Imho, the CFTOD's unwillingness to remove her is indicative of the work they personally hope to accomplish, and her role in accomplishing it, rather than a loyalty to the governor. They want her onboard as a "culture war warrior" to help achieve their goals.

I wasn't aware that "culture war" was a topic within the RCID/CFTOD charter? Is there something in the legislation I missed that covers this responsibility?

I think the "one bad book" example is somewhere between a straw man and a red herring. It doesn't really speak to a systematic issue with books children are reading.

Ding ding ding. Certain folks love to cherry-pick examples and use it as a systemic issue when all it is ... is one example without context in a complicated system.

That’s not an excuse for keeping this kind of stuff in schools. It’s just not. For some of these books, the decision should be easy. It’s low hanging fruit that all should be able to agree.

Understandable... however, I'd like proof that any of these books were actually in schools to begin with.

Then why can one not admit both would be good? Recognize that the law has room for adjustment while also being okay with getting these types of books out of school. The default is always “they want to ban books!!” Well, look at the books..it makes sense to not have in schools.

Because as the law is written now, it is NOT good.

I also think we live in an age where children can find whatever they want on the internet on the iPad's they're practically handed at birth. People are not nearly as sheltered as Bridget and her "Mothers on a Crusade".

I don't see her standing outside R rated movies and stopping kids from entering with their parents. It is not illegal to bring your kid to such movies, some theaters may have rules, but they are hardly enforced or they don't exist at all.

I'm one of the most conservative members of this site, and I'll gladly admit she and the others were appointed because of their "culture warrior" bona fides.

The Legislature is currently in session until the first week of March. Let's see if there's a "glitch" bill that amends this law.

They have no intention of doing so. These bills were vaguely written on purpose.

Not officially. If it wasn't "understood" by his appointees, then he would've chosen people that have experience running a special district rather than forging his battles. But then again, if he wasn't a bigot with a penchant for a culture war, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Perhaps an example title of a Disney publication (book, movie, whatever) that would meet the standard of so profane it should be removed from schools?

The whole purpose is to cast a wide net which is seen in the wide variety of books being removed. Point to one thing as a focus and take a dozen others with it.

He is quite good at his job in that sense that he identified someone like Ziegler who, despite her flaws (as evidenced by the scandal), is extremely passionate about the issues which started this whole thread.

That's not what I said. I said that they were picked because he knew that they could carry forward "the mission." That doesn't mean they also can't do the job of running the district.

That's right. I could also list a number of books that have been banned by authors such as Ernest Hemingway and Arthur C Clarke. Did you know 2001: A Space Odyssey is banned in Collier County?

If people were only pushing to ban clearly inappropriate books it might be possible to have a more balanced approach to this, but that is not the reality we live in. There are people who want to remove any book that shows a gay couple because they are afraid it will turn their children gay.
