I like the AKL too. (Haven't stayed, only visited for dinner.) My favorite memory is sitting on one of the upper porch areas in a rocking chair. It was so tranquil I could have taken a nap.

I've stayed at AKL a few times through the years (but too expensive for me now). I always requested Arusha Savannah for the most panoramic view (incidentally, they now charge extra for Arusha—they never did in the past . . . :( ). Anyway, the AKL lobby was gorgeous and extremely well-themed. The swimming pool in the back was really fun, and I think it might have been the first zero-entry pool on WDW property. (They also had lockers and showers for people (who had already checked out of the hotel) but who wanted to get in a final swim on their departure day.) The Mara had some nice variety for their quick-service restaurant.

It's so pleasant to sit out on the balcony in the morning and watch the animals wake up (yup, I'm usually up before any of the critters!). I'd also see the workers driving small pickups with skinny tree branches and lots of greenery. They'd "bait" trees closer to the guest view areas, by placing the branches on top of actual tree branches on the savannah, to entice the giraffes to go eat there (which was fun for guests to view, gave extra time for people taking pictures, etc.).

I remember one, funny giraffe that waited for the workers to get off the truck, lower the back hatch, and then take some branches over to the trees. While the men were doing this, the giraffe snuck over to the back of the (hatch down) truck, and just start helping himself to the branches hanging off the back! HA! Why wait for them to put the branches in trees, when it was easier to just have breakfast off the back of a pickup! :hilarious:

Well, we just decided to take us a spur-of-the-moment day trip down to San Antonio tomorrow.
We'll do the Alamo in the mornin', then the Institute of Texan Cultures. The rest of the day will be spent mostly along the River Walk, with dinner on the River Walk tomorrow night before we head home. :)

Hey, it's the holiday weekend and you should be doing something different and fun! I approve. :) Today, hubby and I are driving up to southern Maine to take in some nice scenery, and definitely partake in a delicious lobster meal, at one of the many great seafood restaurants right along the ocean. :hungry:

These little green lights on our avatars are new. Know who is still awake or who fell asleep with their laptop open.

What green light? Do they just do that at night? I'm always on here early in the a.m. and have never seen any green lights.

Edit: I just now saw a green "corner" on the upper left-hand side of Peter's avatar on his thread (California trip). He's been up all night and has posted a few trip updates, so I guess the green light thingie is working, even in the early a.m.

We have seen in our backyard squirrels, chipmunks, snakes, fox, groundhogs, birds (including hawks), barn cats, deer, rabbits, bats, mice, and many, many bugs. Chipmunks and deer have been the worse for us. Chipmunks have caused all kinds of damage, including to my car. Deer are the next worse. Not usually when they are in the backyard, unless they are eating the plants, but they are not smart enough to get out of the road. My bff actually had a deer hit her car. She was sitting still at a red light and the deer rammed into her car. I've nearly hit them on several occasions. Thankfully, the squirrels haven't caused much damage to us, but we know they cause damage to other people's homes, so I can understand why some may refer to them as rats with bushy tails. Kind of the way I feel about chipmunks.

When my son was in youth soccer (more than a decade ago) his coach was killed when he hit a deer that jumped out in front of his car on a mountain road in NC. :(

I don't eat Bambi, Kaa, Thumper, Chip and Dale, nor Mickey.

I have tried Bambi....too gamey tasting. I'll stick with Clarabelle, Porky and Nemo.
