This is now the second family function on Hubby's side that I have weaseled out of this summer.
Pretty soon they'll be talking about me.

Oh wait ... they already do.

Here's my take on that - as long as they're talking about me, they're not talking about someone who might actually give a carp.
My dad always skips my mom's family functions. There are very few of my mom's relatives that he can tolerate. The two aunts, her father (amazingly enough) and about three of her cousins are basically it. They also are very much into alcohol (I did get it honestly) and some of them have a tendancy to overindulge which I know makes him uncomfortable. Basically, they don't expect him to show, and the relatives who he cares about don't judge, and he doesn't give a darn about what the others think.

Wish I were so lucky. Unfortunately, I can't get away with not going.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.

Yep. Too much drinking. Too much gossip. Too much food. Too much judgement.

Hubby's answer? Same as always - boot 'em both out!
Starting Wednesday, Hubby is done work. Probably until the new year.
Then, oh boy, things are gonna change!
I have been Pentecostal my whole life. My kids were raised in the church. They attended Catholic school, which is a separate fully funded system, here in Ontario.
They were raised properly. They have a strong foundation. I just have to trust Proverbs 22:6 -
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Well I genuinely hope for your sake and those young men that he has the ability to change things. He clearly has stated what needs to be done in his mind from what you have shared and maybe passing the gauntlet off to the DH he will be able to establish some boundaries or end it with consequences.

I like your boys was educated in Catholic Schools. One of the things that was pounded into our heads was
Honourthyfather and thymother by my parents. The nuns taught respect by bopping us upside the head with a pointer stick.

My kids on the other hand were raised initially to be practicing Catholics but given the Priest scandals in the US and Canada I had a difficult time with all that and the hypocrisy. We are a family of strong faith but we do not sit in church often. They were not raised up Church Proper, I never recited bible verses to them, nor did they have a strong Catholic foundation past their First Communions. I think what it came down to is my kids have a healthy respect for my DH and me. They we raised with that Honor and Respect rammed down their throats and I didn't tolerate anything less, ever. There are too many Christians in Prison including 2 priests from our tiny parish, wasn't going to follow their lead in child rearing. I instead trusted God gave me the wisdom to raise my children to be proper adults.

Food's always good with my family. My one aunt makes the best lasagna and because she knows I love it, she sends me home with a pan. Food's good. It's the drinking. And the smoking.

My dad's side of the family only drinks in small amounts, and the rule is no smoking at family events. My mom's side takes drinking very seriously. And they are inconsiderate when it comes to smoking. My late grandmother was also an asthmatic and allergic to cigarette smoke. She would break into hives just being around it. The problem was that she wasn't nice to my relatives about it, so they didn't ever take the request ro move away from her seriously. Now when I nicely ask them to please move away from me when they are smoking or to not light up when they are sitting next to me, they ignore me. Then I start wheezing. So we only go to one event with the entire family per year, and usually my cousin and I take plates of food and go where no one is smoking. Only good part of those events are that I get to hang out with my favorite cousin.

Robert Campbell is a distant relative on DWifey's fathers side of the family that died fighting at the Alamo.

No pictures are allowed inside the Alamo sanctuary. It is a shrine.
Also, all buildings in downtown SA are designed so that they never cast a shadow on the sanctuary.

So Pretty!

I'm not big on family events either. They likely never end well one way or another.
