Why Hollywood Studios is being rebuilt

Way on purpose...but goal not achieved. What does a futuristic rock look like anyway? Aren't rocks inherently super old?

Interestingly, the "future" design aesthetic was overtly minimalist brutal in the late 70's early 80's. that have way to the "visual interference" era of the mid 90's, where lots of extraneous dynamic elements were added for unnecessary visual interest. (See the whirlygigs at Epcot as an example.). I think our current view of the future is one of a very green (vegetated) urban environment where pedestrians are king. It has been interesting to watch the evolution.

This is the short sightedness that leads to clones. You want RSR because you know what RSR is. Personally, I want the Imagineers to show us something we haven't seen before. Radiator Springs Racers would be a great addition, but built 5-6 years after the original won't have the same impact.

We also don't know anything about this dark ride concept. Supposedly it would include the indoor portions of RSR and not much else. That sounds like a waste of time to me.

Clones of quality attractions aren't a bad thing. In this case, a clone sounds like the best option.

It would certainly make for an underwhelming finale. Having said that, it's safe to say that a $150 million Cars based attraction (arbitrary number) will probably not stack up that well to Radiator Springs Racers which had a price tag of $340 million. If building RSR didn't affect construction of a Star Wars Land I would be a bigger fan of that. Personally, I think a better move would be to bring in an E-ticket based off another Pixar entity (I could be a hypocrite and say the Ratatouille Ride). The reason they want Cars in place is for the merchandise, but doing a half a$$ed Cars Land could hurt that potential as well.

I want the Star Wars land to be the priority, and given that it seems like it actually exists right now that's a step in the right direction. I suspect that there will probably be clones of whatever is built. However if they're going to do that, it's smarter to build simultaneously.

Let's say the budget is $600 million that would buy you Cars Land as a direct clone from DCA, less Luigi's Flying Tires (the savings could potentially be used for a smaller project like whatever is happening with the Muppets). The other option would be a Star Wars land that already has an E-ticket attraction getting an additional ride, restaurant and whatever else using say 1/2 of that budget with the remaining money being used towards Cars or other Pixar properties.

Personally, I like the second option.

If Disney really wants to go ALL IN on the Star Wars theming here are a few suggestions:

1) Get rid of the entire streets of America area. Nothing goes on there ever and I find people sitting on the stoops of the home facades to relax or eat. That does not inspire you to see more or spend money.
1a) In place of the streets of America they can use that entire area and turn it into a Star Wars themed area. Since you have the Tatooine traders right next to Star Tours then that would be an easy transition into making that into a Tatooine themed area. But what does Tatooine have to offer? Easy...
1b) Mos Eisley Cantina. We know this has already been discussed. It would be a great counter service restaurant and a great place to buy adult beverages. It has to match almost exactly except for maybe another bar that would be a counter service ordering place.
The main bar would serve the adult beverages and of course non-alcholic ones. There are so many great names to play off of with those adult and virgin drinks (Jawa Juice...which is mentioned in Star Wars E1, etc.).
They could also make their own version of Blue Milk which would need to be a great tasting drink that you would just HAVE to try.
I even think Disney may want to get into the Micro Brewery business and make a line of beers call Empire's Finest, or Emperor's Finest, etc. Imagine a beer that you can ONLY get in DHS made by Disney or just FOR Disney with a keepsake glass. It would be one hell of a draw and would keep the adults interested longer.
1c) You can have cast members wander in and out like clients in their Star Wars character costumes. Have a corner booth reserved for Han Solo and Chewbacca. The two may never show up....but Chewie might. You see Han is otherwise "predisposed"....see Jabba's Palace below.
1d) The Cast Member characters could get into a bit of a bar scuffle every so often. Nothing too crazy, but enough to have StormTroopers show up and escort them out. And every once in a while a few droids come in and the bartender could tell them "we don't serve your kind here". That could basically be your floor show. There is so much that could be done.
1e) The Cantina band is a given. Either animatronic or actual cast members playing to a recording. Imagine walking into the bar and hearing the famous Cantina Theme. It would teleport you immediately into the world of Star Wars.

2) While you are re-theming Streets of America...you could set up traders and vendors like on Tatooine selling different foods, very unique looking and themed foods for this otherworldly place. Souvenirs could be sold at these stands, stray robots putting on shows. A build your droid area, etc.

3) Down the road.....off in the distance...some great force perspective....Jabba's Palace. That is your new restaurant. Table Dining and an excellent experience. Similar to Mos Eisley Cantina, but very different.
3a) First you can have a huge animatronic Jabba and Salacious Crumb on his throne. Every once in a while Jabba can laugh. He can interact with the cast members and suddenly Jabba will bellow something and ALL of the staff will stop and listen to him. Just a great way for the figure to interact with the environment. Of course he has to speak in Huttese. No English.
3b) On the far wall, eerily lit.....Han Solo in carbonite. That is why he never arrives at his booth at the Cantina. One bounty hunter on guard at all times. Boba Fett would be a GREAT draw here for a photo spot. The CM photographer would also be in character as one of Jabba's minions.
3c) The Max Rebo band playing great music with Sy Snoodles as animatronics throughout the meal.
3d) Dancers in the middle of the floor...not as scantily clad as the movies of course, but that is your floor show...until....
3e) Different bounty hunters show up with characters they caught to present to Jabba. It would be really fun if they would grab a person from their table and take them to Jabba to present them as tribute. That person would be lead off and be missing for a bit....then taken in back and given something special including pictures of themselves being presented to Jabba. Personally.....I LOVE the idea of a picture of them in front of a giant Rancor and put in the Rancor's hand. That picture would be priceless. You could even escort out the entire family or couple or whoever was at the table. This should be totally random and for adult couples as well as couples with kids. Kids always get picked for this stuff and the adults would love it just as much, if not more.
3f) It would be great if, every so often, Jabba would bark something and then hit a button and one of the dancers would fall through the floor and you would hear the Rancor roar from below.
Consider something like this similar to the meteor shower in T-Rex. Every so often this will happen so you will always get to see it during your meal.

Jabba's Palace would be SPECTACULAR.

more to come......

Okay, since when is DC family friendly?

I want to chime in here. A DC vacation, in terms of "family friendliness" is top notch. Most attractions you would want to see are free, which can be very friendly to a family on a tight budget. The National Mall is one of the most beautiful sights that most Americans can ever see - from the Capital down to the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, with Jefferson, Roosevelt tucked away, and the rest. Free tours of the Pentagon, Capital, White House, Senate and House buildings, etc. At least, as long as sequestration doesn't keep things like that closed. The city is quite walkable. You can find great meals to fit whatever budget you like.

Being totally honest, as a DC resident, I don't want any more tourists in this city. It is hard enough to navigate during rush hour. But, the city is family friendly, and is basically designed to be one large living attraction that invites all citizens of the world to come and visit.

Actually, I just got a better idea:
ALL WDW FANS, COME TO DC FOR A VACATION INSTEAD OF GOING TO ORLANDO...
so I can walk onto Soarin' and Test Track without needing a fast pass...

Disney going ALL IN on Star Wars themed area..... (part 2)

Now I know most of this is only wishful thinking, but if Disney wanted to shell out the bucks they would make it back in spades. This new area would be IDEAL all year round and LANDMARK during Star Wars Weekends.

As you transition out of Tatooine...the sandy colored concrete becomes a dark gray concrete...almost metallic in sheen......Tatooine fades behind you and the music changes to either more ominous or regimental....and leads you into....

1) The Death Star
Yes...like the Epcot "Spaceship Earth" it is time for Disney to actually make (a scaled down version of) The Death Star.

The inside of the Death Star could be a dark ride. A ride that takes you through the Star Wars movies (at least the original trilogy) and puts you into the story. Something innovative and interesting. And at some point during the dark ride...instead of always being slow and plodding like Spaceship Earth...with some great 360 video effects.....an indoor raid on the Death Star....a trip through an asteroid field....or through the forest of Endor. The entire story could be told. HOWEVER...... if you wanted.....Imagine Star Wars being told in this dark ride From the EMPIRE'S point of View. Interesting to say the least.

1a) Around the base of the Death Star, outside...more shops and some counter service dining areas. A SITH Training academy could be there to counter the Jedi Training Academy. (more on that later).

2) This would be tricky, but would be AWESOME.......some forced perspective assistance.....like the Be Our Guest restaurant..... there could be a separate entrance under the Death Star....similarly designed like the Innovations entrance under Spaceship Earth. The interior looks just like you are entering an Imperial shuttle bay...metal plated floors....beams...storm troopers...Imperial Officers, etc. You pass through control rooms, enter a throughway that looks like a shuttle....and through the window a field of stars flies by as you wait....

2a) The field of stars slowly reveals an Imperial Star Destroyer in the distance as you approach and dock (basically just a glamorized hallway...like the transition on Haunted Mansion). Through some Disney trickery....you are lead to believe you have been flown to an imperial Starship. When you walk out of the shuttle (hallway) you enter another lobby and are greeted by an Imperial Officer/Host who is flanked by Red Robed Imperial Guards...

2b) You walk in to the Imperial Restaurant. The Restaurant looks just like the Emperor's throne room from Return of the Jedi.
Including a HUGE circular picture/panoramic picture window out of which you can see a field of stars. Beyond the field of stars. Through it you can see the Death Star (completed or not completed is an artistic choice)....completed would be better since they already have a completed one on the ground at DHS.
And every so often, around the Death Star, you see the Empire fighting the Rebels. Projections of Tie Fighters chasing X-Wings zip by and flashes explode outside. Green laser blasts fire out every so often as well from the ship on which you sit.

2c) The Imperial Restaurant will be table service of course. Higher end meals, adult beverages, etc. The servers will be dressed as Imperial Officers.

2d) The Emperor's throne will be up on the platform facing the window, back to the diners....and every so often....the Emperor's eerie music will get louder....and the chair will turn around. Either you will have an animatronic Emperor address the crowd, or a CM who magically slips in and out of the chair when it is turned around. I prefer an animatronic so you think the Emperor is there the entire time. Can't you hear his cackling laugh when he talks about the fate of the rebel fleet or picks out a table, or guest and ...through interactive programming....insults them calling their skills feeble, etc....especially those kids in the Jedi outfits.

2e) Then..maybe at another time...very similar to Be Our Guest Restaurant....the Imperial March begins...and in comes Darth Vader. Right down the center aisle to meet the Emperor. He may be able to exchange a few lines with the Emperor, or just address the crowd. Perhaps he goes to your table and an imperial Photo Officer can take your picture with him....OR....... you can go take a picture with him in a back room on your way out like you can with Beast. In that room....Darth Vaders meditation chamber could be off in the corner. This could be his private chamber and Stormtroopers guard the entrance and escort you out.

That alone would be a Killer. There is SO Much to offer if they did that.

more to come....

Disney going ALL IN on Star Wars themed area..... (part 3)

This will be my last entry...and very short. I could think of more, but honestly I don't have time to keep writing all night. So I will knock out this last idea.

Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular is very Aztec themed with jungles and such......

Closer to Indiana Jones....take the Jedi Training Academy area...that stage.....and shape it into a Massassi temple so it blends in with the Indiana Jones area seamlessly tying two together.

In there you can have your Jedi Academy training. You can also have a Build you Own lightsaber area...for Adults AND kids. Because dammit I want to build my own lightsaber.

The temple would be a nice bridge between Star Tours and the Endor forest frontage and the Azetc/jungle style of Indiana Jones. It would just make it look better...and dammit.....Park an X-Wing in front of the Temple Please. We need to be able to sit in one and/or take a picture in front of one.

That's about it. I hope you like the ideas. I'm sure Disney has thought of them but I'll still write to them and let them know. We would ALL LOVE IT....and it would put Harry Potter to shame.

Why?
a) Because it's Star Wars.
b) Because they are still making Star Wars movies and Harry Potter is done.
c) Because it's Star Wars.

May the Force..... oh hell you know.

I think the cars dark ride has a lot of potential. Could be one of the better dark rides Disney has ever done IMO
I agree (and not many people too). While the full RSR would be better, a complete indoor attraction using great sets and animatronics like in RSR with possibly some more show scenes and a change in story can be a great family dark ride.

I concur. Regarding the Pixar portion, I have to wonder how much a Monsters Inc. door coaster and the Incredibles attraction originally planned for DCA would cost? I may be way off the mark, but it seems that Disney could get two major rides and potentially a decent C-ticket dark ride (possibly something like Peter Pan with an Up theme) for the costs of RSR. As mentioned before, a portion of Streets of America could be repurposed for Monsters Inc. and possibly Incredibles as well.

Further, if TDO is so hungry for a Cars-based attraction, there's always the idea that has been kicked around here before - building a Radiator Springs version of Autotopia in the back of the park. Now, the first time I read such a suggestion, I was completely opposed to the idea. However, as long as it has some decent theming and is coupled with the major attractions listed above, it could help to make for a robust Pixar Place. The added bonus could be the potential replacement of Autotopia in Tomorrowland with something exciting in preparation for the 50th anniversary.

People continue to hold out hope for an expo in Orlando as though continually posting the same thing over and over will somehow get a D23 CM monitoring these boards to say, "Oh yeah, why didnt we think of that!". Why are people so afraid of visiting another resort?

I think it's just that many people here have never been to Anaheim, much less a D23 Expo, and they don't understand the scale and scope of D23 Expo in the largest convention center on the West Coast (bigger than LA, San Diego, San Fran, Portland or Seattle's convention centers) directly across the street from the Disneyland Resort.

And they also don't understand how little convention space there really is in WDW, even when you piece it all together across far-flung properties around WDW. There's much less square footage in WDW compared to what they have in Anaheim. And for 2013 the Expo is expanding again into Exhibit Hall D, making it the largest Expo ever.

Here's the square footage totals of what's available in Anaheim, what they'll actually use for D23 Expo in August, and what's available in WDW:

D23 Expo 2013
Including the D23 3D Theater, the D28 Theater, 10,000 seat Anaheim Arena for keynote presentations, 600,000 sqf of exhibit halls for pavilions and booths, and 70,000 sqf for ticketing lobby and reception area
D23 Expo 2013 Square Footage Used: 780,000 Square Feet
Anaheim Convention Center Square Footage Available: 1.1 Million Square Feet

WDW Convention Facilities Square Footage
Including 220,000 sqf @ Coronado Springs, 115,000 sqf @ Contemporary, 70,000 sqf @ Yacht and Beach Club, 40,000 sqf at Grand Floridian, and 20,000 sqf at Boardwalk
WDW Convention Facilities Square Footage Available: 465,000 Square Feet

And then right across the street from the Anaheim Convention Center there's this little thing called The Disneyland Resort, featuring Cars Land and the missing seven minutes from Pirates of the Caribbean. And it's all just down the freeway from Los Angeles and corporate headquarters in Burbank. It makes the logistics and planning and costs associated with the Expo infinitely easier and cheaper and more efficient than trying to stage a D23 Expo in a scaled down and chopped up format at the much smaller WDW venues.

Plus there's the difference in climate in August in Orlando compared to Anaheim. I don't think Bob Iger or John Lassetter wants to leave SoCal in August, so it's a non-starter.

In short, D23 Expo in its current large format will never be able to transfer to Walt Disney World. Just not gonna happen. Ever.
