Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

I don't smoke anymore, it's been years. But, I still remember how consuming that addiction can be. I know for a fact that if they didn't have a smoking area in WDW, I never would have gone to WDW. I know that doesn't bother anyone, but, I still feel for those that still have that habit. I really hope that Disney advertises that before they get people there that are not only trying to overcome the heat, but, also the strength of that empty gut feeling that comes with having to abstain both voluntarily and especially non-voluntarily. If you think you have seen angry people before, just wait. If the CM's don't step up and enforce it smoking will no longer be contained in specific areas, it will be back to happening everywhere. That should be a bigger concern for those that feel that they need to avoid it. I will be amazed if there are no big problems resulting from it. I might be wrong. I hope I am wrong, but, I remember how militant I was when I was a smoker and it is kind of a standard attitude that comes with the social rejection. If one thinks that they have witnessed angry, frustrated parents taking out their anger on the kids, just wait. I'm not saying that behavior is the way people should be, but, I do know the aching need to have that smoke and how badly it affects the smoker and the people around them. It isn't pretty.
Well, I have to say, I'm glad they are getting rid of the smoking, but I do wish they would have given it a bit more time. This doesn't allow people to prepare themselves. Over here, most people are used to having to leave a place to have a smoke....there are always rule breakers, but in general, most people are considerate enough of non-smokers that they voluntarily take it somewhere else. But if you don't know it's a rule, it will impact people's schedules, who will now have to plan in smoking breaks around fast passes, ADRs, etc...

My mother smoked and she was that militant kind you spoke of. She refused to visit friends who didn't allow smoking in their homes. She said if they were her friends, they had to accept that she smoked. She refused to believe that the 2nd hand smoke had any effect on people around her, and she once yelled at me for being rude because she blew smoke right in my face and I waved it away with my hand...and -I- was the one being rude. I would get a cold and it would last for weeks, the doctor said it was probably because I was breathing in smoke all the time. Mom said it was a bunch of hooey.

I don't think we'd have ever visited Disney if this was the rule back then. But I am glad they are doing it, because it IS a health risk to other people, not just themselves. It's not just about it smelling bad...it's about the health of others. Some people have severe respiratory reactions to smoke. It's better to ask the smokers to go somewhere else than to have people not being able to breathe because someone is smoking. I have compassion for people caught in the addiction....it's sad. but, I don't think that's a valid excuse to be putting everyone else at risk, too. This ban forces them to be considerate of non-smokers and be responsible for their own habits. But I think they should have done it slowly...either in stages, or giving a year's notice or something. Give people a chance to try to quit first, or make time for their smoke breaks in their schedules, etc.

But the fact is that there were smoking areas in each park. Now those you are addicted have to totally leave the parks, then go through security again before re-entering. All this will do will encourage people to sneak a smoke everywhere., or even worse, hold off til their families, and all those around them suffer the wrath of withdrawal.

Absolutely! I don't smoke, but know a number of people who do. It's dumb for WDW to willy nilly just eliminate the smoking areas. Nicotine is a drug. What smoker is going to last all day in the MK for example, without a puff?!

Good lord, can't they just have 2 locations (one somewhere near the front of the park, and one somewhere at the rear. And instead of it being an outdoor location, have it in a discreet (small) building where the smokers could all smoke--kinda like when the airlines had smoking rooms in the terminals, near the gates -- in glass enclosed rooms.

Really, this is a poorly thought-out policy, and it will add to the tension of families who have 1 or more smokers in the group.
Seriously think this is Disney trying to get a leg up on the impending legalization of pot but either way good for them

Well, who really knows what brought this new policy about at WDW. (Perhaps your hunch might be part of a broader reason.) Anyway, I can't read any more of the thread about it--it's just too intense at this point.

I love red maple trees--they're spectacular. Yes, get one of those, or two or three of those!

By the way, I'm off from work today. It's fun to chat in the middle of a regular work afternoon!
I hope you did something more fun than reading posts here on your day off!

Anyway, I wish we had room for more than one tree, but we really don't.

I slept until 5:15 this morning!! Love sleeping in for a change.

Did some financial stuff for a few hours. Went to the post office. Then, I did grocery shopping on a Friday morning :inlove: with no crowds.

But then I lost my mind, and cleaned out a drawer! :jawdrop:

Good thing we always go out to dinner on Friday night--maybe I'll recoup a little of my sanity? :p
