Wookies, & Rebels, & Droids... OH WHY?! The Anti-SWL in Disneyland Thread

Can we blame HP for the emergence of screen based attraction, too? Outside of Star Tours and Soarin', I can't think of many before 2008.

Don't forget Body Wars, any 3D movie in the parks (Captain EO, Magic Journeys, etc.) + integrated use of screens in attractions like If You Had Wings, Rio Del Tiempo, World of Motion, Tron Speed Tunnel, etc. Screens have always been there, it's just that they more recently became the primary show device vs. one of many tools. Pirates in Shanghai does a great job of integrating screens among many other great effects. Screens aren't bad when used properly/sparingly!

One thing screens also allows is the ability to do quick updates. Just look at GotG:MB and the switch to MAD, its just a push of a button to switch every afternoon. You couldn't do that with just physical sets which requires weeks if not months to update. Its allows the attraction to be constantly updated if they wanted. It was what they originally wanted to do for Star Tours, but never implemented.

Now fast forward to the Falcon attraction, they could potentially introduce new updates to keep it fresh. I'm sure its one thing they have already thought of, if not already implementing.

But is it worth the sacrifice of not being as immersive or impressive?

It can be just as immersive and impressive. Again as was mentioned, just look at Shanghai Pirates. Its very immersive and impressive and still has screens. They can update the scenes within those screens anytime they want and still be immersive and impressive.

With the Falcon, we'll just have to wait and see. But I'm willing to bet that it will be just as immersive and impressive even with the use of screens.

Do you know what would make Shanghai's Pirates even more impressive and immersive? It was 100% practical. Are you going to debate that?

What made it impressive and immersive was its size, scope, and use of different technologies and techniques to tell a story. It didn't rely just on one technique to tell the story. It wasn't all screens, it wasn't all physical sets, it wasn't all projection mappings. It was all of it combined to tell a story.

Absolutely would debate that, because the screens create a grand illusion. It's super immersive. Have you ever actually ridden it?
Even if I found myself in the misfortune of being in Shanghai, I would never visit that joke of a park

So you've never ridden it but you're arguing against its use of screens? I have no words, at least none that are appropriate for this site.
Are you going to tell me that poorly done a movie comprised of bad CGI projected on a 30 foot wall is more impressive than large set pieces that completely surround you and animatronic figures that bring the entire place to life? You want to tell me a flat projection of Johnny Depp is better than an audio animatronic figure that you can see and touch?

This myth that screens are impressive is not one I will ever buy into. I can spend $7 on a matinee showing of Justice League if I want to see a sloppy, ugly, incoherent mess on a 30 foot screen, I don't need to fly all the way to Shanghai.

Every single soul I know who has ridden it, including myself, finds the giant screen wall parts incredibly impressive. In certain scenes some couldn't even tell what was virtual and what was physical. Look, I'm not the biggest fan of screens either, but this was done well. You'd have no idea. I'm done with you.

Have a good evening, the garbage men pick up tomorrow morning.

Sorry, there is a difference between an informed opinion and veiled ignorance to staunchly stick to your beliefs. 9/10 I’d prefer a 100% practical ride too, but on this one you are quite wrong.

SDL’s pirates would simply not work as well with what you propose. What it achieves isn’t possible without the perfect blending of massive sets and projected scenes.

We have the comparison in fact, original Pirates is the 100% practical version, and while it’s certainly excellent in every regard, what they achieved in Shanghai is just that much more immersive. Very few attractions have convinced me I am somewhere that is physically boundless compared to the size of the warehouse room we are occupying. Maybe only Flight of Passage and segments of Forbidden Journey.

My issue isn't really the screens, which may be impressive, but the fact that the ride is inspired by the movies. I prefer POTC the way it is in DL without the prominence of Johnny Depp and his wacky shtick and squid head guys. I realize these elements have been integrated into the DL version, but you can ignore them. Florida's version is a lost cause.

Good thing Liberty Square is GREAT!!!!

Yes - Liberty Sq is just great (?!?!?!)....

Here are things l love to do while touring through the area: the keelboat ride, the twin stack riverboat, the tri-corner hat shop, the silversmith, the antique shop, perusing all the cool Americana items sold in the Heritage House and the frequent performances of the fife and drum corps.

Liberty Sq really is fantastic!!!!
