Your ONE 80's song that defined the decade

Crowded House- "Don't Dream It's Over"
This song always makes me nostalgic for the 80's.

Although, Genesis- "Land of Confusion" is probably more accurate to describe the 80's.

"Superman, where are you now?"

For me it was definately "Don't You Forget About Me" from the Breakfast Club! Best 80's song of all time!

I love "Don't You Forget About Me", but I watched The Breakfast Club for the first time a couple of days ago and I thought it was horrible. It felt like a bad, overacted high school play. Maybe because I'm such a big 80's fan my expectations were too high.

St. Elmo's Fire/MAN IN MOTION

Artist: John Parr
Album: St Elmos Fire

Growin' up
You don't see the writin' on the wall
Passin' by
Movin' straight ahead you knew it all
But maybe sometime if you feel the pain
You'll find you're all alone
Everything has changed

Play the game
You know you can't quit until it's won
Soldier on
Only you can do what must be done
You know in some way
You're a lot like me
You're just a prisoner
And you're tryin' to break free

CHORUS:

I can see a new horizon
Underneath the blazin' sky
I'll be where the eagle's
Flyin' higher and higher
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire

Oooh...

Burnin' up
Don't know just how far that I can go
(Just how far I go)
Soon be home
Only just a few miles down the road
I can make it
I know I can
You broke the boy in me
But you won't break the man

(CHORUS)

I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me
Burnin' in me

Just once in his life
A man has his time
And my time is now
And I'm comin' alive

I can hear the music playin'
I can see the banners fly
Feel like you're back again
And hope ridin' high
Gonna be your man in motion
All I need is a pair of wheels
Take me where my future's lyin'
St. Elmo's Fire

(CHORUS)

I can climb the highest mountain
Cross the wildest sea
I can feel St. Elmo's Fire burnin' in me

Burnin'
Burnin' in me
I can feel it burnin'
Oooh, burnin' inside of me

So...it didn't take much to empower us, but it got us on the dance floor and gave us a fighting chance! This song ROCKED in my corner of the world!

Any song from a John Hughes movie pretty much defined the 80's. Just saw Pretty in Pink recently. Long live Ducky! :sohappy:

I think it might have to be either Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmastime" or USA for Africa's "We Are the World." You know, ridiculously wealthy people thinking they can change the worlds with a superficial gesture? That, to me, sums up the 80s. Wealth and superficial gestures.

Unless...they didn't eradicate starvation in Africa, did they? Otherwise man, that'd be embarrassing... :lookaroun

Has to be--" dont you forget about me"---I can recall being in a club and having just broke up with my boyfriend--(oh god,did i actually have "boyfriends"?)-and had spent days watching john hughes movies and i told some new guy(a film student) and he just turned to me and said "why?",but not in a good way.:ROFLOL: :ROFLOL: Just a random memory that is triggered by "dont you forget about me".

Number 2 would be "Always something there to remind me".

Number 3-early college days-adam ant and "Goody Two Shoes" (if thats the title-) but anyone who was 19 at that time ,you know what song i mean.

From a country music perspective, it was "Lookin' for Love (in all the Wrong Places)" by Johnny Lee, from the movie, "Urban Cowboy."

Or, maybe, "I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool," by Barbara Mandrell.

From a pop perspective, Michael Jackson seemed to own MTV for its first decade.... along with Duran Duran.

"Land of Confusion" by Genesis

When I first heard the song I just thought it had a good rhythm, after I saw the music video I was kinda freaked out but understood more of the meaning behind the lyrics.

Now, if you asked what song by a particular artist (i.e. Madonna) defined them in the 80's...I'd have a much longer list

I'd say Madonna's Material Girl. I had the gloves and I used to dance around the house singing that song while playing my white record. :ROFLOL:
