Why am I a target?

I'm really sorry, but can someone explain these rectangular things to me? I know they are located by our post count, but how do you get them? And how do you give them to others? I'm sorry if I'm being a little blonde here, or if it's something really obvious.
Thanks

They are reputation points.

Green points are "positive" and red points are "negative"

To give them...click on the "scales" above the post to give that post a reputation point...or take one away.

To see your reputation points, click on your User CP and it'll list the last 5 or 6 and have comments if any were written by the "giver" of the points.

SQUARE
Happy now? Lol. Thanks to everyone who gave me green squares (although they are more rectangular than square . . .), I have left everyone who posted on this thread (other than me ofcourse) green squares so being so kind and not calling me a whiny baby as I thought somebody might do (not that I wanted that!). FREE GREEN SQUARES FOR ALL!!! We should start Squarefest! I can see it now . . ."WAVE YOUR SQUARE IN THE AIR IF YOU JUST DON'T CARE!"
Maybe not. Thanks again.

Not a whiney baby, just an inquisitive poster with a question - no problem - I like giving positive points out - feels like I'm spreading PixieDust!

yen...yensid...YENSID...Yensidt...(how does one pronounce a "dt" combo?)...some important LAW maybe? The Yensidt Law?
Well, to me it looks like a Welsh name. Do we have any Welsh speakers on the board who can fathom this one out? I know that language has some weird letter combinations and strange sounds.

Yensid - just to back up what the others have said, don't fret about the ratings.

Question:

What is this reputation box thing, how do I check it, and should I even care how I am rated?
1) It is something that people click and say whether your posts are worthwhile or not.
2) Click User CP at the top of the page of any thread
3) Not at all :animwink: .

I think a lot of people are learning about this for the first time...new one on me for sure, then again I never professed to be savy to all the nuances. :lookaroun

Wow, I confess, I had no idea. I have clicked on my scale and see that I have 10 points. Does that mean there are no comments with them? How do I know if I get negative ones? I don't see anything about reputation on the User CP page. Am I missing something? Can other people see your points?

Thanks for the info!

Well, I just checked out my "points" and I must say that I was surprised, (not really), to see some negative feedback, shall we say? It's cool though. People are going to interpret comments differently than you intended sometimes. I think I often get mis-quoted, or am misunderstood because people these days tend to be so thin-skinned. I'm always amused at how some people will make derogatory comments toward someone, and if you retaliate in any way, then you're labeled as being insulting, rude, or mean. I try my best not to ever attack people on a personal level out here, as I don't think that's the intention of these boards. But it seems like sometimes things can get personal on here when people get to disagreeing on any given subject. I know that we all can get pretty passionate about Disney, but I think more civility is in order.

By the way, I've got 29 point. Don't know where that puts me and don't even know if I care.

On User CP page, scroll down under "Subscribed threads". There will be the threads in which you were given/taken rep points from. They will have a green or red box beside each one and a comment if the person left one. Hope this helps.

Ugh, don't pay attention to that stuff at all.

I got a "reputation point" taken away yesterday because some know-it-all hall monitor posted something really ridiculous, and I responded - they said "so and so" was just trying to help. It's all about who's friends with whatever moderator decided to "rate" you - obviously I ticked someone off.

Hi that was me

I don't even know the person you posted to, but I thought long and hard about whether or not to add to your reputation. And I thought well you simply could have been nicer about it. You are free to tell someone they are wrong, but you don't need to be mean, demeaning, belittling, or jerky about it. Obviously though you just took that as someone being a know it all rather than someone trying to show you that there are much better ways to tell someone they are wrong or you don't agree with them.

Well, somebody didn't like something I said in this thread

(Well, they were neutral about it...because I got a gray box...not red...not green)

gray means that person has not been here long enough or does not have enough good points to really make a difference to your rep.
That makes sense, because my only "negative" point was given by someone new who couldn't take constructive criticism (given politely) and proceeded to tell me off. Oh well, a lot of sweethearts around here have more than made up for that .

Interesting

Looking through my history, I found it very funny that I got both red and green for the same post.

Basically if you enter into a contested discussion, correct someone or use inflammatory or judgemental wording you are on thin ice. If the rating is important to you just stay with favorite character, favorite ride and restaurant and you'll be golden.

THANK YOU ! I THANK EVERYONE! I was suprised, this morning I had 6 points, then I had none, and right now I have 34! I was suprised, I wasn't expecting to recieve points or anything, I just wanted to know what the heck was up with the system! I finally learned how to give points, which I will only give good ones. I have tried to get everyone who posted on the thread once, but it said I gave too many points in the last 24 hours :hammer: lol. Thanks for being so considerate in this thread. This is definately one of the nicest collection of posts, also known as "Threads", that I have ever read. I really mean it when I say thanks.
