Oh, it's happening.

Then why aren't they going all out?

It's a classic right?

Of course.

You wouldn't want it to be bad right?

But it is bad now, with how out of shape it is.

Exactly, which is why it's getting a rehab.

But you keep insinuating that nothing will change?

Because it's a classic.

This is just circular logic...

Like Space Mountain...

Good point.

Let me put it this way, you like Coke right?

Sure, why not?

But aren't you getting a little sick of the taste?

A little. Where are you going with this?

Which is why I'm taking it away from you to change it.

MY COKE!

It's too late, you wanted it better.

So you're making it better?

Not really.

So it's going to be the same?

No, it's "Relaunched".

If you're not changing it, how can you call it "relaunched" then?

What? Soooo you DON'T want your newly Relaunched Coke, and want a SPRITE instead?

Ennnhhh, not really.

So you have no choice. See, it's all about supply and demand. You WANT a better Space Mountain Coke, so we oblige.

But you keep everything the same?

Because it's classic. And YOU don't want Universal Sprite.

Yeah, I guess....

Now what do you want?

Well, I want my Coke back.

Here you go, it's Relaunched.

REALLY!?!?! That's great!

*Takes a sip*

Kind of...tastes the same though.

That's because it's classic.

Oh, I see. Wow you did a great job keeping it classic...and somehow new!

Relaunched. Your welcome.

*takes another sip*

Mmmm...You can REALLY taste the classic. And YOU SIR, are a Formidable Opponent.

I'm shocked you used the Coke reference...maybe you should do some research. In the 80's they changed Coke...from the CLASSIC recipe to a new recipe...they called it NEW COKE. Guess what? NOBODY DRANK IT BECAUSE IT WAS HORRIBLE. Shortly thereafter Coke changed the recipe right back to the original recipe and haven't touched it since...that's why they have the word Classic on the label. See, sometimes it's a bad idea to screw around with a classic.

Well, at least it's a possibility.

I'm wondering at how expensive it is, however? Is it really necessary to prolong this refurb, when it sounds like things have been already allocated a paid for, seeing they are developed?

The excavator went by oh so fast. The meteorite is still there, illuminated by strobes inside with a fog curtain. Mission One also had the famous moon projection whos face turned from happy to sad as your trajectory missed him - the same effect is now the Supernova, as you crest the lift and dive away from it the projection effect has the shockwaves reaching the ride track - suggesting the blast has knocked you off course. Interesting, the Moon was projected onto the interior of the dome. The supernova is to the left of where it used to be, and now has a proper screen.

Interesting. I never knew that moon frowned but that really was a great way to use the storyline. It is a shame that they got rid of the moon though. It was a great tie-in to Verne's novel and in a slight way, a reference to Horizons. The supernova, I remember reading, was not at all loud like it should have been when Mission 2 opened so I am guessing they worked on that little problem?

Also, one thing that sort of worked both ways for De La Terre Luna was the open walkway which gave you a great view inside the mountain. Unfortunately it caused alot of light leakage and was covered off in the refurb. Is the rest of the queue in the same condition?

We first rode M2 3 months after opening and the Nova worked great. Very loud, neat red lighting effects behind and above the train (to illuminate the heads in front of you) and also heat! If anything it just needed to be a little brighter.

I wouldn`t say it caused light leaks - the corridor was very dark, only lit dimly at foot level. It offered a great view of the UV lit ride too. Shame it went. Now the corridor is enclosed - the windows now have neat M2 pictures over them - though the Electro de Velocitor (the themed end of ride braking zone) is still open to the queue.

Best part of DLP SM is the red vortex tunnel and the music building as you travel through it. When I rode that, I was shocked. For all the people who complain about it replacing mission 1, mission 2 really is stunning.

You won't believe it. But I actually have a SM CONSTRUCTION UPDATE!!!!!

(it is so insignificantly minor, but I'm sure this tiniest of developments will spark endless speculation and discussion!)

Just drove by SM. On the exterior white cone, at approximately the 5 o'clock position (about where you'd draw a straight line between SM and the Contemporary) there is a large, dark stripe extending down the side of the mountain between two of of the ribs (and about half of the width of that area between the ribs) ending at the bottom of the white cone (I can't remember if it extended all the way to the top, but I think it only went up to the circular thingy about 2/3rds up) Sorry no pics!

At first it appeared to be a very dark blue paint stripe. But as I got closer, it looked more like a dirty brown strip of tarp. For a moment I thought it was one of those plastic tubes used in construction to toss debris and trash off a building. But looking closer, I think it was flat against the white angled "roof".

I have absolutely no idea what it was. If I had to guess, I'd say it might have been some type of protective tarp, perhaps to let dirty water flow down the side of the mountain without messing up the white roof. But it didn't appear to have sides. It looked more like a long dark slip-n-slide down the side of the mountain.

This description is from one slow drive-by. Perhaps I didn't see everything.

And with that...I launch another 50-100 posts in this thread!

Glad to hear! It is amazing how the European parks actually use temperature as a part of the experience. All we have is Test Track.

Also, nice to know that the queue is still open to the Electro De Velocitor. Last I heard the music is unfortunately gone though.

:sohappy: I'm guessing that the tarp is for the occasional rain (especially when the roof is off). It might also be for protecting any new paint from getting wet.

Exactly. By trying to make it better, you're making it worse. Why try when the original can still be there? Sure, the original is AWFUL, even IF it was upkept, but trying to do anything good in this country is the mark of death! That's why I spitball all my works with minimal effort, shoddy workmanship, minimal changes, and no intelligent design whatsoever. People eat it up! (Transformers 2...Just sayin'.)

Oh, and don't treat me like I don't know the history of caffeinated soft drinks. Please refrain from the use of condescension towards me, I'm not in the mood this week.

ummm, did you ever experience the Backlot Tour in its full version.

kidding, I know what you meant, but it was torture watching the some of those water scenes while baking in the heat.

I still have a conspiracy that the change of the design was done on purpose, meant to taste bad, therefor in the long run, they switch to this idea of "classic" and make everybody wipe the sweat off their brow and be thankful it is back.

there is something to be said for a company that has never changed their logo in that many years. Ok, I know they have tweaked it here or there, but it seems that Pepsi changes theirs about every 3-4 years to stay fresh visually (pretty much since there product stinks). :D

Am I in chit chat. Oh, hmmm, slow day in the SM thread and updates. To quote Titanic, "alls well, back to the brandy"
