Walter is the most Unique dog I've ever had. He behaves as if every human on earth is meant for him. There have been a handful of men, some with dogs other not that I've passed on the Riverwalk that I have to hold on tight because he goes guard dog ballistic. It is odd 'cause he favors men so I trust his judgement.
Walt is known in our town by just about everyone, many come out of their homes as we go on our twice a day 2.5 mile walks. We had many people give him Halloween trick or treats. Happy Pup. But still he is a guys guy mostly. Happiest with my DS and the man across the road that has treats for him, lets him out, walks him when we are gone, takes him home with him too. He snuggles with my DD but I am his Alpha. I trained him, fed him, bathe him. When he is a mule he ignores everyone elses instructions or commands. But if I just say, come here, he does so. Drives my DH nuts. But he picked my DS as his people, strange because for the most part DS didn't live here most of the time we have had him.
Ha ha . . . Walter is a local celebrity! Dogs can be people magnets; it's funny when we're out walking, and people know my dog's name, but haven't a clue what mine is. The interesting thing about dogs is that they bond with whomever they trust, and immediately let you know people they don't like.
Sometimes, I think they're cuing off some sort of vibe that we, ourselves, send out. In other words, I wonder if, at times, he's reacting to my gut impression about a stranger in our midst, that I might feel uncomfortable around. (He's not shy about growling at certain strangers when he feels like it.) Dogs can be very perceptive and "read" their owners, better than we can, ourselves.
