I've been going through old papers, and came across an article from 1962 talking about Cleveland's SOS program. Sabin Oral Sunday - thousands lined up to receive polio vaccine - one dose per month X3 doses given every Sunday May - August. $&1/2 million doses were given - at ballparks, schools, fire stations, even camps. 90% of the residents received vaccinations. It was so effective because it could be given orally (rather than by injection) and also promoted intestinal immunity, preventing spreading the virus via waste matter.

I had every type of polio virus there was - shots, by "gun" (pneumatic high pressure injection) and sugar cube. It's hard to describe the fear this virus instilled - a HS friend's mother literally dropped while hanging clothes in the backyard, and was paralyzed for the rest of her life. She was on a chest compression respirator for the rest of her life - need to go back into the iron lung from time to time. She died in 1980. I knew neighbors/classmates who used leg braces and crutches.
Polio was a biggy when I was a kid. I remember going to an old Firehouse to get my first vaccination. Strictly with a needle, not something a kid wants to face. But, the alternative was far more scary. Most of the rest of my vaccinations were before my memory of them. Until I went into the service. Then I remember the pneumatic system was in place. You would walk around a corner and "bam" one in each arm. Go around another corner and the got you again. But, I have been pretty health all my life, so, I guess on some level it was all worth it.

I don't ever remember a sugar cube. I do seem to remember a liquid that you swallowed, but, I don't remember what it was for.

what day because labor day is usually the first Monday of September
September 4, 2001. It was a Tuesday, also my first day of school. My mom was scheduled to be induced two days later, but when she went in for her check up, they found that her blood pressure had spiked. They got him out by C-section that day.

And then a week later 9-11 happened...

This is the first thing that crossed my mind when I read that date. :(
Yeah, it's a little weird to think about now. I hardly remember anything about 9-11 since I was only six at the time. My mom was so drugged out that she doesn't even remember it (she had a rough time with my brother). She said it was like a dream. So she wasn't in a position to explain it to me, my dad of course did not explain it, and basically all I remember is that I got out of school early that day. Took years before I realized the magnitude of what had happened.

Have you ever gone and read the "live" chit chat from 9-11 as it unfolded on this site?

If not, you should take the time one day.

You know what's funny?

Yeah. I was a senior in high school when it happened (there, now everyone knows my age). I remember every detail and it was definitely a horrible day...I have thought a couple times about how I am going to explain 9/11 to my 16 month old when she gets older.

She will learn about it in history class and will be as disassociated with it as you were learning about Vietnam and the World Wars.

It hurts me to the core to discuss the events with my kids. The discuss it in school on a very general level. I hate seeing them learn that the world is not all sunshine, puppies and rainbows like when they were little.

I wasnt reading this forum at the time, but i was in my world history class in high school when the second tower fell.

Ill never forget, right before that class and before i knew what was going on, sitting in my english class, day dreaming out the window, and wondering why the skies were so clear of planes.

Im about 35 minutes from pittsburgh international airport...which is mere minutes by air...and 60 minutes from somerset, where the one plane crashed. A handful more minutes and it could have hit my city.

I went home after my world history class that day. I learned enough.

She will learn an overview in history class. She will truly learn it from me.

I never understood how my mother remembered every detail of where she was and what she was doing when JFK was shot - but I can remember every detail of 9-11. My father's office was in the 7 building. They evacuated after the second tower was hit. The building fell later that day. Basically everyone in the Tri-State area either knows someone, or knows someone that knows someone that was lost that day. It doesn't go further than that.

I wasn't reading this forum daily either back then, but I have gone back and read that day's posts....It gets brought back up every Sept.11th.

You were physically a lot closer to the events of that day...
