Would you use a wheelchair?

OK so a month or so ago I broke my foot. I have been fighting and fighting with my body to be able to make it through the park for my one day excursion next Monday. Then yesterday happened. I now also have matching 9" deep chemical burns on my legs. They hurt enough that I cry when I walk to the bathroom and I have yet to stop bleeding. I am prayerful that they will heal enough, by next Monday, to not cause excrutiating pain but I am worried about it. I can not cancel this day when my kids are so excited about it, and it can't be rescheduled due to my daughter's busy schedule. So- with these injuries would you use a wheelchair? Keep in mind that I am heavy so I am sure if I do use the wheelchair I will be one of those peope that gets nasty looks...

You can't really stop people from assuming, so as long as you're comfortable with your decision then what does it matter what others think? I say go for it if you feel the need.

I would. You do whats best for you, if canceling is not an option then use a wheelchair. Others are gonna look and talk regardless, so just do whats best for you.

In the immortal words of the internet... haters gonna hate.

Screw what anybody else thinks. If you need a wheelchair, use a wheelchair. They don't really get "special" treatment anymore anyway, so it's not like its a pass to cut the line like it used to be.

I also say use the wheelchair. You know in your heart that you are using the chair for a legitimate reason. Don't worry about what others are thinking and make the best of your day through your discomfort.

Use the wheelchair. It's a nice thing you're doing for your kids.

And its not like one of those people giving you a nasty look would be a big enough to like complain about people using wheelchairs on a message board or anything... Oh wait...

:p

Only use a wheelchair if you have the personal upper body strength to push it for hours around the parks - or have someone else that does - otherwise, get a ECV (motorized wheelchair).

Yes you should the people that give you dirty looks are morons. My GF doesn't look like she needs it but sometimes she does just ignore the looks people are ignorant.

I agree - use an ECV unless you have someone to push you. Also, I suggest that you practice at a store a few times before using one at WDW.

It's a shame that so many people have made so many nasty comments on the net that someone with a legitimate reason for using a wheelchair or GAC is afraid to use one.

I agree my GF is scared to use one because she doesn't look like she needs one. She has MS and we get dirty looks and have even had some guy tell us that we were disgusting for trying to cheat the system. My foot almost went up his..... this is a family site:lookaroun But people need to relax with this.

Absolutely use a chair. This isn't about anyone but yourself and they won't feel your pain if you choose to walk. Have a wonderful time!

DO NOT get a wheel chair..

Rent a scooter from an outside supply store... TRUST ME.. we did this in March and when my wife "had " to use a wheel chair .. it was all I could do to push her..

no.. get a scooter.. they are about $200 for a week.. and if you are on base they will be "delivered" to your hotel.. meaning that you use one of them that are already at your hotel... and it's a REAL BLESSING..

oh.. but if you get an offbase scooter.. YOU are in charge of running for the fast passes.. because when you put that baby on HIGH.. only Jim Thorpe can catch you... you seldom come close to using half speed..

however, the Disney scooters are slow.. and almost twice the price.. so get an offbase one.. and there is an 800 number to call and rent one..

If you have chemical burns I'm sure by Monday you will still have many bandages and the whole works around your legs so I think more people will be focused on that and not give you the dirty looks you're concerned about.

Mom said exactly what I was thinking. If you have a legitimate need then you shouldn't even have to be asking this question. If people give you a hard time or dirty looks because your burns aren't where they're visible and someone makes a comment, say something. I sure would.

I also agree with the posters who suggested the ECV. They're great and you can have that person who would be pushing you walk in front to clear the way. That's what we did for my aunt in congested areas.

Enjoy your children & your time with you family. Don't sweat the social degenerates.

You do what you have to do and never mind what other folks think or say.
My husband used a wheelchair or a scooter everyday on our last trip in February as he was healing from a broken ankle.

Thank you everyone for your input. I think I will definitely plan on getting something to keep me off my legs. My husband claims that since this is just a one day trip he will be able to push me. I worry about just the walk to get to the wheelchair rental area. We plan on getting there for opening ceremony. Will they let us rent the wheelchair before opening ceremony or will I just have to deal with the ouch factor until the ceremony is over? Anyone know?

Personally I would talk to my doctors and see how they feel. If they give the go ahead then do what you need to do to get through the day...wheelchair, evc, whatever and to hell with what other people think/say/do. But let me tell you, if those burns are as bad as you say they are then you may not want to take the chance of going out to a place like WDW and risking infection. Who is going to change those bandages? Maybe your kids will just have to take one for the team as your health is more important than their going on vacation. Not trying to be mean, just realistic.

((HUGS)) hope you feel better soon.

At the MK, the often open the turn styles 30 minutes prior to the official park opening. You can rent your EVC while you wait for the official rope drop.
