Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Nothing I said implied otherwise. The question I responded to was whether people are aware the movie exists.

It’s a research firm that asks people to list what movies are forthcoming, without prompting them. We don’t typically talk about them because it doesn’t really correlate super well to intent. But it certainly is a good measure of current awareness.
I knew it was coming but didn’t know it was opening Thanksgiving until I saw this thread. I haven’t seen a single ad for it anywhere.

That said I don’t think it’s going to matter in the big picture, it might have an impact on the opening weekend box office but if it’s anywhere near as good as the first I think word of mouth will be all it needs, if word of mouth is good I’ll be shocked if Moana 2 doesn’t surpass IO2 as the new record holder.

Moana is still consistently in the top 10 for streaming, and it’s nearly an decade old, I think the potential audience is huge.

TWDC will do what TWDC will do regardless of who is in office. In my opinion Disney will continue to make the content it wants to make, I think going forward, they will try to reduce budgets so they can still make the content they want to make and be able to at least break even at the box office.

Combine that with a blockbuster here and there and they should to ok.
For the most part I agree, I think they’ve already made minor course corrections this year and have already started releasing “safer” movies at the box office.

Whether that’s good or bad is debatable, good for the bottom line but probably bad from a choice perspective, I expect a lot more safe sequels and less new content that’s not already proven at the box office.

Weekend Box Office -

Not much changes in the last weekend before the start of the Holiday movie blitz the rest of the year.

Wicked and Gladiator 2 start us off next weekend before Moana 2 comes in the weekend after for Thanksgiving.

Well, as 2024 quickly comes to an end, is it safe to say Disney is back this year as the king of the box office? It looks like they will indeed top the rest, landing as the #1 studio again.

Welcome back Disney. I guess all it takes is to avoid originals, and focus on IP … 🫠
Yes, 2023 was more the anomaly than the rule. And despite all the rants from posters here about lack of originals the market has spoken, they like continued use of familiar IP.

This weekends big budget misfire, brought to you by Amazon.

I’m curious to see if this gets a word of mouth boost next week… the critics hate it but it has a 90% audience score on rotten tomatoes.

Sounds like a silly and fun Christmas movie, something critics hate but “real” people tend to love.

Anyone seeing Wicked this week? I’m so stinking excited: going to a Wednesday early access screening, which looks very well sold. Thinking this may be a BIG box office.
We are hosting a soundtrack listening party at my store, with promotional posters to give to all attendees, plus one beanie of some kind via raffle at the end. Folks are encouraged to dress up or at least wear pink or green.

I am interested to see both Wicked and Gladiator, so we’ll see how that plays out. I tend to avoid a theater unless it’s at least half empty.

I wonder if the TV commercials are missing the mark. I was under the impression the older guy playing Santa was the lead, rather than it being “a Dwayne Johnson movie.”

I wasn’t really paying attention, though.
